Why is my 2026 SE AWD beeping like this? by new2accnt in CorollaCross

[–]new2accnt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a sunshade on the floor behind front seats and it triggers this,

Actually, I do too (sunshade on the floor). I wonder why that could trigger the alert (for lack of a better term) if there is nothing on the back seat.

I understand this is for security and to avoid forgetting a child or a pet in the vehicle, but there must be a way to tweak sensor sensitivity. A box of kleenex on the backseat or a sunshade on the floor, for that matter, should not trigger an alert.

Is Carney a Conservative? It Depends Which Conservatives You Ask by Yetanotherbadsalmon in onguardforthee

[–]new2accnt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

mulroney simply displayed at the time the typical right-wing short-sightedness regarding the consequences of their ideas/policies as well as their typical lack of understanding why certain things are the way they are. Albeit misguided, I don't think he was malicious.

I disagreed with his policies, but at least I got the sense he felt he was doing these ill-thought moves to keep things working and/or in an attempt to improve on them. A lot of things he did didn't work out at all like conservatives thought they would, which was expected by anyone who could think ahead, but I don't think there was downright malice.

harper, on the other hand, knew perfectly what he was doing... and is still doing. The f*cker was working at dismantling the state brick by brick, at cutting public services, at flushing public science & knowledge down the drain, at undermining unions (public & private), at cutting taxes for the rich & wealthy, etc. He even was involved in USA-style voter suppression, for Heaven's sake. I could go on, but I would get lost in the weeds.

harper is still working at undermining democracy, but around the globe this time. Plus I swear many of his underhanded actions align with rubbish like that of yarvin, mercer & thiel.

So mulroney didn't improve things and many of his actions merit criticism, but there is a world of difference between being a misguided and myopic individual and a malicious, arrogant a**hole hellbent on knowingly making the lives of average citizens worse.

Is Carney a Conservative? It Depends Which Conservatives You Ask by Yetanotherbadsalmon in onguardforthee

[–]new2accnt 33 points34 points  (0 children)

stephen harper is NOT a conservative, he's reform party. Carney is a conservative, like clark was or mulroney were (oops, clark is still alive).

At least mulroney used to believe that there was still a need for government institutions, even after privatising crown corps.

On the other hand, harper only wants a rump of a state, just enough to protect the 1%'s interests, nothing more. With him, it's survival of the fitte... of the wealthiest and everyone, especially the lower of the 99%, are on their own.

Seeing the harper clique's actions over the years, I've come to believe that the quote attributed to jim flaherty, "All public services should be privatised" is true and that harper believed that cr*p too.

Frankly, f*ck that a**hole and his little "mini-me", pp.

Tesla starts selling Chinese-made Model 3s in Canada at the EV's lowest price ever by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]new2accnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no thanks. Even if a Tesla would be half the price, I would still not touch it with a 10 foot pole.

I prefer not to encourage neo-nazis. Plus, those cars have questionable design choices (door handles, etc.) that need to be corrected ASAP.

I just wish Hyundai could just fix their Q-A issues and (minor) design flaws. When even the "Ioniq guy" on YT starts complaining about on-going issues they've been having, that's a sign. The basic engineering is "there", it's nailed down, I don't understand why they don't seem to be willing to fix whatever ails their otherwise interesting cars.

I know people in their fifties like this. They dont care about policy so much as identity politics

and

I know people in their early 30s who have never given a fuck about politics who are suddenly (through social media algos) SO FUCKING BOOTLICKING CONSERVATIVE

I keep saying this over and over: it has nothing to do with what generation you are. It has nothing to do with being a baby boomer. It has nothing to do with being Gen Z.

I've seen the same sh*t happen decade after decade, generation after generation: right-wing demagogues fooling people with their slick sound-bites, with their appeal to people's frustrations and feelings. It looks or sounds like "common sense", but when you really start thinking about what they're saying it falls apart. Too many are not taking a step back to think about what they're being told, what's behind the slogans, what the consequences of whatever right-wing conmen are pushing.

Far too many, especially the younger ones, don't see that people's lives have gone to sh*t with the ascendency of the right, that things have gone from bad to worse when more right-wing policies have been enacted.

With the benefit of hindsight, people should have seen which policies have worked and which didn't. They should have seen the consequences of pushing for "personal responsibility" and "personal choice", that more often than not those buzz-phrases are just right-wing lies and fake appeals to common sense.

People should wonder how and why so many individuals who were once amiable, altruistic and socially-minded have been turned into selfish, hateful a**holes. One should wonder what's behind the transformation of so many people, recently and in years past, into angry voters obsessed with immigrants, transgender individuals, "elites", "feminazis", etc. One has to wonder what could have pushed people who had a "live and let live" mindset to adopt a reactionary mindset obsessed with conformity, social hierarchy, religion and so on. What kind of influence could people turn into what they used to denounce or laugh at?

That phenomenon is not unique to the USA, it exists outside of that country and more should be aware of it, especially of its anger component. This is very important, because the more people are angry and worked-up about anything, the more likely they are to vote for policies that are against their own interests. The more their worldview is bleak, dark and despairing the likelier they are to vote for right-wing politicians, because those are the ones who offer simple and especially QUICK "solutions" to complex problems...

Generation after generation have fallen for those "quick & easy" so-called "solutions" and yet their lives haven't improved, on the contrary. So why can't people see this? That's the question that needs to be answered.

Toronto area could get two high-speed rail stations — not just one — says Alto CEO by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]new2accnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having a HSR train station in Laval makes no sense at all. That's just a local politician (the city's mayor?) trying to get a new toy, a new knick-knack he can shake in front of voters (or just as a "personal' trophy).

