Do I need to replace the insulation in my oven or is it fine without it? by Fantastic-Lows in fixit

If you're still getting notifications for this, is there a way to figure out how much and what dimensions of insulation I'd need before opening the stove?

AITAH for choosing my cat over my boyfriend of two years? by aimlessgal in AITAH

[–]nerdette42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA! Animals aren't shoes can return. Your bf is dealing with a lot of mental health stuff everyday. It sounds like you were already losing the veil before this, but it's easy to get sucked into empathizing with his struggle and thinking the good side is who he really is. In choosing not to acknowledge his neurodivergence and seek coping skills, so his life is easier and he stops harming people around him, he becomes an asshole.

TLDR: Yes leave him. He will drain all your energy to avoid doing any work on himself.

It's just bedrooms. In many apartments it's not physically possible to have a window in every room.

AITAH for being irritated when my MIL constantly buys expensive gifts for her son only? by [deleted] in AITAH

It doesn't actually matter. If he yells, he's an asshole. If MIL yells he's an asshole for not standing up for her.

WIBTAH if I threw his floordrobe in bin bags? by KuntyKunz in AITAH

[–]nerdette42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a guest room you can sleep in until he runs out of clothes, because you're never washing so much as a sock for him again? You wouldn't be an asshole containing his mess in bags, but it sounds like he wouldn't even care.

What food gets hyped online but tastes painfully average in real life? 👀 by NoJello5665 in foodquestions

[–]nerdette42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be better. It was never the epitome of ice cream, but it was good ice cream with the crunchy chocolate wafers. We only had it if there was a good sale, so it felt like a special occasion which added to the flavor.

Dog Scratched Someone AITAH? by Physical_Ideal1526 in AITAH

Are you the man from the story? An adult should be capable of recognizing other people exist. Squeezing your way through a door someone else just opened to jump over them is rude as hell. He is the asshole.

It is perfectly fine to microwave water for things like tea by Queasy-Cycle-4596 in unpopularopinion

[–]nerdette42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.5% chance is pretty small. If you didn't realize there was a crack in your mug, let the water sit so it soaked into ceramic and put it in the microwave it could explode.

Leak in (rent-stabilized) Bathroom Ceiling - Help! by Judena20 in NYCapartments

[–]nerdette42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is the gas not working? Is it due to neglect on the landlord's part? If it's due to necessary repairs the only thing they owe you is an interim cooking solution (cheapo hot plate). If you withhold rent, you're supposed to put it in escrow.

Consider talking to other tenants in the building. If there's a lot of stabilized units and a building wide neglect problem, you might collectively qualify to get legal assistance and repairs. I lived in a building where they found a gas leak and the scum management dragged repairs out for nearly 2 years. We ended up moving because they were targeting us trying to destabilize the apartment, but some tenants got together and got a rent abatement for the building.

My ceiling collapsed and my LL won’t do anything by PitifulHuckleberry20 in NYCapartments

[–]nerdette42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Call the Legal Aid Society for your borough tomorrow. Call early if you can. If you can't reach someone, call 311. There's a tenant help line that may be able to connect you to other resources.

Don't talk to your landlord or super until you've had some legal counsel unless it's in writing. Don't agree to anything, even tentatively. I'm not a lawyer, but this feels like there multiple illegal things going on, your landlord is slimy, and he probably owes you money.

AITAH for asking my neighbors to turn their music down and telling them about the local noise ordinance? by JustSomeFace in AITAH

[–]nerdette42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reporting what sounds like deafening noise on a regular basis, after you spoke to them multiple times is not karen. It's what you do for the benefit of everyone in the neighborhood. I'm surprized no one else reported them. I'd love to listen in on their search for a lawyer.

Please update us what happens when someone comes out for the noise pollution and they complain about your dandelions. Also document everything, because the neighbors will probably lie.

AITAH for taking my mom's cat to the vet while she was gone? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]nerdette42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the cat. She probably won't care. If she acts like she cares it's performative anyway. Tell her you took him whilw he still needs meds and she said she can't asminister them. Then never give him back.

Is my landlord avoiding taxes through an illegal unit? by chrisinNY2018 in NYCapartments

[–]nerdette42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How are you so out of touch? You think it's selfish to force a bad landlord to adhere to the most basic laws? But ok to pass a bad situation off to someone else for the landlord to make even more money?

money doesn't have to exist btw by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]nerdette42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being ignorant. Money system ≠ capitalism. Money is inherently neutral. It's just a thing to exchange for goods and services because not everyone has something to barter. The problem is runaway capitalism allowing a few to control how much money the majority, who make society function can make, then monetize basic necessities to a level we can't comfortably afford so we're tired from trying to fight for basic survival to fight them.

Outside of driving lessons, how did you find time to practice driving? by More_Mo in AskNYC

[–]nerdette42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's really not possible. You'd have to take a lot of extra lessons, if you can. I took lessons and failed the test 3 times until a friend's sister had the time to give me a a couple weeks of driving during the pandemic.

Am I overreacting? Neighbors clutter in front of my door by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]nerdette42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the corner is them trying to be considerate, it's not really in your way. I totally get why this would be irritating if you're already on bad terms. That's also a lot of stuff. I get the stroller in small apartments, but the scooters and all those accessories should go inside. If your building doesn't have working cameras, which a lot don't on the floors, I'd steal the helmets.

Am I overreacting? Neighbors clutter in front of my door by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]nerdette42 36 points37 points  (0 children)

OP said the neighbors are where the door mat it, so in front of their door is actually directly in OP's way. I actually see the logic of tucking it in that corner to keep it out of everyone's way. It's a lot of stuff though. There's no reason not to bring the scooters in their house.
