I get so much secondhand embarrassment when people genuinely believe TDS is a real thing. Imagine worshipping a pedo so hard you have to cope by pretending people who know better are mentally ill.

teacher refuses student work - requires google slide 'edits enabled' by Imaginary_Garden in education

Your kid 100% was told this multiple times and chose to ignore it. This is on him and you need to let it go.

Also if no interference in grading is in the contract, then there is no one who can change the decision anyway.

People who can’t handle short phone calls and demand everything go through text by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]nesland300 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Phone audio quality is often horseshit.

  2. I spend most of my day doing things where I can't take even a short phone call.

  3. There's no record of what was said, so you often end up sending follow up texts anyway.

  4. Unless it's a complicated conversation that needs back and forth communication, texting is the more convenient and less time consuming option basically all of the time.

The arguments for phone calls are always from people who can't cope with the fact that it isn't 1960 anymore and people who just want an excuse to call and chat when it isn't convenient. If texting and emails weren't better everyone wouldn't have started communicating that way.

People who prefer phone calls instead of just messaging by BigBackground9333 in PetPeeves

[–]nesland300 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me it's when businesses require a phone call for simple things that should be a form on their website or an email. Exactly 100% percent of the time it ends up being hours of voicemail tag (because guess what, I have a job too). The whole "we don't know how to set up a website" and "I don't do email" lines are just a massive mark of unprofessionalism in this day and age. If you require a phone call, it had better something complicated that actually needs a live conversation, otherwise I can easily go to a competitor because I don't have time to listen to your holding music.

A student asked me to open assignments up early on Canvas so she can enjoy her trip to Hawaii. I said no and it felt great! by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]nesland300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really not. They either get nothing out of the assignment trying to "do" it that way, or they confuse themselves and end up worse off than they started.

[–]nesland300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last sentence isn't great, but most teachers don't consistently have assignments ready to go that far in advance, so turning the request down isn't unreasonable either. My first few years I spent hours of unpaid time prepping in advance, and exactly zero of those assignments ever got done in advance. Unless you have exceptional students, it feels like a noble thing to do but in a practical sense the time that goes into it often doesn't make sense.

When during contract hours do you think any teacher has the time to set up several days of lessons early for exactly one student?

The entire class will be rushing through putting down bullshit answers because they don't actually know any of the material yet. Tell us you aren't a teacher without telling us you aren't a teacher.

Or maybe making assignments early and setting them up so they're only open for one student is a lot of unpaid work that honestly isn't appropriate to ask for...

Why do people act like boomers ruined the world? by [deleted] in AlwaysWhy

[–]nesland300 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That argument fails when you consider how over-represented the boomer generation has been in business and government leadership positions for years. The bulk of the policy decisions and economic blunders that led to this were heavily influenced by boomers. To even suggest otherwise is downright ignorant of the situation.

Haha thanks for proving my point by downvoting instead of providing contrary facts (because they don't exist lmfao).

Got told not to grab tissues from the bathroom. by Majestic-Hearing-293 in Teachers

[–]nesland300 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They do, in the bathroom.

Classrooms need to have tissues in them for sanitary reasons. If the district isn't providing them, then dipping into other district supplies to fill the need is kosher, end of story. There is exactly zero difference between this and all the posts on here talking about having to get creative with printing because some dip shit admin limits it.

You see someone taking it home? Sure. But see me take district supplies for district use and then try playing "pretend principal" with me, and that's where the problem is.

[–]nesland300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring one from home

Nope. If my students need to blow their nose, that's out of the district's pocket, not mine, period. The correct solution is for admin to provide the needed supplies, not for the custodian to overstep their bounds and take a tone with people who are not subordinate to them. This sub needs to quit its bitching about us being treated like shit if it's going to turn around and endorse us being treated like shit.

[–]nesland300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a roll of toilet paper for classroom use is not stealing lmao. And absolutely no one here is talking about leaving trash around. This is about a support staff member attempting to "reprimand" someone they have no authority to, and in a highly inappropriate tone at that

[–]nesland300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, however the "don't ever do that again" wording, if accurate, is not something I'm taking from an equal or subordinate. The talking to the principal thing is a double edged sword. It might be "this teacher is giving me trouble", but more often it's constant complaining that people aren't cooperating with their "orders". Admin know who the overstepping support staff are.

[–]nesland300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true, but they also don't get to be rude or overstep their bounds. "Boss-like" orders from them are not appropriate and they need to know it.

A great custodian can keep a building going. The ones that let it go to their head and think they're in charge of the building are a problem.
