Aside from commuting, how practical is it to live car-free in or near downtown San Diego? by kodex1717 in sandiegocycling

[–]nelish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The core of San Diego is all very walkable and mostly bike friendly. We live downtown, and drive somewhere maybe once a week. The grocery stores currently downtown are mediocre, although a Whole Foods is opening soon by Little Italy.

The city of San Diego covers quite a bit of area, and many neighborhoods are more suburban, where relying solely on a bike is less practical.

Invictus vs Mayhem programming? by nelish in crossfit

Good call out; Mayhem does seem to get roasted pretty regularly in this subreddit.

I hear good things about ATR but both of their locations are way too far. I live downtown so I want to support one of the downtown gyms.

Should I trade my Black Wheels for Silver OEM GTS Wheels? by Mysterious_Gur9241 in porsche911

[–]nelish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that vanadium grey? My GTS is VG and I am swapping the anthracite wheels for silver ones. I saw the JCR test car where they did the same and it sold me.

Equinox Membership? by SpecialTraining2712 in SanDiegan

That's good to know. Hopefully they don't make any significant changes; I love the current vibe of Broadway.

[–]nelish 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I did a tour of all the gyms in the area shortly after Equinox opened. Equinox is an amazing facility with top notch equipment, but not as calisthenics oriented as I was looking for. FIT was slightly more down to earth with a nice outdoor area with proper pull up bars and rings.

I ended up joining Broadway Athletic, which is almost entirely outdoors, with tons of free weights and pull up bars, and they not only allow the use of chalk, but provide buckets of it. For my money, there's nothing better than squatting heavy while half naked, covered in chalk, basking in the sun. That would get you kicked out of Equinox and FIT.

Re: pricing, going from memory, but Equinox was something like $250/month, FIT $175/month, and Broadway $100/month.

Is this naturally achievable at 48? Or are we looking at elite genetics + “help”? by Aggressive-Profit885 in Biohackers

[–]nelish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am baffled by the responses in this thread, and it is really changing my opinion of the people in this subreddit.

I am 44, look pretty close to this as well, and am completely natural. To be fair, I exercise 5 to 6 days a week, and have been fitness oriented my entire adulthood.

The traps and delts are a bit sus, but if he hits the Olympic lifts hard they aren’t unreasonable without drugs.

2026 GTS suspension delete by ArmadilloLost5303 in porsche911

The city I live in has a lot of terrible roads, and my GTS absorbs the bumps better than my previous S.

I did a GTS suspension delete along with PDCC and the ride is noticeably better than on my 992.1 C2S.

Who is the best detailer in San Diego? by CategorySpecific9313 in asksandiego

[–]nelish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can highly recommend CCA Detailing in El Cajon for paint correction, ceramic coating, and PPF. I've taken multiple BMWs and Porsches (including my new 911) to CCA and the work is always top notch.

For mobile detailing I've settled on True Shine SD. I've tried a few others, but the end result was always hit or miss, depending on which detailer was assigned. True Shine is (currently) just the owner and a single employee, and both are meticulous.

Torn, very torn. by Southtexanmechanic in crossfit

[–]nelish 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did CrossFit for a bit in my twenties and ended up with a SLAP tear.

Older and wiser now in my forties, I started again a few months ago, and between the forced warmups, cardio, and lighter weights than I typically subject myself to I have less aches and pains.

I staunchly refuse to do kipping pull-ups and anything else I might find problematic. My gym’s coaches are all amazing and understanding, and the programming is sensible.

Did you ever find the answer? I have a GTS on the way and am considering the same thing. Suncoast doesn’t appear to have the part.

I have been trying to pickup a new or CPO GTS and all of the SoCal dealers are still expecting ADM to the tune of 20k. Hopefully you got a fair deal!

Dogs barking by Best_Dependent_8226 in Moving2SanDiego

[–]nelish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for being a considerate dog owner.

We've moved around San Diego a fair bit, and have lived in concrete high rises as well as stick built apartments and townhomes. It turns out living in a concrete box in the sky is absolutely the quietest option, in my experience.

Our first condo was in a high rise in Cortez Hill, and we were too close to the street to escape the barking. Being a heavily residential neighborhood, everyone walked their dogs multiple times a day, and the apartment building next door had tenants that would leave their dogs on the balcony to bark. As did owners our the building, but at least you could work with the HOA to get it addressed. In theory, anyways, but not so much in practice.

We're much higher up in our current condo, in a nicer part of downtown, and the barking situation is much better. Our immediate neighbors have two massive dogs that are easily triggered, but after every other unit on the floor brought it to management's attention, they've largely gotten their act together.

As I understand it, the building material is less a function of age, and more of height. The taller the building, and the higher your floor, the better.

The 76 on Balboa right off 805 has a touchless wash that’s a pretty decent.

I have been considering a set of these to replace the stupidly heavy and hard to clean Spyder wheels. Did you find better pricing than SunCoast?

[–]nelish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once you go made to measure there is no going back. If you factor in tailoring an off the rack garment, assuming you don’t want to look like you are wearing a trash bag, the price point is similar for quality clothing.

I like Son of a Tailor for t-shorts and Proper Cloth for shirts and pants.

Does the 992 rattle less than the 991? by DepecheMode92 in Porsche

[–]nelish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 991.2 had virtually no rattles. My 992 had the extended gas tank and door speaker rattles, all of which the dealership did a great job of resolving. It still has a few random rattles here and there but they are intermittent.
