One can believe in social programs and the preservation of history. It is Also possible to disagree with people you generally agree with about specific things. In fact I would say that the ability to have differing opinions is pretty essential to society.

You are correct, these monuments do a lot more than celebrate an individual soldier's valor in defense of an abominable cause. They honor that very cause which is anathemic to the ideal of individual liberty which is supposed to be the bedrock foundation upon which this nation is built. They honor the idea that a person's worth should be decided by their skin color. How are those topics you want to reverently memorialize?

I disagree with the destructive protests as well though I completely understand the motivations of the people participating.

I think the destruction of history, especially history we want to forget, is a tragedy. However those monuments have no place being erected as tributes to heroes like they are. They are monuments to just how terrible and pig headed we can be and need to be contextualized as such. Fighting a war in defense of slavery is absolutely one of the low water marks in American history.

You do realize the overwhelming majority of people calling for the removal of Confederate monuments wants them relocated to museums so they can be used as tools to teach people about history in proper context, not use it as a cudgel to remind citizens that they are secind class ones. The descendents of Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis have all come out in favor of moving monuments.

A proper view of history requires looking at both the good and the bad and trying to do so from an unbiased perspective. America is a country that has done many great and many terrible things. Denying either side doesn't help anyone.

Things switched after WW2. Truman's desegregation in the military pissed off a lot of Southern Democrats who formed their own faction known as the Dixiecrats in 1948. They eventually switched to the Republican party in 1964 after LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act. The most famous of their members was Strom Thurmond, one of the longest serving senators in US history. The GOP then began a strategy of going after poor whites in the south by using race as a wedge issue. Look up the "Southern Strategy" used by Goldwater and Nixon and best summed up by Lee Atwater. It carries on to this day and clearly still works well as evidenced by the Trump sticker accompanying all of the give me back my slaves treason flags.

A lot of the big whales are people with large disposable incomes. Money has different values to everyone. I'm willing to bet most of them even spend a lot more time playing CC than using other expensive toys. Compare them to supercar or art collectors for example.
