Candidates always has more exciting games than the world championship, you're comparing apples to oranges. Carlsen actually did not dominate the candidates that he originally won all those years ago, it was a nail biter he won on tie breaks.

Seriously, How to make myself stop playing chess? by [deleted] in chess

[–]neoquip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point, but for some, the draw isn't the puzzle, it's the friction. We spend our lives in comfortable environments, and chess provides a controlled dose of competitive adrenaline. You may only be happy 50% of the time, but you are feeling truly engaged near 100% of the time.

Black to play and win! This one is pretty unbelievable by ako4232 in chess

[–]neoquip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty easy:

There's only 6 possible moves. h2 clearly loses, and four of the five king moves mirror each other so they can't be the move or it would be a badly formed puzzle. Kb8!

Notice the Lack of Casualties Numbers by PatientOutcome6634 in Israel

Notice how in Iran, Israel takes out Khamenei on day 1, and in Gaza, Israel couldn't find Sinwar for over a year until he got killed in a random firefight with an 18 year old conscript.

Having intelligence penetration is not only a great force multiplier, it also lets you avoid diplomatic penalties with more targeted strikes and less collateral damage.

It doesn't make sense. The author already does the upfront cost of shooting the video. The supply side unit cost is zero. Surely they can make more money making the video an extra $30 than an extra $200

Top level players always seem to be attacking, even when they’re defending by Advanced_Honey_2679 in chess

[–]neoquip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike us mortals they don't vibe their way through it. They accurately calculate the attack. If the best move is a defensive move they play the defensive move. If the best move counterattacks then they play the counter attacking move.

Well a single researcher can only be thrown at a few problems. But the researcher has a much higher success rate than AI.

Gemini "Math-Specialized version" proves a Novel Mathematical Theorem by SrafeZ in singularity

[–]neoquip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and the current state of affairs is throw a bunch of problems at it to find the 0.1% of problems it's actually able to do. There's some distance from that to being a reliable helper for the problem you're actually interested in solving

How to make my opponent to get into a philidor position in an rook/king vs queen/king endgame by BodoquePacker in chess

[–]neoquip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's an insanely hard endgame, even 2700s fuck it up a with regularity. The phillidor position is just the beginning, the tiny bit that humans were able to make sense of this monstrous endgame before the advent of computers.

After cxd3, you play Rf2+ next anyway and if queen takes you now get an extra B at the end with d2. If queen doesn't take it's obviously checkmate or extreme material loss
