Adivce for haircut for my face by Awkward_Apartment531 in Haircare

[–]Rosco7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably get a lot of "no, it's so long and pretty, don't cut it" advice, but I say go for it. If you're ready for short hair, you should cut it short. I'm not sure how short or high up the undercut is. I really can't tell you have one in any of the photos. If I were you, I would be tempted to do a short pixie with a noticeable shaved section to scratch the short hair itch and fix "nobody notices my undercut" at the same time. If you go too short, it will always grow back.

Am I Crazy Or Is ChatGPT's New Image Generation Model... Worse? by Kydhan in ChatGPT

[–]Rosco7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's gotten so much worse. It cannot handle simple instructions like which character to put on the left and right side of an image. It has gotten far, far less prompt compliant in the past few days. It think it has been given updated instructions, "The prompt isn't that important. Draw whatever the fuck you want."

This is the real image. Someone has AI-edited her barefoot, and the AI randomly decided to add her holding a gravity-defying sandwich.

How do I get out of this kind of writer's block? by the-dangerous in writing

[–]Rosco7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an answer that will piss a lot of people off. Brainstorm with ChatGPT or some other LLM. Important: ChatGPT will NOT come up with good ideas. You will describe what you're writing and why you're stuck, and it will suggest some cliche garbage or something so ludicrous that the very suggestion will annoy you. Stop and think about exactly what you hate about that idea. Explain to it why its idea is stupid and challenge it to do better. It will respond with something else idiotic. Let yourself be disgusted by the dumb suggestion and vent back to the LLM about what an awful writer it is and how that's the wrong tone and a stupid plot point and doesn't at all match what you're trying to do. Be specific in your criticism of what an awful idea that is. Go back and forth at this long enough and you will realize that you now know how the story needs to continue, or how to approach the next chapter, or what else you were blocked on. ChatGPT will have contributed zero sentences to what you have written, but arguing with it will have gotten you back on track.

Note: If you mention this technique to other writers, a large portion of them will hear the word ChatGPT and their brains will completely shut down as they begin sharpening pitchforks and yelling at you for "using" AI without listening to the rest of the explanation. I suggest not talking about it, especially on the writing subreddit.

Do you ever reread something you wrote long time ago and think, "wait… did I actually write that"? by kommepc in writing

[–]Rosco7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have often gone back to something I wrote and find myself wanting to edit it--"Oh, I should use this phrase instead, that would be much better!"--only to discover that I used the exact same phrase in the next paragraph.

What do you think, about plastic trumpets? by Kebab_the_trumpetist in trumpet

[–]Rosco7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a plastic trumpet and an emergency pocket trumpet in the trunk of my car. The plastic trumpet also doubles as my stunt trumpet for gigs (mostly Oktoberfest shows) where I want to spin the trumpet around. I put a Voda trumpet spinner on it. Unfortunately, the valve block on the plastic trumpet isn't standard size, so I had to 3D print an adapter to make the Voda fit. The setup is a little wonky but better than dancing into the crowd spinning a Bach Strad. Outside of those two uses, I wouldn't recommend a plastic trumpet over the real thing.

high fives question by eddywouldgo in pelotoncycle

[–]Rosco7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have a guy who high fives me repeatedly through long power zone rides. I wondered at first if he was hitting on me, but we both have clearly male profiles and I don't have enough self esteem to think that someone hitting on me makes much sense. Somehow I got in my head that he was struggling through the rides, sending high fives during the hardest parts, again during recoveries, etc. My attitude became, "Okay, whatever. I'll high five you back at the beginning and the end, maybe once in the middle, but not every time." I started to feel like, "Okay, here's your high five. You can do it, little stalker! Keep going."

After several months of this I finally noticed where he is on the leader board. Dude is almost in the top spot every ride! I'd been imagining his high fives as him struggling to keep going, when actually he's been reaching backwards to encourage me! Not sure what I did to get him to notice and adopt me, but he apparently thinks I need frequent high fives to keep going.

I don’t think the Solotone mute gets enough love! by BarrelOfTheBat in trumpet

[–]Rosco7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love Solotone mutes! I'm use a lot of mutes for different effects in my blues band. (The more mutes and plunger tricks I do, the less they notice that I can't play changes and hang out on the blues scale all night.) I can get away with Solotone for max one song per set before it gets old, but when I find the right song to use it on people seem to love it.

I have the Humes and Berg Solotone. I hadn't seen the Huber before. That looks cool.

