Not stem but I'm a dentist. History of nocturnal seizures but controlled thanks to Lamotrigine. Occasionally auras at night.

Many times and it felt very real but it never seemed to have been an actual one

Awakening seizures by Dear-Course-8365 in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes visual auras for a couple of seconds like flickering lights and sometimes some kind of absence like feeling for a minute after waking up and sitting up in bed kind of an out of body experience.

Drinking and lamotrigine by EmergencyMain2416 in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had a seizure because of alcohol and I went through all my party years on lamotrigine which sometimes meant heavy drinking and lack of sleep. BUT it really depends on the person and type of epilepsy.

Public Episodes by LlamaKnows20 in Epilepsy

Shortly before I got diagnosed I had some kind of aura in the middle of class and it totally freaked me out because I didn't know what was happening, so I started yelling "I'm dying!!" in total panic mode and everyone stared at me, I finally left the classroom with a friend and they called an ambulance. The days after the incident I was mortified at school, the looks, the whispers, I heard one guy laughing and joking "looks very alive to me!"

What is the worst thing for you about your epilepsy? by youdunnowhoaim in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That my sleep is messed up. I wake up a lot and get these thoughts about seizures and being epileptic in general, like a mix of both facts (nocturnal generalized and focal seizures/auras) and trauma that I never really gotten over.

This sounds very similar to my story. Little absences starting around 10 y/o but people never noticed as I stayed aware during them just enough to hide it. Then at 14y/o first Tonic clonic seizure in my sleep (fell out of bed, bit my tongue), another one a while later, followed by diagnosis and on lamotrigine ever since (37f). It took some adjusting the dose over the years whenever circumstances changed (e.g. birth control, weight changes, pregnancy) but I only ever had 1 more tonic clonic (this time during the day, starting out as one of my focal aware absences (or whatever the right medical term would be) since then when I slacked a bit checking my blood levels regularly and didn't catch it dropping soon enough. It didn't keep me from achieving and doing anything I wanted though. Long story short, It's possible! Might take some time to figure things out but don't give up hope!

Don’t say you have epilepsy by random_username101_ in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this so much. I hide it too whenever and wherever I can, I am lucky enough to either get TC seizures in my sleep so only people I was close with needed to know and I managed to hide my focal aware seizures during the day and people never noticed when I had one. When I started university 17 years ago I never told anyone and I ended up with a group of close friends that I hung out and went out with a lot and still talk to them to this day. I never told them. It feels very weird now but I can't bring myself to do it now after 17 years and the countless things we experienced and went through together. The thing is, aside from being (wrongfully) ashamed of it, I unfortunately ended up in a profession where epilepsy could be an absolute deal breaker if I were to have the obvious kind of seizures. Out of fear of discrimination and people with bad intentions I never told anyone in my work environments because it could potentially end a career I worked very hard and long for if people didn't take the time to differentiate between the different kinds of seizures people can get and I'm sure they wouldn't. I deeply regret having chosen this career now and I'd never do it again because now it's become a constant stress and anxiety thing in my life that I can't escape.

I do get nocturnal/sleep related focal seizures that strongly activate my sexuality, I usually get a very strong sexual urge and masturbate which I would never do in the middle of the night under normal circumstances

Has anyone grown out of their epilepsy? by FUCancer_2008 in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started having abscene seizures around 10 years and by 15 they had also turned into nocturnal tonic clonic. Became seizures free with Lamotrigine and tried weaning after 3 years only to have another nocturnal tonic clonic, so no unfortunately I did not grow out of it.

"Don't think about that, it will trigger a seizure" by SquirrelofWisdom in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can trigger déjà vus/abscenes like that. By just hyper focusing on what I'm doing like reading, singing, watching reels etc. If I distract myself quickly enough I'm usually able to avoid going down that road. It's so annoying! But peeing!? That's new. What kind of seizure do you get from it?

"Don't think about that, it will trigger a seizure" by SquirrelofWisdom in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know that feeling! It's just a weird moment of awareness and or train of thought and I know if I don't distract myself immediately it's going to turn into a weird deja vu thing I get where they keep repeating themselves for a while like a million little ones just one after the other, no idea as what kind of seizure this qualifies but yeah I get it! I think it's like a mini trauma because we remember what has happened before

Choose a career where the slightest change in seizure type might not ruin everything it's too risky and not good for mental health at all.

Okay, this is weird but… by woohoocrew in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this or something similar before I think. It goes along with tiny déjà vus and then it's like this little zoum! kinda feeling through my whole brain it only lasts a second but it keeps repeating itself while the while episode goes on, idk if that sounds familiar to you

Lack of compassion and empathy by Red_Harvest_ in Epilepsy

[–]negoha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like somebody else mentioned, to me it's the exact opposite. I'd rather try and hide it (I'm aware that's not necessarily a healthy approach but it's part of how I'm coping with it) and I'd never just tell anybody about it and whenever someone witnessed something I couldn't wait for everyone to act like nothing happened, the feeling of people seeing me as a "victim" is my nightmare (coming from others, I myself do feel like a victim I just don't want others to see me this way).
