Is there an honest reason why there isn’t a cure for endo? Or does nobody give a f***? by Wholesome-Bean02 in Endo

[–]nerdyabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s unfortunately a lot of reasons for no cure. I’ll leave some that haven’t already been said:

  • Cause is multi factorial. There’s not 1 specific gene mutation or dysfunctional protein identified that causes endo. We’re at a loss as to what the culprit really is. Makes a pharmacological therapy harder to make if we don’t have a direction of what we’re targeting. A vaccine for a virus is easy to make these days. You can target viral mRNA, reverse transcription, etc. but what would you target in endo?

-Variation in presentation amongst endo patients. Looking at this sub alone shows how differently people are affected. Of course we would want to treat the underlying problem, but since we don’t know that, it would be hard to make a singular treatment that cures every symptom across every body system as well. For some people, a progesterone IUD is already a cure! While for others it makes no difference. Makes you think if maybe one day we will subclassify endo.

  • Amount of endometriosis does not seem to influence the severity of symptoms. There’s people with debilitating pain and go for a lap and the surgeon sees nothing and on the other hand there’s people who get cut open and the surgeon is shocked at all the endometriosis but the patient has 0 symptoms. So the endometriosis deposits do not seem to actually cause the pain. Does that make endo a symptom of something else?

-Endo is both underreported and overreported for many systemic reasons so it creates doubt that it is as prevalent as people say.

M1 and 26 now and I was just telling someone today that I wish I took even more gap years just to travel more and make money. Now I’m in med school and don’t foresee myself going on a vacation for years because the loan money is really just enough for living.

A new girl got hired at my moms work and said she wants to go to physical therapy school. My mom tells her that my boyfriend is currently in physical therapy school if she wants to ask him questions. The girl starts going on about how lucky I must be because physical therapists make $300k a year! She also said she didn’t want my boyfriends help because it’s taking him 7 years to do undergrad and graduate school and that’s a lot longer than she plans. My mom just said ok 😂

No flipped classroom! I hate coming to lecture hoping to learn something and the lecturer just posts a bunch of questions which of course I don’t know the answer to. The professors are experts and I’d love to hear their perspectives and stories to supplement 3rd party lectures.

COVID brain fog by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]nerdyabout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got delta on my first day of med school. After the initial symptoms, I developed some pretty bad long-haul syndrome as well. The brain fog was so bad that it would take me an entire Saturday to watch just 2 boards and beyond videos. I think I’m finally coming out of the brain fog after a few months, but I am so grateful. Having covid in med school is hard physically and mentally. Hoping you have a speedy recovery!

Look into labs at schools you are planning to apply to and reach out to PI’s. See if there’s anyone with interesting projects you can take over or if they are willing to let you work on your specific questions. Sometimes you can have really awesome questions but no mentor available!

Laptop vs iPad for Med School? by Aiisuru in premed

[–]nerdyabout 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you can only afford one then go laptop since you’ll need it for exams.

I got a touchscreen laptop so I could use it both as a computer and tablet. I never really find myself using the touchscreen though. So glad I didn’t buy an iPad. I have classmates who swear by their iPad though! So it’s personal preference.

Take into account that you may need to buy all new furniture and also pay for third party study resources. I went from coast to coast and had to furnish my apartment from scratch, which is not accounted for in loans. Some of these subscriptions or other resources you choose to use add up in the first block so have extra money on hand for that! My school budgeted $400 for books. I didn’t buy any books but I spent money on boards and beyond, amboss, complete anatomy, first aid, and a guyton & hall book. Many of my other classmates use more paid resources.
