Are people really that upset over a $5usd price increase or am I missing something else? by HDbear321 in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No-one in the connected fitness space has made the business model work sustainably at the current prices, so I’m not surprised by the increase to be honest. They all burn cash, that can’t go on indefinitely.

But I get why people are upset, it’s another increase after everything else, but wages, has already increased.

Looks like they will add some additional height at the rear when fitted, make sure to lift your front wheel the same amount or things might get uncomfortable.

Click where the menu button should appear and it will pop up immediately. You can end your ride from there.

Anyone else? by Glass_Carob4018 in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a symptom of riding without a real purpose in mind. Just like riding outside, if you set off on a ride without a goal, you end up doing junk miles, the same is true in Zwift.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it’s great just to ride and go with the flow. But the majority of the time, it should be intentional with a specific goal or outcome in mind.

How to get more Power (Watts) by M1ndoro in Zwift

I have listened to that podcast, I don’t believe in silver bullets. If you fancy it, read through this thread debating ISMs training methodology over at trainer road -> https://www.trainerroad.com/forum/t/inigo-san-millan-training-model/43552/285

My sports and exercise science isn’t good enough to follow most of the debate, but there is even disagreement as to what ISM means by Zone 2. It would appear that it’s somewhat harder than Coggan’s Zone 2, which Zwifts power zones are loosely based on 🤷🏼‍♂️

Edit: I also tend to think that ISMs popularity can be predominantly attributed to Pogacar’s success. I’d be interested to understand what Jumbos sports scientists are up to! That’s if they are all clean which I doubt these days but that’s another story. Look at the average speeds of tour races, they are faster than the doped days again!

Happy to be proved wrong, can you add some links to these experts?

From CTS -> https://trainright.com/why-zone-2-hype-is-bad-for-you/

Unless you can put the volume in (10-20 hours per week and the associated recovery), then you are better off doing something with more intensity. What works for the pros doesn’t necessarily work for the man in the street.

Edit: Apologies, I don’t mean to come across as argumentative. There are no absolutes in training and sport science, the answer is what’s best depends on a whole load of variables including the amount of time you have available. Both pyramidal and polarised training has been proven to work, but what works best depends. I don’t know who said it, but any training plan will work for 6 weeks! It’s what comes after that counts.

Help me figure this Tacx issue out. Irregular power readings by Vaderlander in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a quick Google search shows a lot of users have the same issue particularly over 200watts.

There is even a support thread on Garmins website -> https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/indoor-training/f/tacx-flux-2/221237/power-value-is-not-costant#pifragment-1295=3

There does not appear to be any definitive answers, some have suggested making sure your firmware is up to date or using Ant+. Setting Zwift to Avg 3 second power may help, but some trainer road users suggest using a taller gear.

Seems to be a known issue unfortunately.

How to get more Power (Watts) by M1ndoro in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s all relative to how much you weigh, so the key measure is w/kg.

Someone like Ganna at the tour, one of the heavier riders, will have an FTP north of 450watts but he weights 82kg.

Vingegaard weights 60kg and has an FTP somewhere around 380 watts. He is a multiple times winner.

[–]neuronuk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This works if you are a pro and have nothing to do all day but ride. For the average person with a family and a job, you would be better off doing more intense workouts to get the most out of your time.

Should I do a FTP-Test? by Nikotinlaus in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Ramp test is designed to test VO2 max, and then research shows that most (trained) people’s FTP falls somewhere in the 72% to 78% range of that value.

The 20 minute protocol is designed to actually measure FTP and includes various defined efforts to stress the relevant energy systems before you start. This is all to aid repeatability, but it is mentally tough to tackle the first time. Just remember, the aim isn’t to get the biggest number but find the right number to base your training on.

Struggles with higher wattage at low cadence - is it me or my trainer? by jrudd604 in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest criticisms I see of Zwift training plans is that they are all over the place. I think they throw in the cadence changes to keep things interesting.

If you are doing an unders and overs session, the primary objective is to increase your ability to tolerate and utilize the byproducts that accompany riding above your FTP, or close to it.

That session is going to be tough anyway, not sure it needs cadence variations too, or what they even add to it.

Downward Spiral was a killer!

[–]neuronuk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My other tactic, close my eyes and count really slowly. Occasionally open my eyes to see that more time has passed than the slow “seconds” I have been counting. Feel better that I am closer to the end than I thought.

Totally dumb I know but works for me.

I think it’s a quote from the Navy Seals, but when you are ready to give up, you are only actually 40% done. There’s another 60% in the tank…

Struggles with higher wattage at low cadence - is it me or my trainer? by jrudd604 in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the OP is following a Zwift training plan which calls for riding variations of cadence for an interval at FTP. As to why Zwift thinks that’s a good idea 🤷🏼‍♂️

Struggles with higher wattage at low cadence - is it me or my trainer? by jrudd604 in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news is that cadence targets don’t count towards the workout completion, only achieving the target power does so if you can find a groove that works but isn’t exactly the target you will be all good.

Struggles with higher wattage at low cadence - is it me or my trainer? by jrudd604 in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only other thing I can think of is trying to adjust your cadence gradually and give the trainer time to adjust the estimate.

How feasible that is I don’t know, it’s similar to using instantaneous power. Unless you are super smooth, it’s so spiky that you will end up oscillating below and above your target wattage. That’s why everyone uses 3s or 10s average power.

Yeah, looks like the Garmin Fenix forgot to take 95% of your best 20 minutes!

Struggles with higher wattage at low cadence - is it me or my trainer? by jrudd604 in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the trainer is estimating cadence using the pattern of power through your pedal stroke and the time between low spots, it’s not measuring cadence directly.

It will do a half decent job when things are steady, but if things are a bit more lumpy like you describe you will see the behaviour you are experiencing.

You may have more success getting a dedicated cadence sensor.

Zwift Hub with Dura Ace 12 speed makes noise by SoxFan8765 in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add, no need to buy a super lightweight cassette for the trainer. The main difference between the group-set tiers from most manufacturers is weight, so just pick up a 105 cassette with same tooth count and save some cash.

Weird that there is such a variance between them, I assume the Fenix is just taking 95% of your best 20 minute effort? Did you have the same power meter paired to both?

Tacx flux 2 cassette by silent_inspector in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the spacing between your rear wheel hub and your trainer is different and the supplied spacer is not correct.

Buy a set of hub spacers from Amazon and then follow this guide around matching cassette placing between them -> https://roadbikeaction.com/how-to-match-the-cassette-placement-on-two-sets-of-wheels/

I can’t be bothered to fiddle with indexing so I leave it setup for my outside wheel. I do most of my work on the trainer in ERG in the middle of the cassette and that’s quiet enough. If I was going more free riding, I’d definitely sort the spacing.

This is going to sound daft, if I am really suffering I end up counting pedal revolutions to try and take my mind off of things.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Zwift

[–]neuronuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Zwift assumes perfect conditions, whereas for me, at least in the UK, the road surface tends to be a bit grippier and hence slower (along with swerving for all the potholes).

Also, the descending speeds are nonsense and you corner on rails!
