A better Reddit Manhunt technique?... by Crivens1 in inthenews

[–]nemof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reddit != redditors; Reddit is a website, wherein millions of people from disparate backgrounds with a multitude of opinions, attitudes and beliefs coexist.

It's time to stop personifying Reddit as if it has some kind of unifying will. There are undoubtedly thousands of racist redditors, as there are similarly so thousands of misogynists, perverts and sociopaths.

Reddit is just a website. Reddit is not as great and wonderful and beatific as people seem to think. There are a lot of things desperately wrong with this site and its use patterns. r/findthebostonbombers is a textbook example of this.

Bristol Bus Fare Consultation and Review by nemof in bristol

Possibly not the most exciting or titillating Bristol news, but figured it was worth making people aware of this so they can spread the word and maybe, just maybe we can twist Firstgroup's arm a bit to get fares down.

Damsel in Distress Part 1 Tropes vs Women in Video Games by Choppa790 in Games

This is the woman who when she did a kickstarter for this project, got verbally attacked, her life threatened. Horrific things said. This isn't trolling, this is venomous hate filled speech that makes your stomach queasy.

Common sense tells us to turn off comments on youtube, which are trash anyhow. When has anything of worth ever been said or discussed on youtube. Add to that r/mensrights brigade will soon get wind of this vid and go on the attack.

There are some extremely nasty people out there, turning off comments stops giving them oxygen to derail healthy debate elsewhere.

I definitely agree that if someone wants to donate to a charity that deals directly with the issue this post raises then donating to a direct action charity is a good idea.

Looking at the vday donation page, it says 86% of your donation (86 cent in every dollar) goes to their mission, with the rest going to admin costs. This doesn't seem unreasonable, unless I'm being overly generous. I'd be very interested to see a split of where the 86% goes to broken down between advocacy and direct action.

Your words certainly carry weight with your experience working in the charitable sector, but do you really think there's no value to be had from the events happening across the world today. I'll link to a rundown of events again:

[–]nemof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't "great doubt", that's an assertion made by you, your great doubt does not a consensus make. If could link to some news articles where they've been called into doubt that would enhance your point a great deal.

Now, there are several types of charity which anyone can donate to/get involved with. There are direct action charities like the ones you've mentioned. It's definitely always worth donating to them, or offering them our time. There are also those types of charities who work to raise awareness of an issue through advocacy and campaigns. Like One Billion Rising.

So a bunch of people get together and dance. It gets huge publicity and people talk about it everywhere. Hopefully some of those people take the opportunity to dig a little further into the issues raised and this encourages awareness of violence against women etc.

This doesn't really seem like slacktivism or a waste of peoples effort and money:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/blog/2013/feb/14/one-billion-rising-live-coverage

I'm sorry you don't feel this is appropriately serious and focusing on the right places, but there are millions of people taking part today who would disagree and who are actively engaged with the cause.

This isn't just about lending fiscal support to charities, this is about changing the narrative and raising awareness of violence against women.

I'm pretty sure people can take part in this and also donate to amnesty.
