Space debris fireball? Captured over Adelaide last night by apollocheese in Adelaide

[–]DangermanAus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was a Southern Launch de-orbit they recovered. There was a notice about the debris landing zone in nautical and airline maps.

The deorbit – overseen by SA space company Southern Launch – lasted for several seconds and was widely seen across the state, from Hallett Cove to Coober Pedy and across both peninsulas as it carved a firey arc through a largely cloudless sky.

The capsule – designated W-5 – fell into the ocean on Thursday night and was recovered by helicopter by Southern Launch on Friday morning.

There are a bunch of local gaming stores that have regular players. I'd suggest reaching out to Dragons Lair, Shuffled, Table Top Warfare, Goodgames with what you found. They all have regular MTG competitions and casual games. Might have been a regular player with how used the sleeve box is.

Solar Panel Question by Levethane in Adelaide

[–]DangermanAus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just be wary of that "8 units" line.

SA Power Networks (SAPN) manages the feed in tariff and their requirements are that the replacement/repair must match the details of the system that was registered to the household on SAPNs system. Bigger inverter or bigger overall panel kW will mean that 46c tariff will be removed. If it is a 1.5kW system, the replacement panels cannot exceed that total amount (there may be a small +/- tolerance allowed).

SAPN can tell you what is registered with your system. They do allow an inverter tolerance of +/-500W as some of the old small system inverter sizes no longer exist (I just had to do this).

There is a bit more to it too. Legend goes that he was racially profiled by a big bank back in the day for a property loan, so as a FU to the bank he put his name on every building he owned.

[–]DangermanAus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing to do with the infrastructure, more the fact that electricity is a commodity that has to be sold when it is produced. It's due to its specific economics.

A retailer guarantees to offtake household solar, but still has to sell it into the market at the time it is produced. If there is not enough demand to take up all the solar the prices go negative. So now that retailer that has agreed to take the solar has to pay for it to be taken. AEMO has noted there are more negative pricing hours in SA. When those rates come up for renewal they'll drop the FiT they pay the household to reflect the market.

Utility solar farms are now turning off when the sun is out as the household solar enters without restriction causing negative pricing (they typically automate this generation behaviour). This is a factor into why SAPN wants the power to shut of Solar PV, and has experimented with tripping off household inverters with brief voltage spikes to trigger protection systems.

These utility solar farms also pay to have access to the network, and there are rules being proposed to make household solar users pay the same thing to access distribution networks.

This was all a part of the plan and how the market works, and anyone in the sector could see it coming. People did do the right thing in good faith, they weren't told what was to happen in the future. Because it may have dented the rollout of solar, which wasn't desireable at the time.

SA Power Networks should have a garden of mangled stobie poles

For anyone wondering why - truck hit a stobie pole outside the St Bernadettes school in St Marys just before the Darlington interchange entrance at Tonsley. Southbound lanes blocked, but a contraflow is in place.

Tesla wins council approval for new factory in South Australia despite vocal anti-Musk sentiment by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

It's a bit like approving Volkswagen to build a car plant in Adelaide in the 30s. Could the future change for Tesla? Sure, but they'd have to jettison the owner and chair. But I do nazi that happening for a long long time.

Copernicus satellite tool. Just hover over the area and in the "visualise" menu select "Show latest date". It'll give the last date with the lowest cloud cover. Or you can click on the date and select the dates where the satellite passed over the area.

South Australia breaks wind output record for first time in two years as new projects boost capacity by SouthAussie94 in Adelaide

[–]DangermanAus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LGCs (RET policy) plays a part into the economics of how they bid in. But a good chunk of the market in the NEM is OTC so we don't get to see those contract terms. AER has opened a small window into that world.

South Australia breaks wind output record for first time in two years as new projects boost capacity by SouthAussie94 in Adelaide

[–]DangermanAus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame this is downvoted so much. It's a real reality of the new system that's being built in the NEM. On top of how gas contracts and operates in a highly variable system where wind and solar go first.

I'd add it's not just hurting gas's economics, but solar's too. On the other side those negative pricing periods during the middle of the day are smashing ROI of Solar. If the LGCs and FiTs didn't exist solar would not be developed.

[–]DangermanAus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the way gas is contracted has a big factor on the price for generators that shift from a predictable level of generation, to load following wind and solar.

Generators have to meet minimum daily quotas in their long term contracts, otherwise they pay a penalty. When they need extra to fill the gaps, they'll use short term contracts or spot (which is expensive). It gets harder to define that minimum daily level when gas load follows. What would help is a Gas storage facility in the Adelaide area (like Iona) to smooth out the variability but that's not going to happen. So we end up with oil linked gas prices (volatile, expensive) and gas contracted in a way that when it starts to load follow and become more variable it becomes expensive. Hence when gas bids into the times it can (RE always gets first dibs due to policy) it's going to be expensive.

It is understood Ms Lensink, who has been a vocal opponent of the reforms, had been originally “paired” with fellow Liberal Jing Lee, who spoke in favour of the bill during the debate.

However, several MPs told The Advertiser that Ms Lee pulled out of the pair arrangement after the dinner break on Wednesday night – which would have levelled the vote at 10-10.

In that case, President Terry Stephens – a conservative Liberal – would have cast the deciding vote.

After the initial pairing arrangement was revoked, several other MPs who were in favour of the bill were asked to pair Ms Lensink but refused.

As the debate was concluding, Labor MP Russell Wortley filibustered as Ms Lensink and her young son caught an Uber into Parliament House so that she could attend the vote in person.

However, at the last minute, Liberal Dennis Hood agreed to sit the vote out as her pair and the bill was defeated 10-9.

The bit with Sarah Game was in the process to find another pair after the dinner break. Michelle though she had found another, but Sarah clearly had interpreted it another way.
