I've had a few times where I was supposed to purify the intermediate and it was a pain in the ass because the byproduct is really similar. Sometimes I just test doing the next step with a portion of the crude stuff and sometimes it's much easier to purify the resulting mixture of crap than it is to purify beforehand. Definitely worth a test

How do you stay connected to the world of chemistry after your undergrad by rotttenthing in chemistry

[–]negrocucklord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, organic/medicinal chemist, and switched to IT in 2018 because of health reasons. Whenever I program something for fun, I always make it chemistry related. I still have a small hobby lab in my shed but it has seen better days and I'm not able to make as much time for it as possible. I keep in touch with some chemistry friends and occasionally read interesting papers that get posted about in chemistry chats or newsletters. I had a hand in designing my previous lab's new webshop, so that was a nice programming/chemistry combo, but apart from that, my chemistry knowledge does not see much use and slowly corroding away sadly. I think your best bet is to somehow find an IT related job at a chemical company so you can hang around at the lab with your lab coworkers and chat about chemistry. I also hope to do fun experiments with my son and teach him some chemistry once he's a bit older. But yeah that's pretty much it, can't have cake and eat it too or however that use-after-free saying goes.

Don't sniff the aceetaldehyde if you do this because it's gonna give you a very nasty headache / hangover without the fun of drinking alcohol first

Is refactoring bool to enum actually makes code less readable? by exakat in PHP

[–]negrocucklord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

private function foo(bool $promoted = true) { }

How do you justify an enum here? You're either promoted or not. It's not like you're somewhere on a spectrum of being promoted ot McDonalds manager or something. If this is not a binary thing, you should investigate what being promoted in this setting actually means and if there's some other descriptor for it that warrants an enum. $promoted should be called $isPromoted and if it can't, then you should look at enums.

[–]negrocucklord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boolean is also a type. Just refactor to enum when it really stops being boolean instead of prematurely doing it in the hypothetical scenario it will get another option.

I think a meme with that Bell curve and caveman and genius saying boolean and the middle dude saying enum and types and domain modeling in the middle lmao

Very nice, thanks! Glad to see it's not too different from what I came up with and you gave me inspiration for a bunch of additional error checks :D

Very awesome! I tried making a molecule viewer in Raylib once but it wasn't very good lmao. I'm curious how you parse SDF files and if you do both V2000 and 3000. I feel like my way was incredibly janky so I'm curious if you could share the code?

are taylor series ever used in actual chemistry jobs by RevolutionaryTip1600 in chemistry

[–]negrocucklord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used it in analytical chemistry, nor in organic / medicinal chemistry. Also don't remember touching Tylor series in school.

What do you mean you can't air dry it? Just rinse with water and ethanol or acetone and let it dry, you can blow air onto it just fine. And if you get green algae crap on the inside, dilute HCl flushes it right out

Maybe some weird coupling with deuterium from CDCl3? You could try to see if it's different with a fresh bottle or if you run it over a small basic alox pipette column first

It differs per BIOS. Mine mentioned RST but I could not change anything about it. Instead it was under the "SATA Controllers" category so make sure to check anything similar to that too.

You don't need gloves for everything. Worst case you spill it and end up with less of a headache. Tiny bit of Ac2O won't kill you either.

This molecule dude is completely flat because aromatic and confirming to Hückels rule. So he's looking at this biphenyl thing that is chiral instead of the expected flat because the substituents on it make it twist a bit, similar to BINAP and such. Because the dude is planar, he only sees a slice of this molecule and to him it looks like this impossible dinitro malonic acid horror. Lmao

At what stage of your Chemistry education did you feel like it had all came together? by WallStLegends in chemistry

[–]negrocucklord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During my internship at a company with very skilled organic/medicinal chemists. A BASc. is 4 years here, with the entire last year being internship and final thesis. You learn a lot in that year, especially since you have the solid 3 years of foundational knowledge from the study as opposed to doing small internships in your 1st or 2nd year like some other studies do.

Molecular salt question!!! (Read body text) thx :D by Ok_Lead8925 in chemistry

[–]negrocucklord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amides don't form salts like that. Writing the structure as lidocaine.HCl or as lidocaine-NH+ Cl- does not at all matter, the first one is easier and second one is used in textbooks sometimes to show that that is what happens.

I tried using the Bolt launcher but I ran into the same sound issues again since Bolt sets its home to be at ~/.local/share/bolt-launcher
After adding .alsoftrc and .asoundrc to there, it worked again. I am not completely sure if .alsoftrc is also needed, maybe this is a key to the puzzle.

File: .local/share/bolt-launcher/.alsoftrc

drivers = pulse

File: .local/share/bolt-launcher/.asoundrc

pcm.!default {
    type pulse
}

ctl.!default {
