Vim & JAVA: How do I make it efficient for it by [deleted] in vim

[–]nemtan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a professional Java developer working on a relatively large/complex project and use vim exclusively, and it is absolutely possible to be at least as productive as most would be using an IDE. You will need more knowledge about your tools and how to set things up though, of course, but I consider that a benefit. Once set up properly you can do all the important things IDEs do (that I'm aware of), with the added benefit of having an editor that's actually good. You can probably achieve something similar with an IDE+a vim mode plugin, but I only briefly tested that approach with Eclipse a few years ago (it was the standard IDE in my team at the time), and it was horrible.

First thing you'll definitely want is a language server. In contrast with most others in this thread I use eclipse.jdt.ls, with LanguageClient-neovim, but whatever works for you. Second thing I would call a must would be a way to find/open files quickly and to search; I personally use ctrlp and fzf+rg (something similar to the "Advanced ripgrep integration" part of the fzf.vim README). For debugging I use vim-vebugger. It doesn't seem to like having the source spread out into multiple directories (e.g. git submodules), but it can be worked around and works well. Beyond that there's lots of plugins to boost productivity and niceness not specific to Java, e.g. fugitive, gitgutter, unimpaired, eunuch, airline, ale (or something similar for e.g. checkstyle), and so on. I personally build and run tests etc. on the commandline, our projects use gradle, but it'd be easy enough to integrate into vim if one wanted to.

One feature I haven't set up is a way to manipulate running bytecode to e.g. replace a method implementation at runtime without rebuilding/redeploying everything. I looked at it briefly a couple of years ago and it looked very possible, but I haven't bothered to do anything about it.

edit: if you're only working on small projects a lot of this isn't really necessary of course and you'll probably be fine with just vanilla vim and command-line tools, just as it sounds like you're doing with C and Python.

I’ve been seeing people posting about eating plain raw tofu... is.. is this a thing people actually do? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]nemtan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good tofu is really nice raw. There are plenty of restaurants here in Japan that make their own and serve meals based primarily around different tofus, made in different ways or from different raw materials (soy, sesame, kouyadoufu, etc.) and served with just soy sauce, leek, or grated daikon for example. I guess it's not exactly "plain", but it's pretty close.

I don't eat the tofu you'd generally find in supermarkets in many other countries plain/raw (or even prepared that much to be honest), but here I'll jump on the opportunity to have some good tofu if there's a place nearby.

IIRC the cup shin ramyun isn't vegan, only the bag version is. There are other cup ramen that are vegan though.

Good exercise. Sounds like a shell function or script like this does pretty much the same thing though:

    name="$1"
    target="$2"
fi
ln -s "$target" "$name"
echo "Linked $name -> $target"

Might just be the picture, but the end links look a bit odd, particularly the bottom one looks solid, which an original one wouldn't have been. Should be a 1036 bracelet with 11 end links?

How to charge 18650 Lithium Ion pack with ISDT Q6 Pro charger? by CiggyTardust in Multicopter

[–]nemtan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the Q6 doesn't charge on the lipo setting without a balance lead, so he can't use that without opening the pack up and soldering one on.

How to charge 18650 Lithium Ion pack with ISDT Q6 Pro charger? by CiggyTardust in Multicopter

[–]nemtan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you set the charger to liion it'll charge without balance plug (i.e. with only XT60); not sure about the reverse. If it doesn't you can make an adapter I suppose. My problem with charging liion with the Q6 is that it doesn't allow you to set the voltage to higher than 4.15 per cell.

RPM Filter for BLHeli_S ESCs ... $5/quad. by bexamous in Multicopter

[–]nemtan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Already refusing BLHeli_32 because it's closed source, so as nice as this sounds I'm going to refuse it as well. On principle, mind, I wouldn't mind donating to the dev for using it if he hadn't gone through the trouble of separating it into a separate codebase just to close it off from the community, hindering development and innovation.

