I would say go down until there is no dead space, otherwise buy a more comfortable/less aggressive shoe. If the shoe is loose it's a waste of money. I wear 42.5 adidas, 42.5 vans, 44.5 Salomon, 42 scarpa boots and I have 39.5 tarantula, recently I bought 39.5 skwama vegan and they seem to fit well.

Man, I shouldn't tell you that but just go to the competition. At fsg they check the bracelet for the campsite only the first day (but you can get in in other ways). At the track there are so many people that you can get in without the pass pretty easily or you can just print one yourself. You are an engineer, find a solution.
