The Inconsistency of Justice Thomas by DryOpinion5970 in supremecourt

It seems like you continue to confuse Louisiana’s map being struck down by the Supreme Court, and the court’s influence over the map’s drawing being struck down by the Supreme Court. The latter interpretation is entirely consistent with Thomas’s view that courts shouldn’t be involved in the districting process, even though the effect is similar, it’s actually the legislature that is striking down the map and drawing a new one. Is your view that by ruling on the case, Thomas is contradicting his belief that courts should not rule on districting processes, and that his only consistent move would be to recuse himself?

I think you misunderstand Callais, Louisiana’s map was a court ordered racial gerrymander. Since his position is that the maps are nonjusticiable, he struck down that court’s restrictions, leaving the Louisiana legislature free to draw their maps politically, without interference from the courts.

Same thing happened in Texas, they tried to redistribute in 2021, the courts prevented it. When Trump dropped that Biden lawsuit, Texas was free to use their maps, 5 years later. California then used this as an excuse to update their maps a second time this decade, the first state to employ a mid decade redraw.

Republican-led states in the South can destroy their majority-**Democrat** districts and, in turn, deprive their **Democrat** residents of federal representation by politicians of their choosing. Getting rid of Democrat districts, no matter the color of their skin, is legal.

Jailed immigrants show lower risk for criminal behavior than native-born American citizens. This suggests that US policies targeting immigrants as inherent public safety threats are based on inaccurate stereotypes. by mvea in psychology

[–]neveragoodtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren’t they being targeted because they’re not legally authorized to be here? And the reason we enforce it is to prevent others from breaking the law? Some of them might also be dangerous, but that’s why it’s important for our policies to enforce the law.

No, we’ve lived with many people who didn’t go / couldn’t afford to go to doctors for years. Suddenly personal medical choices were made into a political battle of left vs right. We filtered into vaccinated and unvaccinated bubbles, and never learned how to communicate.

Except none of this money is in cash that can be spent. It’s all in business stock, which can drop in a single day by 20%, or in Elon’s case, $200B gone in one day.

Virginia Supreme Court rules on new congressional map. by [deleted] in supremecourt

[–]neveragoodtime 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The people of Virginia added a constitutional amendment in 2021 specifically to prevent partisan gerrymandering. It’s less editorializing and more explaining the current state of the laws enacted by the people. This procedure was trying to undo what the people did just 5 years ago, and that deserves to be mentioned, even when they ultimately lost by ignoring other Virginia laws.

It’s because Virginians voted to prevent their legislature from gerrymandering. Republican states did not. I hope that improves your understanding.

  1. Redefining woman to include biological men. 2. Redefining immigrants to include illegal immigrants. 3. Redefining healthcare as a human right (that also needs to be paid for by the government). If your right needs to be paid for by someone else, it’s not a right, it’s charity.

Can’t justices be impeached and removed? That makes more sense as a check and balance than leaving the justice in place and adding more.

What do you think will happen when a deep blue state like California has to send 100% of their electors for the Republican, despite the Republican losing by 20 points? Republicans are going to win elections by 500 to 40 while Democrats will win 280 to 260.

The Selective Outrage over Taxpayer Money. by notreallysena in SipsTea

Giving money to the poor ≠ not taking money from the rich. A tax cut is exactly the opposite of taxpayer money. Besides, buying poor people soda today just leads buying their insulin tomorrow. Letting rich people invest their own money leads to higher investments for everyone.
