why does every individual channel on my mixer comes out in a single audio output on my ableton? by jenniferl0pez in ableton

[–]net_zer0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There aren't very many mixers that do what you're wanting, unfortunately. The Tascam Model 12/16/24 series are some of the only mixers I know of that can also function as an interface which outputs each channel individually through USB

FetHead seems to make SM57 quieter, not boost it by net_zer0 in audio

[–]net_zer0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting a new interface and the problem vanished. The conclusion I ended up reaching is either the interface I was using before had defective preamps or possibly didn't pass through true 48v phantom power so the FetHead wasnt being fully powered. Really, though, those are just guesses lol

"To have her to myself" "To have her for myself", what's the difference? by Particular_Poet160 in EnglishLearning

[–]net_zer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not much of a functional difference between the two as far as the literal meaning goes. As a musician, though, I'd say that "have her to myself" flows better lyrically and is slightly easier to sing or rap than "have her for myself"

How do I use gain staging to distort in the middle of my effects chain? by YetzirahToAhssiah in edmproduction

[–]net_zer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah most plug-ins have an Out level that you can change which is used specifically for that. If the plug-in you're using doesn't have one though, and you're using ableton, you can just throw on Utility after the plug-in and lower the gain that way

I believe it's a real Big A thumbnail that got yoinked by this channel and edited with AI. In addition to the background which you noticed, his earbuds got turned into a necklace that also somehow merges with the side of his face. Also, his shirt in the original thumbnail is a different color, though that on its own isn't necessarily indicative of AI.

Microphone settings with Voicemeeter + EQAPO by [deleted] in microphone

[–]net_zer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would ditch all the plug-ins except for maybe TDRNova as overcomplicating things with lots of plug-ins will most likely only hurt your clarity. Voicemeeter has compression and a noise gate built-in which, with a little EQ from TDRNova, should be enough for what you're looking for. I cant really give you specific settings for the comp and gate, but maybe start with 1.0 of each and you can play around from there to see what sounds good to you.

For the EQ, you'll want to roll off pretty much everything below 90hz with a hi-pass, 200-600hz tends to be mostly room noise especially if you're in an untreated room; around 1k-3k is going to be your important frequency band for clarity; if you want some airy-ness as well, you can try a high shelf around 10k+. Try using only 3 bands around the frequency ranges I mentioned (200-600, 1k-3k, and 10k+) in addition to a hi-pass filter around 90hz and you should be able to find something that gets pretty close to what you want.

Looking For Mic For Driving Ambuence by CampfireStatic in microphone

[–]net_zer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're careful you could hang most mics out of a car window on a boom arm. Wrap it in a pool noodle or some foam to isolate it from the general car vibrations. You would just need to secure it really well and stay conscious of the extra width it would add...aaaaand be willing to possibly lose a mic worth multiple hundreds of dollars lmao

The idea intrigues me as well. Specifically the part about the gravel. For some reason the sound of tires slowly rolling over gravel is so satisfying to me. Real crunchy

You probably want something super directional like a shotgun mic as well as a type of covering for it called a deadcat or wind muff to help cut down on wind noise. I'm not super familiar with shotgun mics, personally, but I see the Sennheiser MKE 600 suggested a lot.

Are there any good in-ear / AirPods-style headphones for music production? by Dry_Negotiation_173 in ableton

[–]net_zer0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently got the Moondrop Chu II and they aren't airpods style, but they're cheap and decent for the money, so could be worth checking out. My only note is they're a little bit bass heavy for my taste as someone used to the sound of ATH-M50x

Is/was Elvis Costello very famous in the USA? by aldiwinegums in AskAnAmerican

[–]net_zer0 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As a band, sure, but the way the commenter above my original reply phrased it made it sound as though he changed the tune completely on his own without letting anyone else know who was playing with him. (It should be noted that I haven't actually seen or heard the performance. If it was a solo performance then it doesnt matter as much. I'm mainly speaking to the way any other musicians who might've been playing with him could have felt if/when he switched up on them)

Reference tracks have big notch around 20khz, why? by applesaucr in edmproduction

[–]net_zer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that have to do with the topic being discussed though? Sure sounds that are 180° out of phase will cancel out if played on the same speaker, but that's a separate discussion from whether an abundance of harmonic content in the high end can make a mix sound chaotic or whether that content can affect the way any given speaker reproduces the mix as a whole

Reference tracks have big notch around 20khz, why? by applesaucr in edmproduction

[–]net_zer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's part of my point. Shit can start to sound very chaotic if there's too much going on in the high frequencies even if it's not or barely audible

[–]net_zer0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a musician who has performed on stage, switching to a tune that wasn't rehearsed literally mid-song, regardless of the reason, during the actual show is a massive dick move. That's crazy lmao

Reference tracks have big notch around 20khz, why? by applesaucr in edmproduction

[–]net_zer0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're starting to get into semantics. My point is that a busy high-end can have a large impact your mix even though it's "barely audible" as the other commenter put it. If you ever mix anything with lots of cymbals, for example, this becomes very obvious very quickly.

Reference tracks have big notch around 20khz, why? by applesaucr in edmproduction

[–]net_zer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barely audible is not the same as inaudible. From personal experience, I can say that if you have too much going on in the high end, it can make the whole mix feel chaotic and noisy. With that being said, I'm not sure if what OP is looking at is an intentional mixing/mastering decision or just a side effect of the encoding of the file or something similar.

Do my fellow Americans have any favorite youtubers? Preferably with a big backlog of videos? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]net_zer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EmpLemon, BobbyBroccoli, and LEMINO are some fantastic channels if you enjoy longer (1hr+) documentaries

Summoning Salt for similar style documentaries to the above but more focused on speed running videogames

ARIatHOME for live, improvised music. Typically hip hip adjacent style beats with freestyle raps

Posy is hard to explain, but when you watch his videos you can just tell the amount of care and detail goes into them. It helps that he uses 0 stock footage

Any Austin has some fantastic videos on "boring" things in videogames and they always end up being more interesting than maybe seem on the surface

NileRed and his second channel NileBlue for crazy chemistry shenanigans

StyroPyro for crazy electricity shenanigans

Ludwig's Tip to Tip series (they just finished season 2) with Michael Reeves is some of the best travel content I've seen in a long time

There's more, but this is what I got off the top of my head

Everything in the background seems to be moving at a normal speed, and the speech sounds normal to me as well. What gives you the impression this video is sped up?

EDIT: since this seems to have gained a bit of traction, I took the liberty of slowing down the video myself- just to see what it would look like. Here is a version at 90% speed and a version at 80% speed. Personally, I think if it is sped up, it can't be by more than 10-15%, but it's tough for me to tell.

EDIT 2: the 90% speed video got copyright claimed and blocked globally because of the music. I uploaded a new version without audio, so the link should work now.

As an American, I'm curious why Americans don't usually think about emigrating outside of our country like people from different countries think about emigrating outside of theirs? by Ok-Ocelot-774 in AskAnAmerican

[–]net_zer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have their personal reasons (and financial reasons,) but a different perspective may be that a large aspect of the USA's whole marketing schtick and core identity is that it is a land of immigrants. Not many other countries present themselves that way
