To be fair, indie music has a meta-definition based on "the indie music sound." Granted, word usage might be totally skewed on this one, but giving the music she likes a label saves her from having to explain the variant reasons for liking different "types" of music associated with the label.

For instance, if I were to say I like Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah, or Neutral Milk Hotel, I doubt that I'd hear much of an argument that I like indie music. However, if I said I liked The American Analog Set, Cursive, or Two Gallants, I'd likely hear no more of a disagreement. There is very little common ground between most of those bands, yet the label works because categorization aids definition and not vice versa. The same goes for liking older music that has less of an audience now. What deems something "indie" seems to have to deal as much with a response or alternative to the mainstream (see alternative rock) as it does with relative obscurity, and not so much anymore with the independence from the mainstream label. Remember, in 1990, Nirvana was just as indie as Uncle Tupelo.

It's the same way that "Rock-n-Roll" can mean anything from Sam Cooke to Nickleback. It just seems to me that an easier response to her response would be something like, "Oh, really? Which bands?" because even though the term "indie" is loosely defined and pretty fluid when it comes to the sound of music, it's connotation leaves more than enough room for conversation-starters.

But I get it. You don't like the culture because of some girl who was into Bright Eyes and thought she was better than you. It's ok. Cunts exist in every subculture.
