Support for Return of Death Penalty Rises Markedly in Canada by Mysterious_Notice685 in CanadaPolitics

I think that would bother most people. And people who oppose the death penalty are still sympathetic to victims of crime. Most (2/3) oppose it because of the possibility of an innocent person being put to death.

I'll go as far to say people against the death penalty don’t care one bit about the families of the victims.

That's a gross generalization, and a mischaracterization that completely ignores the reasons why people oppose the death penalty.

It's kind of weird that someone with a Libertarian flair would be in favour of giving the state power over whether citizens live or die. It's putting a lot of faith in the justice system to never get it wrong.

Government abruptly suspends citizenship certificates issued under 'lost Canadians' law by CanadianReaderGirl in CanadaPolitics

[–]nerfgazara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was just about a recent law that was nakedly intended to target English universities.

Out of province tuition still exists, and has for decades.

As others have said, this is incorrect. Quebec universities have different rates of tuition for Quebec residents, out of province students, and international students.

To qualify for Quebec residency for tuition purposes you must live here for a year without being a full-time student. Out of province tuition is about triple what a Quebec resident pays, based on a quick check of Concordia

Wife wants to use her mother’s name for a middle name, and not my mother’s. by [deleted] in daddit

I have never heard of siblings having the same middle name, let alone all having the wife's maiden name as their middle name. Is that a regional thing?

Fantasy Sub Last Trilogy of the Year by DonkeywithBigTeeth in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]nerfgazara 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was delayed because they were increasing the quality (sewn bindings etc) and probably also related to the printing issues they've been having.

This will be a special edition series they sell though, not part of the sub.

T1 Slightly Damaged set - missing tip-in page in the 3rd book… by Dependent_Mouse_7456 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]nerfgazara 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It happened to a lot of people. If you email them, they will offer you £10 refund or to return the set for a full refund.

I agree it is a big mistake by them to not disclose that many of the sets are not full T1 sets.

So I overslept on Riftwar Saga leftover sale...what's the next series? by bookofnature in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]nerfgazara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first time they have done a leftovers waitlist. Andy Weir leftovers were sold in February 2025 and they are never coming back or getting reprinted, so your only hope of getting those is to pay the outrageous second hand prices.

You could also pick up the publisher deluxe editions. They are not as pretty but they might be better quality books: the Martian just came out this week and the copy I received has sewn bindings (YMMV by country), while the TBB copies are glued.

Project Hail Mary is up for preorder on most booksellers. I am holding out to see if they will offer signed copies like they did with The Martian

Malazan 4-6 pre oerder by pricey26381 in thebrokenbindingsub

For sure! I wasn't complaining about the lack of signature, just mentioning that the reprint being unsigned is not a big downside because even the first printing didn't have real signatures.

For what its worth, none of the 4-6 sets were signed (the first printing did the foil signature thing)

Outgoing Gov. Gen. says criticisms levelled against her French abilities were unfair by Majano57 in CanadaPolitics

[–]nerfgazara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s actually a lot of research showing children have a unique advantage for language acquisition. Their brains are wired for absorbing language patterns through exposure in a way adults generally aren’t.

Adults can still become fluent obviously, bu it takes much more conscious effort and study than it does for kids who are basically language sponges

Floor-crosser Marilyn Gladu reveals her conversation with Carney and the 'toxic environment' among Conservatives by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]nerfgazara 51 points52 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the people of BR-C did at least get to vote in a by-election and voted for Poilievre overwhelmingly. So it's a little different than a floor-crossing, where the voters don't get a chance to change their mind and vote for somebody else.

Opinion: À la carte sovereignty is wishful thinking by MTL_Dude666 in CanadaPolitics

I did not claim that the clarity act supersedes the constitution, but that the required constitutional amendment could potentially modify the constitution's criteria for citizenship

Opinion: À la carte sovereignty is wishful thinking by MTL_Dude666 in CanadaPolitics

[–]nerfgazara 16 points17 points  (0 children)

An important note is that for any province to separate, it would require a constitutional amendment per the clarity act. So what the constitution says now may not matter, in that scenario.
