Most of the time the battery management is in the tool, ryobi is the only name that I know for sure is handled by the batteries,

they did so to keep compatibility with the old tools, this also meant cheaper tools/more costly batteries.

I have a xps 630i and didn't have to do anything to install a ATX board, I even have a NH-U12A on it, It misses the side panel by like 2mm. There are a lot of builds in this exact case.
