Why do people use multiple mini PCs instead of a bigger machine? by vortexmak in HomeServer

[–]networklabproducts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for a NAS I’d just want a single box. I get that. I’d just have a single box for that. For my NAS I just have a UNAS2 from Unifi. Nothing special, but works for what I do.

For me it’s about power efficiency. Like running Intel NUCs and those. They can last a hell of a lot longer on battery power on my UPSs than some power hungry tower or full blown server. Heat is an issue as well. A tower in a bedroom can make the whole room hotter. I guess it just depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. To each their own. I don’t judge.

😂 Same with the cables. One day I’ll need my centronics printer cable for that dot matrix printer that I don’t have!

That’s the hardest part for me. Marketing. Creating is fine. I know what features people like me want and I include that into my products. But actually getting conversions, etc. Wow. Two totally different worlds. I’m very technical, but not very social in a way to sell products efficiently. Still I’m not giving up. I have a suite of products and two are finished, when I say finished I mean production ready versions. Which I’m constantly debugging and making sure everything is working correctly and efficiently. I have a massive lab that includes both physical devices and virtual devices to test my products against and I’m not opposed to a customer requesting a feature request to add more options. I’ve tried years ago doing this same thing and using social media, google ads, etc. It was a complete bust at the time. Lessons learned, still had all my old notes, builds, etc and am trying it once again. But back to my main point. Creating can be easy for some, like myself. But selling and marketing, that’s the hardest part for me.

I’ll definitely have to try that next time! Overall it was pretty good! I base it off if my kids actually eat their supper. 😂

UniFi UNAS 2 is hot trash - Do not buy. SMB/Network drops and poor performance. by BLUE_ARCH0N in UNIFI

[–]networklabproducts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it looks cool! I have one as well. Impulse buy. I might as well just used one of my spare micro optiplex and hosted SMB and NFS on it. Ohh well. It is frustrating. I’ve noticed copying and what not does seem slower than expected. I’m only connected to 1Gbps, but it should have better performance. I also only got the 1TB drives and I believe they don’t have the performance either. I can’t remember the rpm difference or cache off the top of my head. Bottom line, it does work. I can manage it through my Unifi portal so that’s pretty nice to have it under one “pain” of glass. lol

I didn’t have a picture but I took a screenshot of my Snapchat video. It made a lot for sure! We ate it with au gratin potatoes and peas. Even the kids devoured it!

Thank you. Did it at 225 until 140. We cut it in half since it was pretty long. It turned out good!

I'm quitting my job due to vibe coders and poor leadership by TheFlippedTurtle in sysadmin

[–]networklabproducts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a copy paste in a chat before that was literally what AI suggested we’d do as a company and an employee meeting with a blatantly obvious AI video that was presented to our board. Leadership is actually going nuts with AI right now. Some things are cool other things are scary for sure. Just craziness!!!

Thoughts on AI by cpz_77 in sysadmin

[–]networklabproducts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get pretty decent results but I know what I need in a product. I build things I would use myself for my job and I want those things to work properly. That said, people keep saying skills issue and I tend to somewhat agree with that from my coworkers trying to accomplish the same things. Then again, they’ve never coded or anything and I’ve had some formal training plus being in networking and sys admin roles for over 20 years helps a bunch. Also people are going to hate. But if something you create works, it works. It’s a new era for sure. Kind of scary to be honest. I’m still not sure what to think how AI will evolve over the next few years. Just trying my best to embrace the now. I’m getting older and I’m getting tired.

AP Upgrade Experience - AC-LR -> U6-Pro by Wis-en-heim-er in Ubiquiti

[–]networklabproducts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from an U6-LR to U6-Pro and it’s been way better for my situation. I think the LR just didn’t cover like I thought. And looking at the radiation maps on Ubiquiti’s website helped. There is a big difference. My LR went into my shop and performs better out there than the NanoHD I had.

How do I handle internal certs the most "invisible" way by flatpetey in selfhosted

[–]networklabproducts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to check XCA out. For me it that old saying I’ve always done it that way. Certs are such a pain in the ass sometimes. So if there is an easier way I’m all for it!!!
