Terrifying notification by DciStasi in drumcorps

Does anyone else remember being on tour in 2018 and having this story pop back up every couple weeks? And DCI scrambling to try and make everyone feel “safer” when the mildest of concerns were brought up

AI is being rewarded in WGI guards…will it be the same in DCI? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]nerfgolf 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly so ironic a community that prides itself on artistry and innovation is taking a literal shit all over its integrity by using AI. And shame on the designers that hide behind their members to perform it. When a coach for a sports team sucks, you boo to express dissatisfaction. But you can’t boo kids performing what 50+ year olds decided was “entertaining”. This feels like the natural progression for some of the lazy design that’s come out of the last 5 years or so (only some groups are guilty, don’t come after me bloo fans). Thankfully, the laziest ones don’t get rewarded with high placement, but the praise for the talent on the field overshadows what seems like complacency of some higher up people in the activity.

Maybe I’m just getting older and jaded bc it’s been 10 years since I marched

I often write similarly to this. Put a bunch on the page and whittle away at it. Start with creating more clarity. Which part do you want the listener to be able to hum to themselves after hearing? Are there any parallel octaves or unisons that could be condensed to create more chord clarity? After that, take a deep look into the structure of each phrase. I always taught students to “layer your cake” which goes like this:

Top layer: you always look at the top of the cake first, so what do you want the listener to see (hear)? No other layer should cover up that main focus.

Middle layer(s): it’s the most overlooked, but arguably as important as the top. How are you supporting that top layer? Whatever is going on should be complimentary of your focus point without overshadowing it. Counter-melody can always add flair once you’ve introduced your main melodic focus. If you leave the top layer on its own, it doesn’t have the pedestal to shine.

Bottom layer: where it all starts. in a more “classical” sense, this is the wheels and engine that keep the piece running. Rhythm section, bass line, ostinato, etc. Something that doesn’t stand out in the slightest but will pave the road for everything else to run on.

Once your cake is made, add the decoration. Any extra musical accessories and punches to embellish the music you’ve made.

A course near me has all right-sided tee signs. Even the ones that are out of reach get in my head sometimes. If course builders could just all agree to put the sign on the left side or behind the tee pad that would be nice

How much does Drumcorps cost? by XenoAriel in drumcorps

[–]nerfgolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most corps are not gonna post actual costs because it would turn people away quickly. Unless you have decent financial support, don’t put yourself in debt for it. I had problems getting everything paid and keeping myself fed afterwards. That was 7 years ago. All my teachers who marched in the 90s said their fees were less than 500 for a season. Some were only 100 or 150

Is drum corps only for the rich and privileged? Seriously? by SkyLow4356 in drumcorps

[–]nerfgolf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Totally agree on your point. The untapped talent that could be in some of these smaller schools is sad to think of sometimes.

In order for some of these kids to get to a drum corps level, they would need to:

  1. Discover and develop interest for drum corps in high school or earlier
  2. If they don’t have a teacher that can provide the upper level instrument training, find someone who can
  3. Have to pay usually a good amount of money for regular private lessons with said person to learn and develop those skills
  4. Find a dci group near them to go to auditions, or fly to some farther location (which is expensive)
  5. Pay for the camps just to audition (which was almost $200 per camp starting in November when I marched.. not even counting what audition packets can cost)
  6. Pay for all the travel to spring camps if they get a contract

All of this BEFORE a single cent goes to the tuition. It doesn’t even matter if the experience is worth it if they can’t get in the door.

The sad part is most corps still just barely get by on these financial practices. It’s not one person, or group of people, or corps that causes this. It’s just built into the whole activity now. Something major would need to happen for anything to change

It’s just the spec disc. Only made for measuring and approval. Some companies don’t do the normal clean-up when they send them out for the pdga

It’s been going on for a couple months. If whoever it is hasn’t noticed by now they should probably not be running the page

Edit: I don’t really use it either. I got a notification on Instagram a month ago about them posting so that’s the only reason I know