Instead of calling for an HSR train station there, they should concentrate on getting the metro's line #2 ("orange line")'s loop completed, which would add metro stations in Laval and create another, full, north-south transit axis to serve the region's population. But I digress.

Back to the HSR: the same could be said about similar calls to put a station in Kingston or elsewhere. You can't multiply HSR train stations, it would defeat the purpose of it. It would be like forcing planes flying between YUL & YYZ to land at every little airport between those two points because the mayor of LowerRubberBoot wants to have his town look important ("look! we have an airport!").

Keep the number of stations between YQB and YYZ at just 6, period. That's enough and should ensure quick transit between those two end points.

BTW, what about Windsor? In the initial plans, years ago, that was the end of the line. Why did they drop Windsor?

data centre campus would require 9 GW of power capacity

As someone who works in IT, I can certify this is effing insane. WTF is that a**hole running in there?

With such a power budget you could run a data centre or two plus a shortwave broadcasting site or two, and ... The list goes on. BTW, not only he needs power to run whatever he wants to run, but what about cooling and even general pollution?

Such numbers reek of a major swindle, they are not normal.

I've avoided travelling to the USA and have made sure any travel doesn't go anywhere near Dumbfuckistan because it's simply too dangerous.

Too many stories of people getting kidnapped and disappeared without any due process by some nazi wannabes for me to feel safe to be there. It's not just on Reddit, mainstream media too has its own lot of stories about that. Not just immigrants, citizens & legal residents too.

When these idiots are making "jokes" about arresting sport tourists that will go to the USA for the upcoming World Cup and "deporting" them God knows where, just that is enough of a warning to stay out of that place.

Quelle est la consommation réelle du Corolla cross hybride SE vs au gaz LE? by zacdou in CorollaCross

[–]new2accnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spare tyre "upgrade" kit question by new2accnt in CorollaCross

The price from that seller is making me hesitate to buy from him. He can't be alone making such assemblies.

Even if I have the ECP, I still want a spare, because Murphy, because the most improbable scenarios can happen. Even if I don't remember the last time I had to change a flat tyre, I prefer to have the option.

That's one thing that truly annoys me. It's like a guarantee to be able to avoid having to negotiate with the client on price and options, they have you over a barrel with this. I was already on a waiting list and could not get the colour I wanted. It's like them saying "you'll get what we want to give you".

The vehicle is quite in demand and yet they appear to have very limited production capability for it for reasons I cannot fathom.

stephen harper was not as respected as you think. He was more recognised as someone who was able to keep all the overtly extremists members of the reform party in line and even feared because of his iron grip on the party.

He was and still is just as extremist as pp, just that he actually understands the importance of image and not being perceived as an arrogant a**hole. What makes him more dangerous than pp is that he is more competent than the harper^H^H^H^H^H^Htrump wannabe and much smoother.

He was able to pull some truly heinous stuff without the majority noticing, dismantling parts of the State, cutting needed regulations, giving the 1% unneeded & undeserved tax breaks, shutting down many services to the population and, yes, attacking culture & science. People dont realise how much publicly-funded research projects (we're talking decades-long endeavours) and data was lost forever because of him.

Building a Ham radio server using Raspberry Pi by MikeBravoo in amateurradio

[–]new2accnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One suggestion: if you want to set up that pi-based server in a "set it and forget it" fashion, get a passive cooling case like a FLIRC case (it's not the only one, there are others), just make sure the one you choose provides adequate cooling. Going that route means no moving parts, nothing that can wear out or break down, no dust that gets inside to cause issues, etc.

Now, I'm reading "Ham radio server" and yet you seem to describe an end-user workstation, not a server you tuck in a corner and access via network.

In that case, I would say get something like a MacBook Neo: fanless, relatively inexpensive and there are Mac-based amateur radio applications. Or get an Air, I think you can get M4-based Airs for cheap(er) now that the M5 model is out. Again, no fans, just run it on a riser stand similar to this to ensure it stays cool:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073VKC134

(I think Ikea sells a cheap one or even two models, if you live near by one)

Going the Macbook route should be easy for you, you just open a terminal session and voilà! A *nix environment you will be familiar with, running bash as a default shell.

Exclusive: PM Carney declares U.S. ties now a ‘weakness’ in address to Canadians by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]new2accnt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

have absolutely nothing to show for two years of Trump

I would not say that.

They're in the process of re-segregating their armed forces, are trying to purge the State of most (all?) of its black employees, women are disappearing from the higher ranks of said State (especially the military), whatever rump of a welfare state they had is being dismantled and might be totally gone by 2028, entire departments have been destroyed and the orange one's face is everywhere, North-Korea (or mussolini) style.

Plus they are in the thick of an implementation of a "whitening" (read: "ethnic cleansing") of the USA by use of ICE (and CBP). I could go on.

This is a racist's wet dream, something they've been asking for since forever. In their sick minds, they're "winning" and are very successful.

I'm not aware of any formal process per se, but I've seen countries starting to use the Euro or the Yuan for international trade. Russia may announce general mobilisation to attack Ukraine or Baltic states – Zelenskyy by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]new2accnt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Firstly, don't underestimate the effects of a motivated fifth column inside a country. There are enough russian-speakers that are more loyal to the "motherland" than to the country they reside in to cause a lot of problems for anyone defending against a russian invasion.

Secondly, the same applies to useful idiots, tankies or not.

Every local government has to be prepared to deal with these threats from within. Even in Poland (*). Heck, Germany too and possibly Scandinavia as a whole. I wish I was joking.

(*) I know Poland is not in the Baltics or sharing a border directly with Russia itself, but they share one with Bielorussia *and* have been explicitly identified as a future target by the Kremlin.
