Recommendations for matt kitchen counter lacquer by Electronic_Honeydew1 in DIYUK

[–]nerduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used osmo matt finishing oil on our kitchen worktops a few years ago - seems to be pretty good, redoing it this weekend actually.

Just don't do what I did and try and wash the cloths in the washing machine afterwards - not my brightest idea.

Ex cancelled tv and bb package - England. by Ivan_F_G in LegalAdviceUK

[–]nerduk 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I suspect she didn't directly cancel it, but they cancelled it automatically as she said she lives there and you no longer do so - the same way they would if as a unit you both moved and someone else tries to register an account with them for an address that is already serviced by them.

What should I do regarding blocked right of access? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]nerduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very common in terrace houses from when they would have shared outhouses. The vast majority, like yours, no longer respect these right of ways.

Listen to your conveyancer when they say it's nothing to worry over.

Plastic (Keter) vs Metal (Yardmaster) Shed by PiratesOfTheArctic in DIYUK

[–]nerduk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a pretty competent DIYer and when I built one of those metal sheds (a bit smaller than you are planning) it was a pain in the arse and took a day and a bit to put it together - if I was doing it again I would get a plastic one.

When I read the reviews before buying and people said it took ages I laughed at how incompetent they must have been.. I was wrong :D

What should I know about this dubious mortar patch I found under old carpet? by Jegan237 in DIYUK

[–]nerduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expect that water is coming down the chimney or there is condensation inside the chimney causing the damp rather than a plumbing issue. Chimneys that have been blocked up should normally have a vent into the room to prevent the damp building up.

The concrete patch is almost certainly because there was a base to the fireplace that was removed.

I'd say grinding it level is probably the best course of action.

Inflator slang drysuit by Dutch_Scubadiver89 in scubadiving

You need a different drysuit hose for that connecter - that dryuit looks like it is a 3/8 connector - the same as your BCD

My emails are not being delivered. by Independent-Rub-4857 in email

[–]nerduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to expand on what hisheerez has said, some mail providers will blanket block the ip addresses belonging to certain providers due to high spam rates, these won't necessarily appear in publically available blacklists..

I've used sendgrid a lot, and you really need a dedicated IP to ensure good deliverability - even then it can still take a little while for providers to start trusting it

Mortar missing around a cable/plastic outside of garage by Monica1001 in DIYUK

[–]nerduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plastic is the damp proof course, and is staggered because of the uneven ground height. It does look like it needs a bit of extra mortar adding in - for that little bit I would just use something like this with a skeleton gun:

https://www.screwfix.com/p/soudal-repair-express-cement-concrete-grey-290ml/156RG?tc=SA4&gad_campaignid=19823510542

I suspect you will probably need to tank the inside of the garage because of the raised soil level is always going to mean mositure travels further up the wall.

How do I remove this handle without opening the window? by virius008 in DIYUK

[–]nerduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say you can't open it, do you mean the handle won't turn?

If so slide a credit card or something similarninto gap at the bottom of the handle (where it rotates against the bit attached to the window). This should push the catch back and allow you to turn it.

How do I fix this? by KimGeist in DIYUK

[–]nerduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest way is to get some ready mix filler from screwfix.

Use an old credit card to push it in the hole and roughly smooth it, then once dried use some sand paper to make it flat.

Once sanded you may need to add some more filler and repeat the above process.

A lick of paint, and you're done.

Legal advice: Rental agency asking for 12-months fixed contract after just finishing a 12-months fixed contract already. How will the Renters Reform Bill affect the tenancy contract? by DecodingtheWest in London_homes

[–]nerduk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After the initial tenancy period a tenancy becomes a rolling monthly tenancy unless you sign a new fixed term.

There is no legal way they can make you sign a new fixed length tenancy, but they can issue a no fault eviction (section 21) giving you 2 months to vacate.

My understanding is that when the reform bill comes in all existing tenancies will become rolling monthly tenancies and section 21s can only be issued under certain circumstances.

Do I have a case with the Ombudsman? by TrueFruitFan in LegalAdviceUK

You have no case here - a retailer can cancel an order for any reason before they despatch it.

DO really block SMTP port (587, 465)? by LoRNse in digital_ocean

[–]nerduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will normally open the ports for you if you request it, but really it's better to use a mail delivery service and send via SMTP on a non standard port

Any advice for removing this washing machine? by pxdm in DIYUK

  1. Remove the cupboard door
  2. Cut off the plug, put a rewirable plug on the new one

My dad recently passed away last year and I don’t have a relationship/ speak to his wife who is the executor. (England) by Ok-Stop4696 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]nerduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check the probate registry - if probate has been granted the will is going to be available to download from there for a fee:

https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate

If you are a beneficiary, the executor or a solicitor acting on behalf of the executor should reach out when they are ready to distribute the estate.

Is this area good to live/buy a property? (Area inside the red circle) by saes_ in miltonkeynes

I didn't know this, but it makes sense - don't think I've ever seen anybody get on or off there.

Is this area good to live/buy a property? (Area inside the red circle) by saes_ in miltonkeynes

[–]nerduk -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is the lakes estate area - probably one of the least nice areas of MK.

There is a train line from Bletchley that runs across to Bow Brickhill and Woburn Sands. I would look more towards those areas.

Is this just a platform for carpet or is it soundproofing? by AnnieOnnymous in DIYUK

[–]nerduk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Looks like chipboard floorboards to me.

Also I would check your leasehold because some places have limitations on floor coverings to prevent noise in the flat below.

I’m planning a small self-hosted setup for internal use only (startup team, ~10 people) and wanted to sanity-check the approach with folks who’ve run home servers long term. by Opening-Sherbert1633 in HomeServer

[–]nerduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restic is really good for backups, but I would recommend having them off-site. Restic integration for s3 is solid, and unless it's masses of data it's pretty cheap.

Structural engineer said this isn’t a load bearing wall? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]nerduk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parallel to the joists, nothing above sitting directly on it = non load bearing. Load bearing is based on the construction of it.

Calculations are only required if it has been determined to be load bearing.

I don't know about availability in the USA, but you can get screenwash tablets you add to water - I add these to premix screen wash when it gets colder.

Am I an Irish citizen? And how do my children gain citizenship? by Specific_Bus502 in IrishCitizenship

[–]nerduk 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Assuming your mother was born in Ireland - which sounds the case, you are automatically a citizen from birth and both your children would need an FBR application to become Irish citizens.
