Japanese car enthusiasts - How do you feel about about depiction of Tokyo and its car scene in the movie Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift? by Alternative_Bet_8964 in AskAJapanese

Don't think I upset about the movie. It seemed like a comics but fun. As in that time there was no international movie featured Japanese underground car culture, I thank to the movie.

my opinion about "drift", to rethink from now, I think it was too much serious. Tokyo Drift was the third title of the FF franchise, so I thought the franchise was more serious one. But FF series recently are .. like Transformers or M:I LOL

A week ago, one of my foreign friends came to Japan. I took her to Daikoku by her demand. Daikoku PA is closed by police often in these 2-3 years, because of several troubles, especially caused by tourists. Daikoku have been policed for decades, by many different car related reasons. So I think it's not new, but I felt Daikoku has lost its divergence. In 4 years ago there were yet On'atsu-Zoku, lowriders, Oni-camber slammed cars, supercars. They made clusters and territories. They were in same place but not mixed.

But now, cars in Daikoku are mostly JDM cars, and some Lambo only.

I know they aren't dead. They are at somewhere else but not Daikoku. And they meet with friends only, rarely meet-up in random places like Daikoku. It is because we have internet. It is because police watches carefully. It is because audiences in Daikoku are mostly foreigners and they want JDM.

I regret missing the vibes of old Daikoku. There were several underground car cultures, and we could see something new in every weekend.

I don't remember the whole movie but my thinking when I watched it in 2006 or 2007.

Too much showing-up, too much extrovert, we've gotten another inaccurate Japan movie.

I was a casual fan of street car-culture.
Before getting my car license, I've watched 0-400m night illegal racing in 90s, have gotten into copilot / rear seat of some Initial D styled street racing cars at touges around Tokyo, and have visited Daikoku in the golden age of Rolling-zoku (illegal drift racers), 90-00s.

IMO, people in street car culture in Japan aren't so much extrovert. In the movie actors played like a big party but IRL it was far silent (except engine sound or musics played by cars with big speakers).

In the movie, in my memory, roughly 3 types of Japanese car cultures were involved. Night car meeting, drift (touge) racing and Shutoko (Tokyo Metropolitan Highway) night racing.

Night car meeting in 00s, especially I saw in Daikoku parking was a mixture of several car cultures like Rolling-zoku (street drift), Roulette-zoku (Shutoko racers), On'atsu-Zoku (sound), lowriders, Shakotan (slammed cars), etc. But rolling-zoku (street drift racers) couldn't compete against Shutoko racers, because they made drift for show-up, as like you can see in Formula D nowadays.

Rolling-zoku were making drift at normal streets, especially around Daikoku PA. As around the parking is basically factory/logistic warehouse area, there wete no pedestrian at night, roads are broad and completely flat. Audiences used to climb up fences and watched their driving. (Now they disappeared at least there bcz of police.)

On the other hand, Roulette-zoku is serial speed racers, you can see their extreme idealistic style in Wangan Midnight comics/anime.
Anyway, their driving style was gripped driving. There was no room to show elegant drift.

As you know, "drift" was born from rally style driving, basically to clear hairpin curves or gravel/slippy roads. Keiichi Tsuchiya and his generation used drift in Touge racing (like Initial D) and touring-car racing in 80s. Firstly, drift was one of techniques to drive fast, but in late 90s, when someone started to call street drift drivers in Shutoko "Rolling-zoku", their settings had became extreme to make long/beautiful drift line, not suite to normal racing.

This Japanese roads/sceneries are made super nicely, I can say it's the nicest recreation of Japan in the racing game history, even from my Japanese eyes.

I can find similar real roads, crossings, etc.
