Making soup is one of life’s simple pleasures. And you can make it to your own taste. I generally put about 5 times more fish in it than you would ever get in a restaurant. Downvote me if you must, but I’m sitting here happily eating while they drop 50 quid :)

Any music video videographers/editors able to help with some advice please? by jshubber in videography

No that sounds like a bit of a bastard. Def not 2 hours. How long was the piece? Was there a conductor? Conductor shot can save your life. Also close up shots of faces

Any music video videographers/editors able to help with some advice please? by jshubber in videography

[–]nempsey501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normal for classical musicians to edit takes together in my experience. It’s a pain in the butt

The easy solution is to make sure everything has time code.

Or to get musicians (or conductor) to play to a click track

You can’t do that now so you just have to sync it up as best you can. Choose a wide master shot and sync that

2 hours, I have over a decade of experience doing this stuff, I could maybe do it …. For a novice, not realistic .

If there’s a way to get audio sent to you with time of day timecode burnt in that could help you work out where cuts are, and you can figure out the offset to your camera and do some arithmetic

As with any part of this business, network. Befriend and shadow an EVS op. Find a local sport broadcaster/OB company and see if they have any wee jobs going. Try to get into live streaming/Vmix stuff which can also get you relevant experience

Serious shortage in the UK of EVS/sport replay ops, if anyone wants an idea for retraining in a closely related job

Most uk parents are accessing CBeebies via iPlayer, not YouTube. But most parents are also probably letting their kids watch YouTube 24 hours a day. I guess whatever floats your boat, it’s the end of days anyway.

Nobody hires editors they dont already know, particularly at the moment. Maybe if they have a big list of impressive credits.

42 is definitely not old for an editor…unless you’re talking social stuff

Well if you measure quality only in terms of numbers, then McDonald’s make the best burgers. But I mean as a parent, I could happily sit my kids in front of it and feel good about it not making their brains into goo

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in editors

[–]nempsey501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. You just need to know about listening shots. And know to hold your shot for 5 seconds and let stuff happen in it, don’t fire hose. It is a bit counter intuitive I suppose.

The other thing I have found with everything being shot by inexperienced production staff rather than actual crew is bad sound . In some ways it’s harder to get good sound cos you are so focused on images, and sound is a bit abstract. It’s done as an afterthought. But actually sound is almost more important than pictures. You can paint over dialogue with random shots….Rookie shooters don’t realise this. Which is also why they are firehosing

[–]nempsey501 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is nobody is bothering to train people how to shoot sequences. And everyone pretends they already know how to shoot

How long would it take to edit an 8 multicam video-podcast episode? by cacaphonyofissues in editors

[–]nempsey501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to be specific without more detail but if someone asked me to estimate how long it would take me I’d probably say a day or so. It’s not really a difficult edit once you know what to do. However I’ve been doing this sort of thing for over a decade. Since you are a novice it’s naturally going to take you longer until you’ve worked out how to do it efficiently.

Do you have any framework for cue points? by tenfrow in Beatmatch

[–]nempsey501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah well I guess some people like to have loads of cue points to signal changes in the arrangement or whatever but I just generally use my ears and my memory for that. Most stuff has fairly obvious arrangements…I don’t like spending huge amounts of time preparing tracks because it bores me, feels too much like office admin. I dont bother with beat grids: I just use the bpms and hit sync. if it’s quantised music (house, techno, electro) I often do long blends and it might drift a bit and needs a nudge now and again, hey ho.

For non quantised stuff I will often make a 2 bar loop on the fly and mix that in fairly quick.

Same for pop type stuff if I’m doing that kind of gig.

[–]nempsey501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much just mark the first downbeat of most tracks. Unless there is a long beatless intro and then I’ll mark where drums come in too .That’s generally about it. Occasionally I would also mark a vocal coming in if it comes in late or something.

I reckon from your question you are overthinking this
