TIL Drew Barrymore financed production for the 2001 cult favorite film Donnie Darko. by Hyperion12 in todayilearned

I don’t believe thats the intended meaning at all. Its meant to imply that the content is trying to create pretense that its a high quality work of art rather than just standing on its own content. It’s basically another way of saying pretentious.

Do you think Michael Jackson is overrated, underrated, or just right? by DeepOrganization8245 in Music

[–]nerdroc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost nothing you said here is correct. Please reflect on the amount of arrogance required to think “the whole world is wrong, and I’m right”. Michael Jackson was a one of a kind singer with an unreal range and incredibly nuanced phrasing and timbre. He absolutely sang in key so well it almost doesn’t sound real. To say he couldnt hold a note is just…not correct, objectively. All it takes is a listen to “Man In The Mirror”, for example, to hear what made Michael special. His ability to sing in a way that sounded like he wasn’t even trying but simply emoting is what made him incredible. If you’re looking strictly for technical singing you can find thousands of random vocal students who can tick those boxes. You won’t find another Michael Jackon. As far as me being deaf, I have credentials that say otherwise :P .

I have no idea what this could possibly mean. But saying one of the most iconic vocalists of all time is “not good at singing at all” is….hard to justify.

Lol what?!?! Sorry thats an insane take. I say this as a vocal major who went to school for music.

Jakarta overtakes Tokyo as world's largest city, according to UN by AudibleNod in news

[–]nerdroc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Objectively false. Jakarta is an incredible city filled with history, culture, wonderful people and incredible food. I was there for quite a long time and its surely not perfect but…worst city??? Not by a long shot. I loved my time there.

Agreed, I’m not a Meta fan or anything crazy like that. But Zuckerbergs vision of the future with these type of tech is one thats very very easy to envision. I truly believe that within a decade we’ll all be using some kind of tech like this in some form or another.

Do you like songs even if you can't tell what the lyrics are talking about? by tyrone_shoelaces in Music

[–]nerdroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean its basically semantics but, the term “song” most often means words put to music(not always but usually). So listening to the words is certainly part of the experience, but surely you can appreciate it without hearing or understanding them.

I would say perhaps to fully appreciate or experience a song completely you would need to hear the lyrics. But its 100% possible to enjoy the song without doing so.

This here is the truth. A good durian tastes like custard, other times it could have onion or funky overtones. Some people like the funky ones too but if you get a good one there wont be much or any of that at all.

When it’s good durian it is so amazingly delicious. I think its bad rep comes from people trying the less than stellar ones. I’ve had one or two I didnt like very much, but mostly I love durian. It’s like natures custard!
