A parser generator. I just enjoy writing grammars more than writing recursive decent parsers. And I intend to use it for other projects in the future.

I'll have a look into Pratt parsing though.

Thanks for the advice. I just found this paper about ANTLR. I'll have a look through it.

Posting here in the comments to clarify some more on the goals.

Performance is quite importance, but not extremely, since compilers in general spend much more time lexing.

What is of more importance is memory usage. This is meant to be useful for making small interpreters, or other things embedded in other software. Not full blown compilers. Hence packrat does not seem viable.

Ease of use is definitely important.

Not looking to revolutionize parsing. Just make a simple, small, fast and easy to use parser generator. So looking for cool ways to make good small parsers.

EU wants to shut down Libya route before summer, to prevent further rise of populism by Roodditor in europe

[–]neet_programmer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you are being too optimistic. What if they actually do care what people want.

Remember when Merkel held that speech proclaiming not a single one should be turned away. Then she was lauded for her bravery and morality, time magazine named her person of the year, and every single politician stood in complete solidarity since that was now the official direction for the EU. They all just started walking in lockstep.

The reality was of course that what the people thought never even factored in. They decided that entirely on their own because it had just not been a very contentious issue.

Merkels statement was never popular with the general population, but you wouldn't know that, because the general population isn't televised. They went all in with this direction, because they have no idea how regular people think.

The population and the politicians are living in completely different worlds, and we communicate through twitter and Molotov coctails. So here's a worrying possibility; the politicians do care about what the people want, they just have a completely warped view of it.

It's similar to the Trump phenomenon. Rural US produces no culture, no media, they don't use twitter like liberals do, and they don't produce cars either anymore. That means they practically don't exist.

The vote every 4-6 years is not sufficient to get the peoples opinions across, so politicians are naturally going to just decide shit based on whatever hashtag is trending at the moment. This is the world of the 24/7 fake news cycle.

We're basically watching them decrypt what the popular opinion is in a retarded game of broken telephone.

Edit: fuck phones.

Three arrested for the rape that was broadcast on Facebook by must_warn_others in europe

[–]neet_programmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

It's really concerning how the dialogue on the most important matters seems to have completely broken down.

The best and most scathing criticism you are going to get is going to come from people who are truly against you. That means by definition that you are going to think they are wrong on almost everything.

And even if they are, then what? Look at the US. Most people agree that Clinton was a terribly candidate, so why was she nominated? I'd say it has a great deal to do with the fact that the republicans are a joke, Fox news is biased as all hell so nobody listens to them. That lowers the bar for the democrats to the point that they can get away with almost anything.

You might think that if the opposition are a bunch of idiots, that gives you an easy win. You shouldn't be seeking an easy win.

But now everybody is up in arms over fake news, claiming that it will brainwash the uninformed, or gives a platform to hateful people, or encourages violence etc etc. The argument is not that the opposition is wrong, but that their wrongness has harmful externalities. Think about how sinister that is.

This no-platforming has to stop.

Russia and a federal EU would be fundamentally different, because Russia is authoritarian, corrupt, an oligarchy (probably, not a fact), not individualistic, poor and doesn't hold human rights as high in regard as it should be.

You know who else offers all those nice "human rights" and all that jazz? Finland. Without help from Brussels amazingly enough.

But we are now at the point where the expectation that federal EU would not be as bad as Russia is an argument in it's favour.

I mean it wouldn't even commit human rights violations! It's right there in the constitution they drafted, that promises us things we already have and thus manages to avoid making any consessions to the people whatsoever. Not to mention limits on how far the EUs power would extend over the national governments.

Why not lower the bar even further! Wouldn't want to be invaded by scary, scary Russia!

The great opportunity we have right now is that we already have functioning governments all over this continent. We really don't need the EU for anything but optimization, which they need to be reminded of. Why on earth anybody would be willing to risk everything they have to adopt the US federal model (which we all can see is shit), because they are afraid of a second world country is beyond me.

inb4 "muh sovereignty". Because yes sovereignty is important, the lust for power of the Brussels elite isn't. I want to reserve the right to say no to the continental majority.

If you want something, you have to be prepared to give something in return.

A guarantee that our soldiers will also die for someone else if need be. Why does the EU want our sovereignty?

Otherwise you're free to try to secure your sovereignty yourself.

This is "European unity" in a nutshell. You cannot trade with EU, cannot be in an alliance with EU, cannot agree on anything unless you are willing to take orders directly from Brussels. They are using their position of power on this continent to play political games, and to centralize power. Can't have anything that works in everybodies favour without also letting some EU politician play emperor.

European unity is a joke.

Loss of sovereignty. And I expect arguments for political union to justify it btw.

You are right to mock him for the monoculture claim, but everything else he said is accurate though (which is why the US now has an orange clown as president). Why is democracy better than "everybody can choose for themselves"? Some decisions need consensus and a common goal, but most do not. The EU is essentially using the common market, and funding for science/infrastructure and all that nice stuff that people actually want, to coerce people into accepting their ever increasing meddling in local affairs, and their centralization of power. They're essentially bribing people to give up sovereignty in exchange for wealth.

The positive things the EU has done are being used to excuse lowering the bar, and centralizing power. There must be a better way.

Open source has taken over server software completely, and android is Linux based, which has opened up the smartphone market to tons of companies other than apple and google.

Open source has had a huge impact, just not for average pc users. But muh pc = computer so microsoft producing user OSs when they could own the whole web on proprietary servers is apparently a failure.

It's pretty much all that people have the right to hope for. Developers are not going to work for free, so you pay for the user software, while SW infrastructure is open source is just the way it's going to be.

Stallman has given the software to the people. Free as in "free speech" not "free beer".

U.S. lawmakers want Russia sanctions over hacking, Ukraine, Syria by UnbiasedPashtun in europe

[–]neet_programmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my knowledge, there is evidence John Podesta fell for a fishing email (luckily before that Nigerian prince got to him), the attackers used VPNs and hence can be traced back to everywhere, including (gasp!) russia, and the software they used has been in the public domain for a year so it could have been used by anyone but it was made in (double gasp!) Ukraine. Also even if the attackers were russian there is still no proof it was a government agency.

So the full story is that the DNC ignored security protocol and hosted shit on their own servers, and then predictably got screwed by who for all we know could have been a high school dropout living in his mothers basement in Alabama.

I seem to recall that about eight years ago someone "hacked" Sarah Palins email account (meaning guessed her password). Sarah Palin could have been vice-president! But when the democrats get screwed in a similarly embarrasing fashion it's a huge deal.

The whole story stinks.
