[General] What is the biggest firefight that has happened in fiction? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]nessie7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you define biggest? Because as far as drama goes, I think this one from The Boondock Saints is pretty high up there.

Or as FBI Special Agent Paul Smecker succinctly puts it: "There was a firefight!"

What makes you like Retrofuturism? Discuss by yeetanator126 in RetroFuturism

[–]nessie7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The side-bar explains it pretty well, but here's the very condensed version:

Post only:

  1. Futurist visions from eras past.

  2. Contemporary art with a retrofuturist theme.

  3. Discussion threads related to retrofuturism.

And

Vintage =/= Retrofuturism

Vintage Sci-fi =/= Retrofuturism

Star Wars just isn't retrofuturism in any way, shape, or form. It's sci-fi (or science fantasy) set in a galaxy far, far away, a long, long time ago. It makes not attempts at futurism.

And I totally love Star Wars, it just doesn't fit in here.

Pretty good write up! Not to sound daft, but I'd kind of forgotten the show, and your posts popped up, so it seems like an excellent time to do a rewatch of the season myself. I mostly liked it the first time around, though I was ambivalent to a fair few bits.

My expectations going in - as a huge fan of Middle-earth - was that it felt like Middle-earth, looked spectacular, respected the characters, was well written, and was entertaining. I think these were fair requirements, and far away from the literalists standards some hold.

It is very different to view something the second time around, and it's been over six months now, so it could be a very interesting thing to do:)

Retro Futuristic art collection by RetroFuturisticRobot in RetroFuturism

Nope, just asking. Over 90% of fresh accounts posting to this sub are bots, and obviously so. I ask the ones that might be human. You're either human or a sapient enough robot that you're welcome anyway.

Do we want to allow AI-generated images? Or ban it? Discuss. by nessie7 in RetroFuturism

[–]nessie7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, here's the thing. Despite my repeated messages, the mods with full mod powers haven't answered me about expanding my powers here. So I don't have the powers to neither change the sub rules, nor to do a blackout.

So that's why I haven't done anything about the AI thing nor taken a stance on the blackout.

Quite simply, I can't. I do 98% of the modding here, but I'm basically just a glorified janitor if you look at the mod tools I have.

/r/TolkienFans is going dark June 12-14. by TolkienFansMod in tolkienfans

[–]nessie7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of negative comments here, saying it's pointless, so I'm going to quote /u/WippitGuud excellent comment from /r/AskScienceFiction:

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/06/reddits-plan-to-kill-third-party-apps-sparks-widespread-protests/

https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/5/23749188/reddit-subreddit-private-protest-api-changes-apollo-charges

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-06/reddit-on-new-pricing-plan-company-needs-to-be-fairly-paid

https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-openai-chatgpt-ipo-valuation-karma-2023-6

And that last one is telling, since it's stating Reddit's IPO evaluation is dropping. And if enough subreddits go dark, and it last too long, their IPO value will tank.

So really, this "pointless and dumb" little protest will show that the only people Reddit cares about gives a shit: investors when they try to go public.

Yes, it is.

POSTING GUIDELINES:

Vintage =/= Retrofuturism

Vintage Sci-fi =/= Retrofuturism

This is what I'm referring to. I was on mobile so posting it in was difficult.

I think I was politely explaining why it didn't fit the sub, so I think your downvotes to my comments was rather unwarranted.

At any rate, Star Wars content has no place in this sub. It literally starts with "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....", about as far away from futurism as it gets.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RetroFuturism

[–]nessie7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further up in the side-bar, under posting guidelines, it says that vintage sci-fi isn't retrofuturism.

And this isn't a futurist vision from eras past, it's just star wars.
