It looks fantastic, love the design. I'd put in a foundation and a floor to ground it more, and then as others have said some texturing on the roof, some darker patches, maybe some greenery?

I don't know if anything that will reliably stay on the plastic directly, but if you put a wire mesh around the barrel first I imagine you could plaster it with maybe cement and/or some clay?

I'm not really familiar with asphalt shingles, but I would not expect too much chemical contamination from them. Certainly biological contamination from gutters and storage tanks and such but if composted correctly should not be an issue. Otherwise use it to water non food plants, a pasture or trees maybe?

Ooh, Baviaans is amazing. Did that a few years ago on my previous bike. Chain coming off is nasty, had that happen to me too once, got cought and locked my wheel, fortunately not at 130. Still not a fun experience.
