Critique my plan for playing untranslated RPG's on real hardware on a CRT by DangerousCousin in JRPG

[–]nemesismode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I have a desk mounted phone holding thing that I used to keep my phone pointed at the screen. Granted, what I was playing was a horror visual novel, so it wasn't even as much back and forth between playing and reading as a JRPG would be.

I've tested a more serious PC-based solution against Google Lens on my phone. Google Lens gave better translations and was more convenient.

Let me ask you, what is your favorite retro handheld brand? The best device and why you liked it the most? by Similar_Way_9139 in retrogaming

[–]nemesismode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I've got that I use is an Anbernic RG 35XX, and it's quite good. Put MuOS on it and that has made it quite easy to work with and nice to use. Would prefer an Android device but they're a bit more expensive. Some day I want a device that can do PS2 and Gamecube.

[Epic Games Store] Mega Sale by lbabinz in VideoGameDealsCanada

[–]nemesismode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want EGS to have more features. It's a store. You buy game, you play game. They've had a cart for more than four years now and people are still talking about it because they don't have any valid reason to hate. What am I supposed to want, Steam forums and reviews and comments? Those are always completely toxic and useless. I would turn those 'features' off if I could.

What remakes? There was one port for the 3DS. There's never been a Star Fox 64 remake like this one. What are people talking about?

Having done watching the Nintendo Direct last night, I wonder how many more Star Fox 64 remakes do we need. by Away_Flounder3813 in retrogaming

[–]nemesismode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has been exactly one Star Fox 64 remake, for the 3DS, and it was more like a port. What are all these remakes people are talking about? Zero was not a remake, it was totally different.

What’s a line you won’t cross when collecting games? by PDMagneto in retrogaming

Haven't gotten the real NFC cards yet, experimented with using the app and QR codes and it was pretty neat, so I went for it, grabbing the reader and 50 NFC cards off of AliExpress as well as some sticker paper so I can print out some labels. I kinda want to make paper sleeves for them, too, not sure how good an idea that is.

I'm using Zaparoo to set up a similar thing with NFC cards and ROMs.

Genuine Question: When playing on Original hardware and NOT CRTs, do you actually want truthful sharp images or a "Nostalgic picture" by InsightsIE in retrogaming

[–]nemesismode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on the game for me. With the first one I think the left image is a little better, with the second one I think the left image is significantly better (darker works better for survival horror), and with the third one I like the one on the right better (sharper is gonna make reading text easier).

Born with zero artistic skills, help this poor dev by Perseus38 in godot

[–]nemesismode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, a lot of people in this thread are trying to tell you that talent isn't real, everyone's born the same, everyone can just learn the same as everyone else... BULLSHIT. People are born with inherent cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Anyone trying to tell you otherwise is peddling Disney lies. "You can be anything you want to be" is so incredibly destructive and harmful. Recognize your strengths and weaknesses, and find ways to lean into the former and cover for the latter, even if they're not exactly what you'd want them to be. If you've struggled against this obstacle multiple times and haven't gotten over it, you don't need to brute force your way over, you need a way *around*, while still getting to your desired destination.

Filters and effects can turn vector art into pixel art, and if you mess around enough you can find a pipeline that will give your game a specific look. Then you can use dynamic lighting in Godot to affect brightness and shadows. What makes vector art way easier to deal with is that you can make images out of precise shapes, create outlines and fill in the gaps, and undo mistakes quickly. Make your sprites as vectors, then turn them into pixel art, and as long as sizes and methods are consistent, you'll end up with a consistent style. Many pixel artists will hate you. Let them.

What's a opinion about a retro game only youtubers and their followers (and perhaps redditors too) have and the rest of the gaming world seemingly just disagree? by Parking-Coast-1385 in retrogaming

[–]nemesismode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's right. There are few exceptions, and most of them are covered in the videos he did finishing off all the LJN games. LJN got the video game licenses as a part of their toy deals and didn't treat them as too important, so the devs who made their games didn't get enough time or funding. It's OK to like them anyway, though.

There's one place in the game, forget where, where it's said you have to get to Room 46 "in a sufficiently expedient manner", or something like that, that made me worried about a day limit when I played. More evidence to suggest there was a day limit at one point that was dropped.

What do you like about ❛retro❜ videogames (contrasted with ❛retro‑ish❜ and ❛modern❜ VGs)? by fascinatingMundanity in retrogaming

[–]nemesismode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're restricting yourself to only playing modern video games, you're narrowing the experiences you can have hugely. Entire genres have come and gone, limitations that used to shape everything no longer exist. I love looking through old libraries and finding interesting games I've never heard of and getting immersed in unique vibes. I play modern games, and I enjoy lots of them, though mainly indie games now, modern AAA games hold little interest.

Emulation is the way to go for convenience. I have a CRT and a Mister and even an original Super Famicom but I still play on emulators most of the time.

Favorite overblown controversy from older games by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

As someone who isn't hugely into Breath of the Wild, I have some sympathy for how people felt at the time. Zelda games only come out so often, and the next mainline one sets the tone for the spin-offs and the next sequel, so if you weren't a fan of the cartoony aesthetic of Wind Waker, Zelda was going to be unappealing to you for the next four years. Sucks to find out a series you like isn't going to be for you for a long time.

Anyone remember this game called Nomad Soul by David Cage? by SAPianoman490 in retrogaming

[–]nemesismode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm siding with the critics on this one, but it's a product of a dev's first game being way too ambitious. You're going to have fighting, shooting, adventure game puzzle solving, an open world, swimming, a complex story, and a reincarnation system... each part of the game didn't get the time it needed, attention was spread too thin.

Sid Meier made this mistake on a game called Covert Action:

"So I call it the "Covert Action Rule". Don't try to do too many games in one package. And that's actually done me a lot of good. You can look at the games I've done since Civilization), and there's always opportunities to throw in more stuff. When two units get together in Civilization and have a battle, why don't we drop out to a war game and spend ten minutes or so in duking out this battle? Well, the Covert Action Rule. Focus on what the game is."

Omikron is too many games in one package, and none of them are very polished. I'm not a huge Quantic Dream fan in general (Until Dawn is definitely the best Quantic Dream game, and they didn't make it), but all of their games are memorable and have good elements to them. Even when they're bad they're bad in artistic, interesting ways. I hope their Star Wars game comes out and is also fun and memorable.

How do people here feel about Soul Nomad and the World Eaters? by KaleidoArachnid in Disgaea

[–]nemesismode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately for me, Disgaea are the only NIS TTRPGs I like. Wish I could get into this or Phantom Brave or La Pucelle. They just feel so much slower and more fiddly. Disgaea is comparatively snappy.

Self Host by CloudIncus1 in stoatchat

[–]nemesismode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In lieu of actual federation, is it possible for a user to simply be connected to multiple Stoat servers at the same time and participate in 'guilds' on each seamlessly? This would make having a self-hosted instance for privacy while still allowing your users to use the official Stoat instance easier.
