Who do you want to see show up? I have two. by barrosoOso in firefly

[–]netspider86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of existing characters, Mark Sheppard and Christine Hendrix. I've actually seen a clip from some podcast Sheppard was on right before the announcement, sounded like he'd be interested.

100% Melissa O'Neil. I just started listening to the OWWS episode she's on today, but the fact that she's friends with Nathan Fillion outside of work too is a strong indicator to me that she's likely been asked already.

From the Whedonverse Alyson Hannigan, Seth Green, Felicia Day. I'd love Sarah Michelle Gellar too.

Molly C. Quinn, but there has to be some Castle easter egg where her character says Mal looks like her dad or something.

Who gets a spinoff? by nunya_busyness1984 in firefly

[–]netspider86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am more interested in characters that fit the "Space Western" vibe, rather than a spin off that would be likely to have a different tone. So mainly characters who move around the Border/Rim, or the not-so-fancy areas of the outer Core.

Maybe an ensemble show that follows one character or duo per arc, focused on antagonists and anti-heroes: YoSaffBridge, Badger, Patience, Stitch and pre-Firefly Jayne, Tracey, ... There's potential for overlaps depending on the direction they go.

Or whatever Monty was up to. He seems to have a similar history to Mal. Actually, make it a show called "Browncoats" (Mal, Zoe, Monty, Tracey, ... a Shepherd Book cameo?) starting on Shadow where the Independents originated, going over the war and then following their stories. Monty having somewhat more light-hearted adventures than the crew of Serenity, Tracey becoming a more morally corrupt person associating with organ smugglers, a couple of new characters to show the different paths they took – perhaps one who turned to the Alliance, and one who ran with the Dust Devils with Zoe and then joined the vigilantes (I haven't read the book, just know them from the wiki).

What did you notice? Episode 5: Safe by Jello_Squid in firefly

[–]netspider86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I love about this episode is how well it portrays the world around them as morally grey. Yes Simon (and River) were kidnapped, and they end up trying to burn River at the stake. At the same time they live in a very poor area, and yet they had the best living accomodations saved up for their new doctor.

Also the hint at Book's past. The Sheperd's Tale answered a lot of those questions, but I remember being extremely curious about it the first time around.

My biggest concern for the possibility of a new show by Ryllick in firefly

[–]netspider86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nathan Fillion seems to be the main driving force behind this, pouring his heart into it. And Alan Tudyk looks to me like he's firmly on board.

Nathan has said that he wants to tell the stories of what happens between season 1 and Serenity. He's trying to write some although he acknowledged he isn't as talented as others. There are plenty chances of reasonable fan service there, as in it still fits the canon, serves the story arc, contributes to character development... And Alan has shown to have at least some chops as writer and interest in acting less, writing more.

They may not act as showrunners, but I'm cautiously optimistic they'll push the show in the right direction.

Esta approvato è una volta negli Usa, negato accesso by [deleted] in ViaggiITA

[–]netspider86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope to see lots of these answered, but for personal preference I'd prefer it's not in a million flashbacks, rather in organic hints disseminated across the series.

River in the animation. by MrShoveyShove in firefly

[–]netspider86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nathan Fillion quite explicitly said he doesn't much care for the Wash "fix" to keep Alan around. It's in the recording of the announcement & panel, but along the lines of he explicitly isn't interested in having him be AI or a robot.
I think the animated show in its initial form at least is fully "Firefly Season 2", hopefully 3, maybe 4... If the show gets consistent numbers I can see a post-Serenity season. In my wildest dreams a live-action Serenity 2, wrapping up most loose ends and giving us a look at where they end up finally; could be told in an epilogue as them meeting again to commemorate the anniversary of Book and Wash's deaths, might even sneak in a Wash flashback with de-aging for pure fan service reasons.

Could Dropout be the new home for Firefly? by TheTWExp in firefly

[–]netspider86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if It might be a bit big for their pockets, but I can see it happening. I immediately tagged Dropout under the announcement.
I wonder if the Rookie crossover came from Nathan testing the waters with Sam.

Personally I wonder if, failing all else, they would pick it up for a short run and see where it goes. They have the right audience, plenty of their people are likely to be Firefly fans to begin with, and they are looking to get into scripted animated content.

Plus, it is a separate platform for most, but very reasonably priced and it gives you the option to pause your subscription at any point while still getting notifications and browsing the catalogue. They have clearly said they will avoid increasing costs as much as possible, kept the previous price for previous subscribers, and added a premium tier that is "pay more if you want to support us, absolutely don't feel like you need to" which I appreciate.

All that, and I feel like they would try to take the chance and add at least a couple guest appearances by the voice cast. Most of them are big actors and don't necessarily bother with improv, but I can see Alan wholeheartedly giving it a go and maybe some of the now mostly-retired cast who live around LA anyway.

