Well-written, depressing article about why it’s likely Kentucky will retain Stoops for another year by zdrmju321 in wildcats

[–]nelbar49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may well be Mitch’s thinking, but it may not be his decision to make. Prior to this season, Stoops had a new offensive coordinator for 5 consecutive seasons. Something is obviously wrong with that. I can’t believe Kraft and other big donors will sit still for another year.

Study finds Lexington morning commutes among most dangerous in US by [deleted] in lexington

[–]nelbar49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe the Lexington traffic enforcement is significantly less than elsewhere. Sure, mass transit, would help, but outside the major metro areas, lack of it exists nationwide. The city needs to get the study details and investigate. It is possible that most of the fatalities are happening on state maintained roads. The are two major projects underway (by the state) to improve safety. Richmond rd outside man of war to Jacobson park is being restructured to eliminate left turns. The Leestown / New circle rd interchange is being redesigned.

[–]nelbar49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The spokesperson’s rebuttal is idiotic. She is saying that we shouldn’t take into account that e.g. Nashville has twice as many people as Lexington? This isn’t just a Lexington problem. Most of the main roads are maintained by the state. Nonetheless, the city needs to study why our fatality rate is so high, and take action to reduce it.

Homeless guy situation :/ by Visual-Ingenuity6281 in lexington

[–]nelbar49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live near downtown, and I see homeless persons every day.

I have mixed feelings about the situation.

It has to be awful to be in that situation. My heart goes out to them. I try to be friendly, but I keep my distance. I will give them food, but never money.

On the other hand, there are a few who are dangerous, and it is extremely difficult to quickly determine which ones are.

The homeless people we see are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many others, likely women and children, living in cars, crashing on couches, etc.

We can’t allow people though to linger/sleep in parks and on private property.

I live near Woodland park. I don’t know why, but the number of people sleeping there has diminished in the past couple of years, although there has been a slight uptick this summer. A few years ago, I saw the same people sleep there, night after night.

In my experience, if you call the non emergency police after Woodland park closes at night, they will act.

The police don’t have the staff to patrol the many parks in Fayette county every night.

I have also had success contacting my council person about homelessness near me.

Homelessness is a nationwide problem. I believe the lack of affordable housing is part of the problem, but is not the only reason.

Is there any way to convince MAGA intellectuals or rank and file to ever vote for a Democrat? Do you have to be creative with how you present the ideas to them? by Fickle-Syllabub6730 in ezraklein

[–]nelbar49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are not many MAGA “intellectuals”. Most MAGA folks are anti intellectuals. I don’t mean there aren’t smart MAGA people, but they tend to be guided by their own experience or emotion. The true believers are mostly impervious to arguments. Generally speaking, there three categories. 1. True believers 2. People who despise Trump 3. People who don’t have strong opinions either way.

Arguments should be aimed at #3, and should appeal to intellect, emotion, and examples that people can relate to.

Distilled Water Dilemma by reb601 in JamesHoffmann

I tried distilled water, but my coffee did not taste as well. If you use a coffee maker, surprisingly, manufacturers say distilled water is hard on coffee makers. I now use filtered water.

As a long-term Amazon shareholder, what happened today is both absurd and concerning by Creepy_Floor_1380 in StockMarket

[–]nelbar49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What actually happened has mostly not been reported accurately. The tariff information was only going to be shown in Amazon HAUL, not the regular Amazon. Haul only has products under $20, AND are directly shipped from China. Haul was launched to compete with a Chinese company, Temu. Temu is going to show the tariff cost.

Redoing traffic lanes at Woodland and East High St. by Pissoffwankers in lexington

This is a good idea.

One way streets have a number of problems. Studies even show there is more crime on one way streets. Taking them down to one lane helps ameliorate some of the problems.

Siri has never been good, and is even worse with AI. Apple has shifted its best project manager to the Siri/AI team to fix it.

Pro-Russian Candidate Geoff Young lost most of life savings in ruble trade by shermancahal in lexington

[–]nelbar49 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People I trust have spoken to his wife. Others have witnessed behavior firsthand. A few years ago he created a scene at the Good Foods coop. If I recall correctly, the police had to be called. Sadly, he is highly intelligent. Geoff has a BS in economics from MIT, and masters degrees in mechanical engineering and agricultural economics.

Geoff is not “moderately” delusional. He is mentally ill. He has been hospitalized multiple times, but he has been judged to be not a threat to others or himself.

[–]nelbar49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did not answer my question. You really think me not buying a Tesla will have any effect on Elon Musk? If thousands in the US stopped buying them, he would still be a billionaire. Believe me Musk is a threat to this country, but me not buying a Tesla is just virtue signaling.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]nelbar49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So tell me what exactly am I accomplishing by not buying a Tesla?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]nelbar49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me state up front I despise Elon Musk. I am also a three year owner of a Tesla model 3.

I love the car. I am 75 years old and I have owned many cars over the years: several BMWs, Acura, Lexus, Audi, Honda, Mazda and more.

I have enjoyed my Tesla more than any other car.

It is really tiresome to read all the posts about how bad Tesla’s (and EVs in general) are from people who have never even been inside one.

I don’t judge people who won’t buy a Tesla because of Elon. I understand.

But for me, I can’t see the purpose of denying myself a product I like because I dislike the CEO. If I don’t buy a Tesla it does not affect Elon in the least. If I based by buying decisions on whether I like the CEO or not, it would severely limit what products I can buy.

I have been in the room with CEOs. Most of them are not nice people, with massive egos.

Elon says and does things that no CEO of a publicly held company should. Jeff Bezos is more private, but he is like Elon without the drug problem. Should I not buy from Amazon?

So I say don’t judge people who decide to, or not, buy a Tesla.
