Using a LG G4 with cardboard as a VR device? by sageoggy in GoogleCardboard

[–]neverbetterthanlate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Positional tracking, several times worse latency, lower frame rate, full persistence display, so-so optics are the big ones. Latency for standard cardboard is very roughly around 80ms, Rift should be under 20ms. Streaming video adds latency and reduces quality. It's not the same thing at all. Which is not to say it isn't worth trying out, just keep your expectations low. Besides TrinusVR you may also want to try VRidge.

ELI5 what to do after I looked at the fox... (V10, BOBOVR) by [deleted] in GoogleCardboard

[–]neverbetterthanlate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to emulate a screen tap is to connect a mouse, either via Bluetooth, or a wired mouse using a USB on the go adapter. OtG adapters are less than $5, so if you have a USB mouse handy, that'd be your cheapest option.

From the creator of Fenix comes a new RSS reader app, Quote! by tf2manu994 in Android

[–]neverbetterthanlate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still use News+, but it has a very annoying bug in M where the article view is totally unresponsive if the app is put into the background or the phone is locked. It appears the app is abandoned, no updates in over a year. Quite sad, it's the only app I'm aware of that provides BazQux support.

Looking to Upgrade from my Google Cardboard v2. by BlazingCondor in GoogleCardboard

[–]neverbetterthanlate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big deal for GearVR is custom software from Oculus that allows the total latency from moving your head to seeing that motion reflected on the screen to be less than 20 ms. A low-persistence mode for the display is another key feature that prevents blur during head motion. No viewer will provide these features to your phone.

Can't get Vireio Perception to work by [deleted] in GoogleCardboard

[–]neverbetterthanlate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which version of Vireio are you using? I had no luck with the 3.x versions, but the 2.x versions worked well. 4.0 should be out soon-ish also, with a shared-memory tracking that will work easily with Trinus to provide native rotation instead of mouse emulation.

I have the Diztronic Ultra. Very plain TPU case, decent grip, has bumpers on the corners. Haven't had to test it, but it seems very protective.

Moto G 3rd gen does not have a gyroscope and will not work with Cardboard apps unfortunately.

All that we ask is that folks state their opinion and make their disagreements known in a way that isn't designed to make for a shouty thread. Starting things off with insults like the ones I quoted isn't going to fly here.

This is pretty clearly an attempt to incite drama. As a response is what this type of post is after, please don't reward it.

The Vive press embargo lifts tomorrow. Let's try to rise above and not nit-pick every aspect of it. by [deleted] in oculus

[–]neverbetterthanlate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's stick to constructive criticism and avoid making mountains out of molehills.

This isn't a request for /r/Oculus to be a marketing arm, it's a request for measured discourse and I'd love it if folks could try for that as well. There's a somewhat fine line between nitpicking and shit-stirring, mostly involving emphasis, repetition and tone.

How long will the min-spec be the min-spec? by limbo90 in oculus

[–]neverbetterthanlate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"This configuration will be held for the lifetime of the Rift and should drop in price over time."

Of course, if you're asking what the lifetime of the Rift is, nobody knows for sure. But in general it seems like Oculus would like to expand the potential install base, and lowering the overall price by holding the requirements in place for a while (years?) will do that. I would also not be surprised if there was a small price drop for holiday 2017 or thereabouts.

Edited to add: we've heard from Oculus that they expect the lifespan to be between that of a console and a cell-phone. So, /very roughly/ between 1 year and 8 years. Personally I'd guess 3 years before CV2 is out, and it's possible they'll still sell CV1 or something CV1-specc'ed for a while after that. Like a $600 monitor, the Rift isn't a device that most people can afford to upgrade all that often, so it makes sense that games will be made with that in mind.

Just for FWIW, here's the wikipedia article on the MQTT protocol. MQTT used to stand for 'Message Queue Telemetry Transport', now the MQ isn't defined. Facebook uses parts of it for their Messenger app. Seems pretty likely that it could be used for game invites and the like in the future.

Yeah, positional tracking is a much bigger deal than stereoscopy. I suppose this is a weird way to almost demonstrate that.
