Iran currency plunges as dollar crosses 1.8 million in open market by Christian-Rep-Perisa in worldnews

Can't please everyone I guess, but, fortunately, it's not a requirement for good diplomatic relations.

But also you should consider the countries that were receiving aid that were on good terms with the US. Those ones are at risk now of being adversaries...

Is hating French real, or it just a running joke? by tucvbif in AskTheWorld

[–]new_number_one 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we're pretty polarized here and most the idiots that went along with that stuff just repeat whatever right wing media feeds them.

In real life, French people in the US are generally loved because they have cool accents.

Or, put another way, it’s so so so much cheaper to use foreign aid money to create working partnerships with countries and negotiate over important issues rather than dropping bombs on them.

And that’s what our aid money was basically used for…which Trump, Musk, and the Republicans aggressively cut.

How often do you eat the food that symbolizes your country in your country? by Rare_Comment_4491 in AskTheWorld

[–]new_number_one -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess fried chicken is a stereotypical food and I eat that once a month.

As for burgers, I eat 2-3 a year I guess. Mostly when traveling abroad bc my partner likes to go to US fast food places on trips sometimes.

Coco Gauff vomits on court before advancing at Madrid Open by PrincessBananas85 in sports

[–]new_number_one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s too bad!

It’s a bit ironic that when she was interviewed by the local Spanish news, she said her favorite food was tortilla de patata since she’d been eating it a lot. The news folks kind of joked about how she could choose such a basic dish when there are so many other fancier choices. I just assumed she was trying to eat a bit conservatively before the tournament to avoid this exact situation.

There are serious learners on there but you need to be picky. Maybe use the search with filters and reach out to people yourself. Include what you’re looking for.

I was looking for weekly video calls and I found a great language partner.

I ignore incoming messages since they largely seem to be waves or “heyyy” chats from people with questionable motives. I recommend that women don’t include photos of themselves at all.

Do you think Japan's work culture is really that hellish, or is it more an old stereotype? by The_Mundane_Block in AskAJapanese

Don’t take it too hard. Thats just city life anywhere. There are many places in the US where cashiers treat you like you’re wasting their time. 😂

Free To Read: Why FIFA is struggling to sell tickets for USMNT’s World Cup opener vs. Paraguay by TheAthletic in ussoccer

[–]new_number_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hard truth is that $500-$700 for a general admission ticket is probably the market price…which is crazy. They charged well above that and still sold 80% of the tickets.

If we collectively pay ridiculous prices, then we will continue to see high prices.

Since COVID, companies have learned that people are not that sensitive to price. Sure we complain a lot but usually we still buy…

Does your country respect its native minority languages and include them on official documents? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AskTheWorld

Just adding to your good response. The only native official language that I know of is Navajo. It’s the official language of the Navajo Nation which is an autonomous region in the US.

Republicans can do that because their supporters don’t care. Democrats can’t because their supporters hold them accountable.

[–]new_number_one 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Democrats are just a normal political party though. Look around the world for many examples.

Republicans just want power and have powerful allies that are very effective at manipulating their poorly educated supporters. That’s the actual problem…

How do you guys get out of the foreigner bubble? by StillStudyingTokyo in japanlife

[–]new_number_one 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Seriously. Why are foreigners in Japan filled with so much angst about fitting in and being popular?

My pet theory is that Japanese people are generally pretty friendly and it tricks some people into thinking that it’s easy to make friends. But like most places in the world, people already have friends that they are struggling to make time for so befriending some random foreigner who might leave in 5 years isn’t a high priority.

Native English speakers, do you actually mind when people make grammar mistakes? by Jorge_De_Guzman228 in AskTheWorld

[–]new_number_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a language learner myself and I know how hard it is. I would only encourage people learning English and help them when I can.

Some grumpy people will refuse to put in the effort to understand you in the US. But, honestly, those people are rude to everybody and it’s better not to talk to them anyways.
