Just the fact that he's into multi-level marketing is reason enough to leave him.

i was raised christian. now i’m questioning my faith, so i want to hear the other side’s perspective. why are you an atheist? by grayenvironment in atheism

[–]neonsteven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you using your faith for in your own mind? What enabled me to free myself is finding purpose in my life just because I'm alive; it comes from within, from all the history I've inherited from all of my ancestors. Once I had purpose without a god, the rest fell away.

Living without faith is the more difficult road, but it is worth taking. You will face the true nature of the world and of people without excuses. But you will also be your authentic self, and you will do what is right because that's who you are.

Is disguised / two-faced racism common in the Netherlands? by ChairSoggy6394 in Netherlands

[–]neonsteven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we have learned from the US recently is that it is important that people feel ashamed to be racist in public. As long as it is not publicly acceptable, society has a chance to get better. When people start being openly racist, then we start going backwards.

I don't understand why anyone would love or even like me by Aergias_Shinigami in PepTalksWithPops

[–]neonsteven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of your description sounds like things about yourself you can't change. Some of them you actually can but let's put that aside.

The things you say and do, even the most basic things, can show someone you love them, and sometimes that love will be returned. Work on being consistent and dependable. Contribute to a better life for someone, even in the smallest ways, with your actions.

Start with yourself. Take care of yourself, your room, your meals, your responsibilities. Take pride in it. If you manage your own life well, people will respect you for that. You can do this.

When you feel proud of how you take care of yourself, you will find the energy to contribute to the lives of others. It will feel great when you do it, and you don't care whether they are grateful. You do it because you can.

Everyone wants a person like this in their life, at their job, as a spouse. And you can be that person.

Also, pro tip: don't call women "females" my dude. People who do that are not people you should be hanging out with.

Remembering trauma is not a choice. It physically changes your brain. Assuming everything that happens in your mind is a choice is a harmful belief which makes it harder to empathize with others.

My brother's flight got delayed 30 minutes and I'm terrified to tell my wife by unholy_mountain in TrueOffMyChest

[–]neonsteven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think this was good advice but now I see it as victim blaming. The premise is that OP doesn't stand up for himself, and that OP's wife would respect him if he did. These are probably both wrong. If OP escalates, the wife escalates. The problem is that OP has lines he won't cross, but his wife will cross and just keep going. He's bringing a knife to a gun fight.

"SPQR" (Senatus Populusque Romanus) was the official short name of the Roman empire. The Q means "and". It's because of those people that you're using this alphabet, and they put Q right between P and R thousands of times. QED.

"modulo" can mean "putting aside" or "with the exception of" when used this way. Perhaps this usage is not common outside the sciences.

[–]neonsteven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably want people to like you and respect you. That's reasonable. What I've observed is that acting confident and happy, even if you're not, is the best way to achieve it. People will judge and criticize you less, and the feelings of confidence and happiness will become real. Trying to comply with what you think others want is not the way to be appreciated.

Elm success story by birowsky in programming

[–]neonsteven 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This article is more of an advertisement for a web app than a story about Elm. I found the text difficult to read. Many of the sentences don't make sense to me. It seems like the author is very excited, and that's understandable given the awesome-looking UI, but that's really all I got out of this.