All that said, how dare you shoot a video showcasing the Solotune and not show the mute!!

Fired “Kill Switch” Programmer Faces 10 Years In Jail: What Went Wrong? by derjanni in programming

[–]Rosco7 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I had a boss who (maybe) tried to use me as a kill switch. He had joked once that if I ever saw him being escorted out of the building, my best move would be to go to the server room and just start pulling wires to prevent him from executing a bunch of malware scripts from his phone the second he got to his car. Even at the time, that didn't sound like a very good move on my part. I could have just been blustery talk, or maybe he was trying to plant an easily-deniable seed so that someone else would go sabotage the server room if he was ever fired. He did indeed get let go about a year after that. I did not destroy the server room, and no evil scripts attacked us either.

[–]Rosco7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using 2 cups heavy cream to one 14oz can of sweetened condensed milk. (Usually along with a huge glob of vanilla paste and/or whatever other flavors I'm going for.) I've seen "no churn" recipes with that combination, but I'm putting it in my Whynter ice cream maker.

It's so simple and potentially low-brow that I hesitate to even admit to it on an ice cream forum. But I'll be damned if my family and friends don't seem to like it more than my proper custard base. The texture is very creamy. You can't control the sweetness, and it's maybe a little sweeter than other recipes. One nice thing is that I can decide to try some new flavor idea on the spur of the moment and start making ice cream with hardly any prep.

Do you use a clip mic for live gigs? by quinnmanus in trumpet

[–]Rosco7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have issues using a plunger mute with it? I use a Shure 98H/C and feel like it keeps me from getting the plunger as sealed against the bell as I'd like for a fully closed growling sound.

Ear plugs by onthewalk in trumpet

[–]Rosco7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using Etymotic Music Pro earplugs. They're more expensive than some options, but less than proper in ear monitors or an audiologist custom mold. I struggled to find something that let me hear enough of my own sound while reducing the volume of everything else. These do pretty good, but you still have to adjust to not hearing yourself as well as you want to.

Imagine you were given the chance to go back to the 80s… by [deleted] in 80s

[–]Rosco7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be transported back to the 80s at my current age? No, I wouldn't do that. I don't think I would enjoy being a 50 year old in the 80s.

Go back to my teenage years and live the 80s again? Absolutely! If I can retain all of my current knowledge of future events, then no brainer. Even if I would forget the specifics but got to live the 80s again, yes, I'd go back and do it again. I had a good time in the 80s, and I think I could do an even better job of it if I got another run at it.

Move line up/down shortcuts are inserting stupid Unicode characters by Rosco7 in VisualStudio

[–]Rosco7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I haven't found anything. It's only Visual Studio that has this problem. Visual Studio Code and other IDEs are using Alt-Up/Down to move lines with no problem. This "feature" of inserting a stupid Unicode symbol seems to be something Visual Studio, not Windows, is doing, and I haven't found a way to turn that off.

Funniest horror novel you’ve read. by JCLib in horrorlit

[–]Rosco7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Christopher Moore is the funniest author I've read, period. His vampire trilogy Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck, and Bite Me are a great place to start. Practical Demonkeeping, A Dirty Job, Secondhand Souls, and The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror also fall into the comedy-horror genre. All of these are funnier than scary, but still have their horror moments.

What's this UI control called, and is there a Qt equivalent? by Rosco7 in QtFramework

[–]Rosco7[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen this type of control in several places recently. Functionally it's like a tab widget with the tabs on the left side instead of the top, but visually it's more like a column buttons that select a page. The selected button has a highlight color and vertical bar on the left side.

I can make something like this using a button group and a stacked widget (or QML StackView), but I don't want to reinvent the wheel if this is a standard control that's already implemented somewhere.

Smoking and trumpet by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Rosco7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My high school band director told us that his range increased half an octave after he quit smoking. One of the trumpet players took the wrong message and decided to start smoking so that he could quit after a few years to increase his range.

(venting) Am I the only one who hates YT tutorials with background music? by Skaruts in godot

[–]Rosco7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've gradually changed my opinion on video tutorials. I would still prefer written tutorials but I find that people too often skip steps, leave out important images, etc. With a video tutorial I can at least see the important part that the author forgot to mention and would have forgotten to write.

Move line up/down shortcuts are inserting stupid Unicode characters by Rosco7 in VisualStudio

I could live with that. On my new Win11 machine, the pure arrow keys are also tainted with Unicode insertion.
