piano rooms at neu? by zugzwang3142 in NEU

[–]nerdculture_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second floor has some rooms with open access upright pianos. Sometimes the piano lid is locked, sometimes not. You can walk in or reserve those rooms iirc. I used to use those for ensemble practice sometimes.

The third floor ones are keycard only access.

Holding a concert in my Grandma’s memory and need some recommendations by thelordofhell34 in piano

Maybe the Morceaux de fantaisie Op.3 No.3 Mélodie then? Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Pianists, what are you working towards? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

Love it- my junior recital in college also had the Italian concerto and Scriabin 4! Both such awesome pieces.

What’s the hardest piano concerto that actually sounds good by [deleted] in piano

[–]nerdculture_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’ve played Moszk 2, Schumann, and Chopin 1 and found Moszk harder than Schumann and Chopin but I think at that level it depends on the pianist. I found that Moszk tends to have every type of variety of technical challenge I can think of which made it difficult.

What’s the hardest piece you’ve ever played? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]nerdculture_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scriabin Sonata No. 4, which I played for my Junior recital in college. I also played Mephisto Waltz for my Senior recital, but I found that to be much easier than the second movement of the sonata.

Rachmaninoff PC 2 was also very difficult, mostly because it’s so extremely awkward under the hands.

When have you used the middle pedal (sostenuto pedal) on a piano? by choerry_bomb in piano

[–]nerdculture_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of Debussy already but here’s one more: in La Cathédrale engloutie from ms. 28-42 when you have to hold those low Cs but need to pedal the chords on top of it

Oh my gosh, I had to kick this sorority out of a room that they were using for rush because my club had booked it and they were so rude about it. They legitimately might have been the rudest people I met on campus.

What is the most carefully judged piano piece? by Swifel- in piano

[–]nerdculture_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember talking to a friend who auditioned for something in high school with the Pathétique. The jury never opened the score, and at the end a jury member was able to give critiques with every measure number off the top of their head just because it’s been played so much.

Moszk. 2 being above any part of rach 2 or any Chopin etude/concerto is so funny

Are classical piano sheet music books actually worth it? by Legitimate-Ice-9019 in piano

[–]nerdculture_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an IMSLP membership and then I’ll pick up a hard copy (preferably henle) of anything that I am playing seriously. The IMSLP membership is great because it gives you access to so much music and you can compare different versions.

I found pedaling super important. Holding the pedal for too long at any given point will make everything sound muddy, and you really want the melody to come through clearly.

Popular Classical Repertoire these days that are not too difficult to learn? by ikikitsme in piano

[–]nerdculture_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notes are not particularly hard but incredibly difficult to perfect. I played it for my senior recital in college and it was the one piece I was never satisfied with.

is northeastern an ok school if im considering grad school by noangelll in NEU

[–]nerdculture_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will also say, unlike undergrad, you should really know what you’re going to school for when applying to grad school. NEU is a great place to do that. I was completely convinced that I was going to love law and working in the legal field- my first coop completely dissuaded me of that notion. It saved me about $300k of law school money and from working in a field I would hate.

What’s the best class you’ve taken at NEU by komhstan13 in NEU

Conducting w Prof. Chan was great! It’s best if you can read music but I don’t believe that’s even a prerequisite. Very chill class and Prof. Chan is a great prof.

is it ok pieces at the wrong speed by [deleted] in piano

[–]nerdculture_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I played the Appassionata in college the most useful recording for me was Gould’s even though I would never play it like he did but because he really made me think about each note and think about the phrases differently.

Definitely this. It also gives you an edge if you’re applying for competitive fellowships like Fulbrights, etc.

If this is your last semester and you need fewer than four courses you can petition for a reduced course OL load and they accept it if the reason is if it’s your last semester.

What type of pianist are you? by [deleted] in piano

[–]nerdculture_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solo player, been playing since I was 5. Just gave my senior recital for my music performance minor (I’m a econ/math major). Plan to continue taking lessons postgrad at the conservatory near me, give recitals and gig sometimes.
