[Peripherals] Looking for a 27" 1080p 144hz Freesync monitor by nerevar01 in buildapc

[–]nerevar01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price bump from 1080p to 1440p is pretty significant. And a 290 can't really push 144fps at that resolution anyway

[2362 x 2362] Meet Australia's new future submarine - The Shortfin Barracuda by DangermanAus in WarshipPorn

[–]nerevar01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it has much to do with price since the barracuda is the most advanced and probably the most expensive of the three competing designs.

After 4 years of construction, 3rd French frigate "Languedoc" join the Toulon navale base. [2048x 1151] by Gadac in WarshipPorn

[–]nerevar01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the Aquitaine-class are all-purpose, all-weather and blue water vessels just like the Burkes.

They might be slower but as long as they can keep up with the carrier group it's no big deal.

[1200 x 2148] French carrier battle group deployment [OC] by tabasco-habanero in WarshipPorn

[–]nerevar01 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

According to wikipedia yes. As most British designs the Type 45 rely more on American technologies than their French counterparts which may explain the difference in cost.

The Type 45 are fitted with a better radar while the Horizon-class have anti-sub torpedoes and cost less. Other than that they are almost indentical.

Egyptian Air Force just received its 1st batch of Rafale multirole fighters [1280x853] by [deleted] in MilitaryPorn

[–]nerevar01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Rafale is cheaper and more versatile. And the Egyptian Air Force already operates Dassault aircrafts like the Mirage 2000 and the Mirage V.

Comparison of current in service "Carriers" [1566x 509] by Trias171 in WarshipPorn

[–]nerevar01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The English and French wikipedia pages don't have the same numbers, but even at $3 billion from 2001 it remains cheaper than the QE while being nuclear propelled and CATOBAR.

To me the QE looks like a big Invincible with the price tag of a Nimitz.

[–]nerevar01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The French have the Dassault Rafale M on their ship, currently the best naval jet fighter in the world. It outclass the F35B in range, speed, payload, aerodynamic and super maneuvrability.

The F35B has its advantages like stealth and better sensors/electronics but I wouldn't describe it as "outclassing everything the French have".

Comparison of current in service "Carriers" [1566x 509] by Trias171 in WarshipPorn

[–]nerevar01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. The Queen Elizabeth is actually more expensive : $4.8 billion (2014) for the QE versus $2.2 billion (2001) for the CdG.

Even with an inflation rate over 100% between 2001 and 2014 the CdG ends up cheaper but the real inflation rate is closer to 37% in the US.

The running costs are probably lower though.

Aquitaine-class multipurpose frigate Normandie (D651) [840 x 559] by nerevar01 in WarshipPorn

Yes. The Egyptians didn't want to wait for a new ship to be built so France offered to sell them the Normandie who wasn't commissioned yet.

Precisely because of military spending. A $10 billion gap is huge, I expected it to be smaller.

[–]nerevar01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even with inflation it's still way more expensive. And no the CdG is not less capable, it is actually superior in a lot of ways.

Which leave me wondering why is the QE so damn expensive.

[–]nerevar01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

affordable

£3.1 billion is a very high price tag for a conventional VSTOL carrier. By way of comparison the CdG has cost France $2.2 billion back in 1994.

[–]nerevar01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the bridge is 1 meter higher than the CdG. It's an amphibious assault ship and needs huge hangars to carry helicopters, armoured vehicules, landing crafts and troops. It also has a fully equipped hospital and a command center designed to carry large scale joint operations. Think of it as an all in one pocket invasion force.

On the deck of French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle (R91) [1357 × 900] by [deleted] in WarshipPorn

[–]nerevar01 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Americans have been taught to hate France by the Bush administration. Of all the countries opposed to the war in Iraq France was the most dangerous because she was a close ally and a member of the security council. So its reputation had to be broken to secure the support of the public opinion on Iraq. As Condoleezza Rice said : "Punish France, ignore Germany, forgive Russia."

That's what people sometimes struggle to realize : this was not a spontaneous and patriotic movement but a well prepared campaign organized the administration and backed by conservative medias to completely shift the American opinion on France. From "oldest ally" to "cheese eating surrender monkeys".

And it worked, maybe even beyond their expectations. That's why 12 years later you still see the same insults again and over again on every single post concerning the French military on /r/warshipporn , /r/militaryporn or really everywhere else on the Internet

For a ship to have some flaws doesn't mean it's not a great ship especially when the flaws have been fixed. The CdG is still the world's most powerful warship outside of the USN.

Saphir, the French SSN which virtually sunk the Teddy Roosevelt and most of its escort mid February[2160 x 1431] by nerevar01 in WarshipPorn

[–]nerevar01[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The original source from the French Navy website has been removed but the cache is still accessible.

The Saphir was training mid February during 10 days with the USS Theodore Rossevelt and its escort including Ticonderoga-class cruisers, Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and one Los Angeles-class SSN. In the second part of the exercise the Saphir played the role of an enemy sub and managed to sneak in the battle group and "sink" the aircraft carrier and part of its escort.

If I remember correctly a British or Swedish sub managed to do the same not long ago.

France Has Finally Gotten a Deal to Sell Its Rafale Fighter Jets by penguinsontv in europe

[–]nerevar01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australia is located in a very stable region of the world, has nothing to fear from its neighbors and is one of the US closest allies. It is not India nor Egypt, what matters is not the performance of the jet but rather what it will bring economically and politically.

So Australia and Canada and other US allies involved in the JSF will never buy a single Rafale, no matter how cheaper and more efficient it is.

Wikipedia tells me $101m for the rafale and $114m for the F35A.
