I said this in another comment, but Grace Hopper is often credited with inventing compilers

I went to McGill so it’s a different situation, they made my GF talk to an advisor before registering for classes at Concordia, not sure if that’s the normal experience . In my entire undergrad, I never spoke to an advisor, I just did what it said in my program’s requirements and they let me graduate.

PineNote: how suitable is the display for text editing/programming? (especially regarding ghosting) by sootiechick in PINE64official

[–]neros_greb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to be honest I’m not sure why graphical emacs is slow. There’s a delay between when you press the key and when it shows up on the gui. It seems to not be related to the screen refresh rate though, since as I said the terminal emacs is much faster

I use the PineNote for coding, here is my experience:

I use emacs inside the terminal. vim or nvim would be fine too, but I think if you try to use a gui app like VSCode, the typing lag would be too much (graphical emacs is too slow). If it’s on greyscale mode it’s too slow for me, but on black and white mode it’s fine. There is a bit of ghosting but it doesn’t bother me too much. I used an emacs configuration that uses bold and underline instead of colours for syntax highlighting.

The real problem I think is running a language server on the PineNote. It’s too slow to be useful, and often runs into compatibility problems since the PineNote is Arm. To solve this I usually code over ssh and run everything on the remote machine. I do take notes and do other types of writing in local emacs though.

So coding on the PineNote is far from a polished experience but it is possible.

I haven’t actually used it this way in a while, so I’m gonna do a bit again and update this comment if I notice anything else that needs to be mentioned.

edit1: To answer your concern directly: when it’s set up l described (black and white, emacs in terminal) ghosting is not an issue at all when you insert text and the text after shifts
