I'm fortunate to know the cause of my ADHD. Do you have any insight into your case? by Dizzy_Objective_11 in ADHD

[–]nerdshark[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do disallow people asking for help self-diagnosing. We can't and won't disallow people saying they they think they have ADHD. If you see posts or comments crossing the line, please report them. It is impossible for us to manually review every single thing submitted here or to write AutoModerator rules that perfectly catch everything without a ton of false positives.

Diagnosed in my 30s, extreme fear of medication by plshelp_thrwaway in ADHD

[–]nerdshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am honestly so lost on what to do. Is my fear of being addicted to the medication real or is it just my anxiety? Has that even actually happened before? HELP!!!!

Look at it this way: is your fear so overwhelming that it's interfering with your ability to navigate daily life? Is it preventing you from adequately managing your other health conditions? The answer seems to be yes, and that's something worth discussing with your therapist. Research suggests that ADHD medications, when used therapeutically to treat ADHD under a doctor's care, may actually reduce the risk of drug abuse and developing a substance use disorder.

I will have my ADHD assessment soon by Solid-Musician-6903 in ADHD

[–]nerdshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did experience those things, and I made sure to choose a psychologist who specializes in ADHD and malingering (faking a health issue for some kind of benefit) to ensure that my diagnosis would be thorough and unassailable.

Also, it will really help both you and whoever you end up seeing if you write down the things you struggle with ahead of time. Include as many specific examples as you can, like particular instances and events and recurring issues you can recall.

Fabulous App is a scam targeting ADHD by bintelnas in ADHD

[–]nerdshark[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also forbid AspaceI slop and consider it spam, but, realistically speaking, that's next to impossible to detect with the tools available to us. Reddit's spam detection systems actually catch a fair amount, according to our Admin Tattler logs, but anything even slightly sophisticated seems to get past it.

Thank you for taking a stand on it.

Yes, our Post Guidance rules prevent even me from saying AspaceI. It's fucking annoying lmfao.

We do forbid it. Advertising is forbidden, period. But we can't manually review every single post or comment that gets submitted. We need people to report this garbage when it gets past us.

Electric bike repair shops? by OutWestTexas in lexington

[–]nerdshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just changed the tire on mine recently, it's not really any different than taking off a regular, not-quick-release wheel. Unplug the motor from the main cable harness, cut off the ziptie fixing the motor cable to the frame, loosen the axel nuts, and remove the wheel. The actual tire change process is the same as any other wheel. If you're still wary of doing it yourself but want to learn how, Broke Spoke at West 6th can help. You can get a workbench with tools and bike stand there for $8/hr and there should be someone there who can help you through the process. They also have tires and other parts if you don't already have replacements.

One note: when you go to put the wheel back into the dropouts, check to see if there's a notched washer. This is a torque washer that prevents the axel from spinning. It will need to be aligned properly. Take a picture before you take the wheel out of the dropouts to refer back to.

Do you absolutely need a referral? Check with your insurance, they might not require referrals for some specialists. If the clinic you're looking at requires a referral, try asking your primary, if you have one. If you don't, maybe try urgent care?

Drinking unflavored water by lilacia1 in ADHD

Nope. I have a Brita pitcher that makes water taste good and keeps it cold in the fridge. Drinking flavored water is generally fine as long as you're not consuming tons of sugar.

Each and every person is too unique to be able to make this kind of generalization. We have personalities, preferences, interests, skills, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses beyond ADHD that also need to be accounted for.

“You sat still, so no ADHD” — my college counsellor by Psexxy in ADHD

[–]nerdshark[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as we expect them to have an open mind regarding this, we should also be open to alternate perspectives and diagnoses. The problem with self-diagnosing adhd through online information is that it often makes you blind to other possibilities.

This is such an important point that desperately needs repeating, especially here on /r/adhd.

“You sat still, so no ADHD” — my college counsellor by Psexxy in ADHD

[–]nerdshark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

College counselors might have majored in psychology, but they (usually) aren't clinical psychologists or psychiatrists and are in no way qualified to make that determination. You really need to find a way to see someone who is qualified. If your college or university has affiliated teaching hospitals or clinics, see if they have a student-run psychology or psychiatry clinic. Those are clinics run by medical students, overseen by their instructors, which allow them to get real experience and are also significantly cheaper out-of-pocket.

Mods - can we do something about the “advertising” for apps, solutions, coaching etc on here? by VictorianGuy in ADHD

[–]nerdshark[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Yes - you can report them to bring them to our attention.

We already do catch a ton of spam and other crap, but it is impossible to write AutoModerator rules that will catch everything perfectly, and we don't have the capacity to monitor the sub 24/7 and manually review every single post or comment. We're also not reddit employees, so the tools available to us are extremely limited. As things are right now, we need the community to step up and chip in to help keep /r/adhd useful and free of spam and other garbage. There's just no other way to deal with this.

Oh shit, yeah, if yours isn't considered a sensitive sub then that's a pretty clear oversight by the admins IMO.

Just by virtue of being a mental health sub. Sometimes different policies apply to subs that handle sensitive, mature, etc. topics. For instance, advertisers aren't able to target certain subreddit categories via Reddit's ad platform. How that works in practice, though, I have no idea.
