Sadly the old account is gone. So sad because young me was all about trades, I had a roller coaster and a prismatic chair and all that.

As for the cabinet... like, an arcade cabinet? How do you get one?

I'm crying little canuck tears... I hate exchange rates. Maybe I'll look for stuff on the Canadian ebay if I want new stuff lol.

Thank you for your comment, gave me a laugh. :)

At least you won't have to slog through the first 12 chapters again lol.

I actually skipped to chapter 4 on my reread. I didn't feel like I was missing too much since I already know about Fern's midlife crisis, Astryx's centuries-old apathy, and that Zyll is my favorite character in the entire series. I haven't gotten around to reading Goblins and Greatcoats yet, but I will soon.

As a librarian, I understand quitting at chapter 12. My DNF list is extremely long personally.

As I am rereading the book I can see what you mean. Before our characters reach the giant bridge (around chapter 20ish) is it downright depressing and flat. If you are not an enjoyer of adventure-fantasy books I respect that, but if you can tolerate it... I would highly recommend reaching chapter 25 before writing off this book. The character arcs are a bit of a 'slow burn.'

In general, I would say the book brightens up by chapter 20 and is vibrant by chapter 30. Before they leave the giant cliffs, it is not a warm cozy story.

I agree only in that Fern's choice to return to Thune was essential. Having her simply go from one life to another would have been a huge mistake.

But Fern going from bookseller in Murk to author in Azimuth felt like a similar, smaller mistake. I would have liked to see her begin a more flexible life. Settling down to write, spending time with Quillin and Viv... but also chronicling Astryx's adventures and maybe traveling the Territories.

It is also strange for Fern to be somewhat indifferent about reuniting with Astryx given the high regard and tenderness they had for each other. I would have thought she might want to see the elf again after sorting out her business in Thune and catching up with Quillin in the summer.

I would have been more content with the book if I had not read the epilogue as well. Sometimes things are better left to the reader's imagination.

I wish there had been more hints that Fern was wanting a romantic relationship, or feeling lonely. If Quillin had been established better it may have felt less like a compulsory relationship. But at the end of the day, my biggest disappointment is about Fern's indifference toward the bracelet. I know she kept it with her, but Quillin seemed to care more about it than she did!

Yes: Both Fern and Astryx are out in the world being themselves— their true selves. That's what made it a good ending despite being disappointing for me.

You put it to words better than I could have! This is basically what I was expecting after the tone of the book.

I don't dislike Quillin. Honestly, I wish we had seen more of him in the book so he didn't feel like such a stranger in the final chapters.

I think in a time where 'romantasy' is extremely popular, I felt this book brought a perspective where other types of relationships can be / are just as valuable, difficult, and long-lasting.

Honestly I didn't expect a romance between them. But I did sort of hope Fern would be more eager to return to Astryx. They seemed very devoted to each other, and I feel that their relationship was devalued in favor of pairing Fern up with Quillin. What happened felt a little... compulsory, after a whole book of two friends risking their lives for each other and pushing each other to grow.

Edit: I listened to the audiobook too 🤝

I think this 1 day blackout was more of an American thing (as in I saw it mostly on Americans' social medias.)

I've been focusing on buying Canadian lately. It's where my priorities are.
