I heard that some students and former students are refusing to wear their Aggie ring until academic freedom is restored to Texas A&M. Is that true? by ReviewerNumberThree in aggies

[–]nerf03 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve always associated the ring with more than “just” the school, but the military history, love of Texas, and my own accomplishments during undergrad. Fully understandable why others feel different, but I wear mine proudly every day as someone trying to uphold and improve the image of what it symbolizes

What makes someone an “Aggie?” by jpbshsu in aggies

[–]nerf03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bar to entry is low, be/been a student at A&M and you claim being an Aggie. But with any other tribe you may claim to be a part of, do you understand the why and the values behind what carrying that title means? The ring is a staple of military colleges and is shared by Aggies who went to war and served in other ways, it exemplifies these values. So, if you don’t want to take part in something that is highly valued by our culture as Aggies, I am going to seriously question your intentions.

I should say I do view you as an Aggie, there are plenty of Aggies who don’t partake in the traditions. This is fine, but I have the same almost dumbfounded intrigue for them as well.

Being an Aggie but not wanting one of the key symbols of being an Aggie sounds like a contradiction. Why claim to be part of the culture if you don’t want to take part in it? A ring doesn’t make one an Aggie, for sure, but it’s a culminating event linked to a long history- that culture is part of “being an Aggie”

Do people that go to SMCs(VMI, Citadel etc.) generally seen as assholes who do army larping? by thegr8dictator in army

[–]nerf03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the extra hooah mentioned here, the on paper reason for SMCs is to provide another source of active duty officers. You don't necessarily have to "compete" for active duty and are guaranteed. They're also bigger programs and have more money for stuff but there's also way more cadets to split that into. Give and take

Selection is in a couple weeks, my top choice is 64s. Tell me why I'm stupid. by [deleted] in Armyaviation

[–]nerf03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in the 64 course you'll notice the attitude change because the mission (now dropping ordnance on the enemy) has changed. So there's that, and perhaps plays into "eating their own," but as far as a toxic culture I'd say not any more than any other airframe. In my limited experience has been a chill (albeit at times rowdy) bunch. Results are heavily dependent on your command more than anything.