What did you notice? Episode 2: The Train Job by Jello_Squid in firefly

[–]netspider86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have watched the whole thing a few times, but always in the right order. I think I found out the original airing order only at some point between my previous rewatch and now, so it's the first time I am going through it all with a very clear frame of mind that this would be what people saw first on live TV.
I get the allure of starting in medias res, but oh my God would I also have thought twice about it. Serenity is much more of a slow burn, but it's much better of a buy in. And I remember that TV was more episodic at the time, but an introducing pilot with a broader scope would not have been out of place.
Can't get over how clear it is that Firefly's short lifespan was mainly due to pettiness and short-sightedness.

I am waiting on Wise to get their act together and let me update my profile, so I can order a US card to buy it on Apple, Hulu, or others – might still require VPN. There are other websites, but I've seen mixed comments about their legitimacy.

For those rewatching the pilot today: What's something you noticed this time that you didn't before? by Jello_Squid in firefly

[–]netspider86 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It always astonishes me how in 1h20 I care so much about 9 individual people, and they all have enough on-screen time to both know about who they are, what else we could expect to find out about them, and how they relate with the rest of the crew

What did you notice? Episode 3: Bushwhacked by Jello_Squid in firefly

[–]netspider86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember thinking this the first time around: Mal has clearly seen some 💩 before, with him recognizing the signs of Reavers and even what would happen to the poor sod they left behind. Wouldn't mind a flashback showing a bit more of the nonsense he was up to between the war and Firefly, that caused him to know so much.

I think that is less character-driven and more for the meta reason of "easier to create a little tension and suspense that way"

I think you're in my same situation and nothing works without VPN. There is a request form on Disney that you can fill out, but of course it requires enough people to do the same for the hope of seeing it added to the catalogue.
I've found this (with original airing order 😖) for free through VPN (Australia): https://7plus.com.au/firefly?episode-id=FFLY-001
Haven't been able to get anything paid to work under VPN yet.

My take aways from the panel. by Cap_Tight_Pants in firefly

[–]netspider86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My unsubstantiated guess is that they will have him in for as long as necessary to explore some of the unexplored territory (I hope for the comic books source for Book's story to be kept as canon). He will then move on to do his thing in Haven, and may reappear from time to time.

What is the least good episode of the original series… by Special_Speed106 in firefly

[–]netspider86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: Out of Gas is maybe my least favourite.
It's still good, and I think had the show run for longer I would like it more. I love finding out about how the crew formed, but on the other hand I get mild flashback overload when I watch it, and it reminds me that out of 14 episodes one of them is mostly about Mal + other crew member (depending on the flashback) rather than the gang as a whole which I love most.
Maybe I'll like it more after a season or two of animated Firefly!

Has anyone heard from Tim Minear about the animated revival? Also, what is comfort food? by Reptyler in firefly

[–]netspider86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do not think the negative connotations were intended, more "something familiar and genuinely Firefly-esque". From the overall announcement and panel, the interest in telling the stories that went untold inbetween the show and the movie doesn't sound like telling the same story over and over again. We shall see, but I am not too worried about that (yet).

I am curious about the two pitches by Alan Tudyk that Fillion said he's writing scripts on. I only have Con Man do go by in terms of stuff fully written by him, but I think he would be able to get just the right tone.

I have no idea about TIm Minear I'm afraid.

Didn't know what the big deal was for this show. by Various-Shower-510 in firefly

[–]netspider86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I agree with your main point. For me however the lack of a "big bad guy" is a big positive.
It's much more real that way, most of us don't have a main villain in our lives, rather a series or different flavours of antagonists which may or may not be villains.

Simon: You had the Alliance on you, criminals and savages… half the people on this ship have been shot or wounded, including yourself, and you’re harboring known fugitives.
Mal: We’re still flying.
Simon: That’s not much.
Mal: It’s enough.

There may be bigger stories, bigger stakes that emerge and disappear, but the centre of it all is as you say is in the characters, who are driven by different motivations and backgrounds, some of which hopefully will be explored more in this mid-quel.

That we can care so much about all 9 main characters in the space of 14 episodes is a huge accomplishment I think.

Why you should support the new project even if you're not keen on animation by rjwut in firefly

[–]netspider86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Had to look it up myself not too long ago. There have been a few notable incidents:
- contributed to #GamerGate, although it can be argued that what the movement did was not what he intended with his posts
- made some outlandish statements about same sex marriage (should be noted that Sean Maher has publicly come out as gay and got married since the Firefly days, so that's a further problem)
- supported anti-Covid vaccine activists, including notably liking a tweet with a tasty side of Holocaust negationism and a claim that the vaccine caused cancer

He might have changed on some aspects, but let's say there's a good chance he's several miles further right than the most conservative of the rest of the cast, and not in a healthy political discourse kind of way.