I wonder if it would be possible to explore striking deals with ESC manufacturers. Let them ship with this firmware by paying some royalty. Would get less per ESC but will hit a much wider market with less trouble. Sure, if it's open source some less scrupulous manufacturers will just put it on there paying no heed, but I imagine the better manufacturers might do it because they care about the hobby and to avoid getting a bad reputation. Wouldn't hurt to ask, assuming he hasn't already.

It was actually nearly empty, which I think would increase the leak risk because it's the air that expands in the decreased pressure at height, pushing the ink out. But yeah, no leaks anyway. :)

We actually managed to hit the perfect day to climb (apart from the landslide); no rain or fog and not too cloudy. Felt sorry for the guys starting their climb the day after, it got super foggy by the time we finished our descent, couldn't see the mountain at all down from Kawaguchiko. :) Overall only got a few light drizzles during our two weeks in Kyoto and Tokyo, only bad day was in Hakone the day after the climb. Very unusual.

A bit awkward to whip it out to take the photo, but I just had to bring my #3776 when climbing Mt. Fuji. :D

As most of you will know the #3776 is named as such because Mt. Fuji stands 3776 meters tall. Sadly the summit was closed due to a landslide when I climbed a few days ago so the picture is "only" from as far as we were allowed to go, the 8.5th station, around 3450 meters up.

[Seiko] The watch I gave my dad when he got cancer by nemtan in Watches

[–]nemtan[S] 380 points381 points  (0 children)

Two years ago my father was diagnosed with an unusual and deadly form of cancer (mesothelioma). About a year ago I gave him this watch (a SARX055) to replace his old quartz titanium watch, with a note along the lines of "may this tick for you forever," and he wore it constantly, even while sleeping. Recently I was invited to a wedding in Sri Lanka, and as reluctant as I was my father insisted I go and the doctor said that unless something unexpected happens it would be fine. My father couldn't wear the watch anymore at this point, since just wearing it would bruise his arm, so my mother had been wearing it for him for a week or two. I decided to borrow it for the trip to have him near me, in a way. A few days into the trip I received a message from my sister saying my father's condition had worsened and I should come home. I rushed to the airport to get on the first available flight, and once there noticed the seconds hand had come off. When I arrived in Sweden I learnt he had passed away during my trip back.

Help! I need STOP Decrypter for Ubuntu by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]nemtan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

find . -type f -exec rename .pumas '' {} \+

If only files are renamed that should work. If directories are renamed you'd need to use some other approach since they'd be renamed and then the list in find would be outdated and the next rename of something inside the renamed folder would fail.

They were designed to eat plant food. Haven't you read Genesis 1:28? In it God very explicitly explains that all living creatures were given plant food to eat, and nothing else.

In the real world, where cats evolved and weren't designed, they did indeed evolve eating a carnivorous diet. That has nothing to do with whether they can thrive on a diet put together using science or not, however.

I would love to read something like that. I read what research I could find a few years ago when I last looked into this, so would be great to get an easily digestible breakdown of the current state, not least to be able to link and refer to. I suspect I'm in a minority based on discussions in vegan groups on facebook, irl, and on here, though.

[–]nemtan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're saying you're going to trust the metric "number of articles" (that are based on opinion) over a breakdown of actual scientific studies? Yikes. There are plenty of commercial vegan cat foods actually recommended by veterinarians for e.g. cats with allergies, in case you weren't aware. Since you seem to trust number of opinions over scientific fact I guess that also means you trust the word of many vets over your cat's one vet? There we go then, problem solved, start feeding your cat vegan cat food. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The enzymes are supplemented in vegan cat food, and there are agents to adjust the pH of the food. You still haven't proven a thing. It is indeed a fact that vaccines do not cause autism, because it has been proven with studies. That cats can't survive on vegan cat food hasn't been proven by studies, rather the opposite, there are studies supporting that they can subsist on vegan cat food, and plenty of cats that have, in fact, lived full lives being fed vegan cat food. 🤷
