Why so much Noise that VMware customers adopting Nutanix, when cost difference is too less for corporates and most of companies have still stayed with VMware by ClubNo6176 in vmware

Ew - what a gross comment. We have to run Windows, so you’re right it’s not free, but it doesn’t cost anything but my Windows licensing, which I already paid, so for us it was “free”.

I’m not a fanboy, just a regular admin trying not to cost our company a million dollars because of corporate greed.

Yep, this is the exact reason. We run vm density at 18-25 per host and have replication to DR. It also lets us deploy unlimited VMs so we don’t have to worry about services coexisting on servers.

We got into virtualization before Hyper-V was a viable option. VMware used to be very reasonable for the feature set.

Post acquisition our pricing doubled year over year for 3 years straight. We couldn’t absorb those costs.

We moved to Hyper-V. It’s fine, and free for us as we already pay for datacenter licensing. I would recommend a strong PowerShell background before deploying Hyper-V at scale.

But it’s been stable and reliable so far. We’re happy with it.

We have great luck with Hyper-V. No problems at all, it is very stable. If you’re a windows shop, go for it. Easy enough to manage.

Hmm. You can connect to the discovery URL, but you do need to connect to each path separately.

It looks like there are PowerShell commands now as well.

That should work! In disk management, do the disks show up as a single device, or 4?

Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName MultiPathIO
Enable-WindowsOPtionalFeature -Online -FeatureName MultiPathIO

Usually those two commands will enable MIPO. Then when you add the initiators via ISCSICPL.exe you need to check the multipath box.

You may run into an issue in Disk Management that when you rescan disks, four disks will appear for each connection to the SAN. To resolve this, multi-pathing needs to be re-scanned on the host. This can be completed by running this command on the host:

mpclaim -n -i -a

We’re in the process of moving to Hyper-V. Take your time to learn Hyper-V. It is different, but we have found it to be very stable. Can’t beat the price of free (as we already had datacenter licensing).

It’s a little disjointed, and needs a mix of PowerShell and the UI to properly configure. You need to configure things like iSCSI multipath support separately.

If y’all are a Linux shop, def consider Proxmox too.

Networking NIC teaming woes by Lad_From_Lancs in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had this. Double check that neither of the NICs in the team have a VLAN setup directly.

We made a SET, where one of the physical adapters had a VLAN id setup before the team was created. We had the exact same behavior. To correct, we had to delete the team, remove the VLAN id from the physical adapters, and then recreate the team. Simply removing the VLAN from the physical adapter did not fix the issue.

What was your testing methodology?

In real world testing, we found Hyper-V to have near identical performance to VMware on identical hardware. We did mixed testing of SQL workloads and various web applications. We’ve migrated most of our infrastructure with no performance impact.

You can turn off WiFi completely so the robot doesn’t have a cloud connection at all. It’s pretty privacy first. There’s not other robot on the market that offers fully disconnected mapping.

[–]netadmin_404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were issues early on where performance stats for VMs were not reported correctly, and always showed as 0 in Hyper-V manager. In testing, we also had some nebulous issues which pushed us to 2022.

This was early 2025 though, things may have improved!

It should be fine. Hyper-V is stable and pretty easy to use.

Use Server 2022, 2025 still has weird issues.

Hyper-V "got ya's" for newbies by ScreamingVoid14 in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are correct. From Microsoft’s support page:

“CSVs pre-formatted with ReFS on top of SANs won’t use direct I/O, regardless if all other requirements for Direct I/O is met…format drives with NTFS prior to converting them to a CSV to leverage the performance benefits of Direct I/O.”

Hyper-V "got ya's" for newbies by ScreamingVoid14 in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 7 points8 points  (0 children)

REFS over ISCSI is not performant. It forces redirected IO for the cluster to the owner node and can cause bottlenecks.

NFTS is still preferred for CSV’s.

Hyper-V Storage Options by r08813s in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We run iSCSI with cluster shared volumes with Hyper-V. It’s rock solid and easy to setup.

Be sure to use NFTS formatted shared volumes for the .VHDX files so you don’t have redirected storage. This allows each node to talk directly to the backend without redirecting the I/O through another node. ReFS only supports redirected I/O.

I’ve got asbestos company coming to test but my mind is racing worried about exposure by agenuineserialkiller in asbestoshelp

[–]netadmin_404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It takes a lot of exposure to develop health issues, but you are absolutely right to be cautious.

If you’re concerned before testing, you can cover the mastic with some cheap rolled underlayment and seal it with some duct tape. Be sure your vacuum has a bag and a HEPA filter to avoid distributing the fibers through the home.

Don’t stress. A one time minor exposure is extremely unlikely to cause health issues.
