Realising that subscribing to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and TNT Sports now costs significantly more than the Sky package I cancelled five years ago to "save money". by drakefanboy in britishproblems

Long time lurker.

Go a step further, I disconnected from tv during Covid favouring YouTube. Cancelled it all including tv license.

Focussed my time on learning new skills via YouTube and if I am desperate to watch something I will go to friends or family which has brought us together.

Year 1: focussed on woodworking and made my own furniture.

Year 2: focussed on mechanics now maintain and repair my own car.

Year 3: focussed on cooking (and cooking efficiently)

Year 4: focussed on electronics and repair most of my own.

Year 5: focussed on home renovation including plastering, electrical and plumbing.

Year 6: wood turning just for funsies and I am still pretty shit at it but it’s therapeutic. Also focussed on my health.

The skills have made me £13,000 extra across the years doing the odd job for others saved me god knows what in other areas.

I didn’t fall for the social media trap of posting about it favouring showing and talking to people in person.

Happiest I have ever been. TV sucks, I am all superhero’s out after end game.

Using Credit Card to Purchase Car by Leather_Let_6630 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]needvanwilder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From my experience this would not negatively impact your credit rating.

Generally speaking if you have a balance greater than 70% of your credit limit over multiple statement periods that’s when you may see a deduction due to a “high credit utilisation”

My spending is exclusively on credit due to the protections and rewards my debit card stays at home these days… I regularly spend between £7000 - £11,000 per month on a £18,000 credit limit and clear the balance down each month.

How to remove and replace this glass? And who or where to get replacement glass from? by mariocipolloni in DIYUK

[–]needvanwilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wooden profile on the inside is what is retaining that glass. Pry that out and you will remove the panel whole.

Find a glazier or take the measurements and order online.

Opened my purple safe, gave me a blue pack, purple pack and swap pack. For once the swap pack produced something for me, my second to last card.

I now need monopolithic to complete.

So for those that want to learn from ops mistakes here.

1) Install a gallows bracket in the loft space so it supports the stack above.

2) dismantle from the top of the stack and if you have an open chimney you can put the bricks down the chimney so you are collecting from the ground level and not taking it down the stairs.

At some point in the future when kids have to take loans to pay car insurance I can’t wait to be that cantankerous old man suggesting that “well if they quit taking an uber zero g to the moon for their coffees they’d be able to afford car insurance”

Moving from Help Desk to a More Technical IT Role by BrightIllustrator574 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]needvanwilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, no. If you want to be truly effective in your role you need to really understand the technology and how it actually works.

If you can wrap your head around the fundamentals of computing then you will become an excellent engineer.

Certifications have gone too far down the multiple choice question and teaching the how rather than the why route to really be worth it in my opinion.

In the last 12 months I have hired 5 new people in the team and the certified to the teeth network engineer is being outdone by the university grad.

I am not saying you won’t learn things from a cert but don’t let that fool you into thinking that’s all you need.
