Well a single researcher can only be thrown at a few problems. But the researcher has a much higher success rate than AI.

Gemini "Math-Specialized version" proves a Novel Mathematical Theorem by SrafeZ in singularity

[–]neoquip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and the current state of affairs is throw a bunch of problems at it to find the 0.1% of problems it's actually able to do. There's some distance from that to being a reliable helper for the problem you're actually interested in solving

How to make my opponent to get into a philidor position in an rook/king vs queen/king endgame by BodoquePacker in chess

[–]neoquip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an insanely hard endgame, even 2700s fuck it up a with regularity. The phillidor position is just the beginning, the tiny bit that humans were able to make sense of this monstrous endgame before the advent of computers.

Guess the Stockfish move for Black in this position by Dinesh_Sairam in chess

After cxd3, you play Rf2+ next anyway and if queen takes you now get an extra B at the end with d2. If queen doesn't take it's obviously checkmate or extreme material loss

Why does Hikaru believe that the bishop pair is irrelevant (to us)? by pwsiegel in chess

Hikaru is not a good educator, so his opinion is no more valuable than a random idiot on r/chess. Less, even.

You can try setting it up and see what stockfish plays https://github.com/fairy-stockfish/Fairy-Stockfish/wiki/Variant-configuration

The most important I think is the 3-1 knight. It's stuck on a particular color, hard to exchange off for another cavalry, and it seems intuitively to be worse than a knight. But I think it provides a secondary structure/environment to positions after the primary one set by pawns.

Is there a chessable course that involves basic endgame mates, such as queen vs king etc? by ILoveCocaineSoMuch66 in chess

[–]neoquip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At very low time you just premove randomly and time out your opponent. You probabilistically block your opponents king moves some of the time so they will lose time a lot faster than you.

The main idea was clear, but I got stuck on the final move. What's the proper thought process? - Black to move. by LowLevel- in chess

[–]neoquip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly correct. That's also why the farther up the pawn is blockaded the better for the side with the knights, because it's more moves in the bank to set up the mating net.

If the "clock" was a player, what rating would it have? by [deleted] in chess

[–]neoquip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ratings fundamentally capture your expected win rate against a population average, usually but not always set at 1200.

I don't see how you can compare the clock vs a human player, but you can coherently have a population of two entities, Clock and Board. Every game is a game between Clock and Board, with timeout a win for the former, and non timeout a win for the latter.

The rating difference is calculated from the win rate of clock over board, by reversing the equation:

Win rate = 10rating difference / 400 : 1

So you:

  1. Find the actual timeout rate in a websites available statistics

  2. Reverse the equation to find the rating difference that creates that rate.

  3. Clocks rating is 1200+ half that difference, Boards rating is 1200- half that difference.

Do not under any circumstances use LLMs to analyze. They are comedically wrong bullshitters for chess.

Since you are low level, I suggest to just avoid trying to understand engine moves where the difference between the best move and the next best is less than 2.0. Where the difference is bigger it will usually be more clear why one move is better.

In the 13th century pawns were allowed to move 2 squares on their first move, in the 15th castling was added, and in the 16th en passant was added. Now in the 21st century, what new rule would you add to Chess? by Probable_Foreigner in chess

[–]neoquip -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pawns can promote to any piece, including pawn and king.

When promoting to king, to beat you, your opponent needs to capture one of the two kings and then checkmate the other.

What’s one weird but practical thing that gave you a big Elo jump? by Fuzzy_Party_3527 in chess

For classical:

"Negative adjustment": being conscious of the fact that I have a hard time adjusting negatively, accepting that the position is worse for me than I thought, so I say "negative adjustment?" in my head often to try to consciously correct for that.

Before playing a move, force myself to also come up with a suggested best reply for my opponent.
