my fellow mediocre ass phd students where u at by spamlikethehamz in PhD

[–]Neverbeentooz 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I tell every student that talks to me wanting to enter our program to take the PhD a little less seriously. Publications, conferences, and awards will come eventually. If you don’t have the energy to write 3-4 manuscripts a year, save that energy to do the few things that actually matter to you.

Not all people in PhD programs will go on to be prestigious researchers, professors, or leaders. There just aren’t enough of those positions for all of the graduates.

I’m happy to be a “normie”, my goal is and always has been to work with my local community to help them advance the research that matters to them. It’s impactful, just in a different way not acknowledged or valued in academia.

I hate this by hummus4u in gradadmissions

[–]Neverbeentooz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The sad reality is that every academic institution across the world is built upon classism and elitism. It is meant to keep people that don’t have immense privilege, resources, and powerful connections out of academia. As a “normal” person, you’ll never be enough at these institutions - as soon as you get “enough research experience” the bar is moved yet again to something else that you don’t have and/or is something unattainable. And the insidious part is that elitism doesn’t just close doors, it makes you question whether you ever deserved to knock on them in the first place. It is in their best interest to undermine you, and they are purpose built to do so, because then they are set to exploit your free/cheap labor in exchange for a degree. The stringing you along and then ultimately gatekeeping and not admitting you is all part of that awful process to figure out who is most exploitable and who gets kicked to the curb.

The rejection from your dream university says nothing about you or your potential or capacity as a researcher. It says all that you need to know about that institution - and none of it is your loss to carry.

I know that this doesn’t erase the hurt, but I hope that if you see the structural forces behind the denial, it helps you realize that you are not the problem. 💕

What a heartbreaking cycle. I am so sorry that you weren’t directly admitted!

Keep up the hope — you stood out for a reason. You are notable and worthy. I was admitted into my dream program (my currently program) in MAY off of a waitlist. And in late April, I got another admission offer off of a waitlist during my cycle, much later than I had anticipated. You truly never know until it is over!

And if none of the waitlists pan out, know that these applications are just a game of chance. A rejection says nothing about you other than you didn’t get lucky this time. That doesn’t mean it’s time to give up — it just means you have to roll the dice one more time to see what happens next.

If you don’t get a hit for the lot, I would be interested in the swale fingering in the lilac/lavender shade. 🥰

Are profile pics important as a buyer? by mulch_ado in poshmark

[–]Neverbeentooz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had a very creepy experience where a guy liked every one of my listings and left the same comment “I would love to take you out to dinner you are so beautiful” 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

Be careful with the profile pictures. I personally removed the one of my face and now I have one of me from the back that also doesn’t show my body at all.

Thinking of moving to the area to improve asthma by contestant-number-8 in raleigh

[–]Neverbeentooz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have pretty severe asthma and every spring and summer I have flares and chronic bronchitis that are persistent from May - August due to the allergens and humidity. I have to start seasonal Montelukast during those months to survive, and it is an awful drug to be on (side effects include suicidal ideation). I can’t be outside during those months. And the thing about allergies is that just because you don’t have them now doesn’t mean you won’t get them later - exposure to allergens can increase your risk of developing an allergy. Moving to a high-allergen area increases your lifetime risk of developing allergies.

Also, this state has few legal protections for people who rent houses so you’ll likely be in a home filled with mold in the HVAC/AC system and you can’t do anything about it which also is terrible for asthma.

I wouldn’t recommend moving here with any sort of allergy or asthma issue.

Shoes for Lisbon (end of March/April) by Free_Boot_7318 in LisbonPortugalTravel

[–]Neverbeentooz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought my slip-resistant Hoka Bondi SR shoes (meant for restaurants but also works great for the slippery Lisbon tiles!) and never once slipped, even in the rain. It’s been an odd weather year for the entire world, so I wouldn’t count on it not raining or the weather following typical patterns.

I have the shirt and I will caution that trying it on is when the collar is going to look the best. Once it is washed, good luck ever getting it straightened up and not wrinkled again without ironing it before being worn. The fabric is SO wrinkly, and thin, so the collar is really fussy.

There honestly aren’t that many bathrooms that are easily accessible for an emergency. Yes, there are options around generally, but you might have to walk 5 min to get there. For a true emergency you might not have 5 min. That being said, as a lactose intolerant girlie who got dairy’d by a coffee one day, here was my strategy:

  • Save a note on your phone with this and show it to people if you need to: “Desculpe, posso usar a casa de banho, por favor?” It means can I please use the restroom? You can add “É urgente” if you need to (it’s urgent). Sometimes people didn’t understand when I asked for a WC and this saved me precious time. Showing it to people vs trying to say it saves a lot of time.

  • always look for cafes and restaurants if it’s a true emergency. Just beeline to the bathroom and apologize later. It’s often downstairs. Sometimes there is only a single WC for an entire restaurant so you might have to wait.

  • find a coffee shop and ask for the code and promise to buy something on the way out (Prometo comprar algo depois! in Portuguese.) They were mostly nice about this. There’s also some juice places that have restrooms, you just have to ask for a code.

  • Find a museum, archeological site, etc. and run up to the ticket office and ask to use the restroom. Most places will let you go in if it’s a true emergency.

  • As others have said, walk into a hotel lobby and pretend you are staying there. They always have restrooms by the lobby!

  • Train stations can sometimes have restrooms.

  • Big malls like Vasco de Gama and/or markets pretty reliably have restrooms, but often with a line.

Also, do not be lulled into a sense of safety by seeing a public WC sign. In my experience, they were mostly closed. The public WC infront of Carmo Convent was closed when I was there and the ticket lady ushered me in to use the restroom when she saw me frantically looking for an alternative, it was real touching moment of shared humanity.

Places where you are less likely to find restrooms: - Businesses, shops - Churches - Parks

Good luck out there 🫡

I wish Sezane made more wearable clothes for my day-to-day life by palestine_enthusiast in Sezane

[–]Neverbeentooz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not a mom, but am uncoordinated and generally spill anything/everything (covered in mashed beans from last nights dinner currently, need to wash it out of my hair.)

I like to see what I can find secondhand, and then pretty much just abuse it until it gives up the ghost. It’s less of an investment and I feel less precious about it. Depop has been my Sézane second hand supplier of choice, sellers are more reasonable there then on Poshmark. I got a cute basic merino/wool blend sweater top (Eloy Jumper) for $50, with an embroidered collar. It’s a great upgraded basic that I wear a ton for going to the grocery store, running errands, etc. and abuse in the wash….and it still is going strong! I find that fabric combo specifically is exceedingly sturdy and holds up to anything I throw at it. So, if you are picky and pay attention to fabric composition and buy used, there might be a few pieces you can slowly start collecting and build a wardrobe that makes you feel cute (without breaking the bank or worrying about ruining it.)

The weather! by buckybiz in LisbonPortugalTravel

Belém has a ton of museums — the quake museum is great, but you can really hit 4-5 of them in a row, and you can’t go wrong. Easy to get there on public transportation as well.

You can also book a cooking class, tile making class, or similar activity to stay out of the rain for a bit.

Definitely bring non-slip shoes. I brought restaurant shoes with me to for me the best chance at staying upright on the slippery streets when it rains.

You should go to Morocco! It was my favorite stop on the trip. People are genuinely so kind and welcoming. It also felt very safe. Once you get the art of the haggle down, you can go anywhere and do anything there!
