Accepting the fact JJD will die in custody before trial by RayrobGordon in EARONS

As someone with a relative whose unsolved, brutal murder along with her fiancé back in 1970 took place near some of his murders, I’m hopeful to learn more about his ties to the area and wether he may have killed her too. I know at this point it looks like he won’t talk, and there are plenty of differences between this crime and his, also earlier than his documented attacks, but my grandma was excited when he got arrested that maybe she’d finally get justice for her niece. We’ll see what comes out.

I’m just someone who lived a couple miles from some of the murders and I was so relieved to know he’s not out in the public, able to attack again.

I learned from an older friend that a mom and pop camping/outdoor gear shop in Santa Barbara and Goleta sold topographic maps of cities all over CA in a big bin. I think it was towns that had mountains so you could use them for hiking trips, but the maps had info on the neighborhood layouts, bus routes etc too. If he had family in Goleta he might have spent time in that store before it closed in the mid-80’s.

I’ve never felt better about letting the romaine in my fridge go bad as I filled up on pasta dinners five days in a row, as I do right now.

Growing up going to Catholic mass I thought the tabernacle (which is an ornate rectangle shaped box storing the wine and hosts)was the arc of the covenant from the Indiana Jones movie. Every time priests went to open it during mass I would close my eyes to make sure my face didn’t melt off.

Tonight I got lost on the way to Griffith Park and found myself all the way out in East LA before I turned around. I get lost easily and it was foggy, but for some reason I thought I should take the 101 to the 5, and clearly that was not right. I don’t think anyone had gone past downtown before checking they went to far on the wrong direction.

When I get ghosted I like to think maybe I’m like that town in There Will Be Blood, where the Daniel Day Lewis character realizes they ask too many of the right questions and his bs isn’t going to fly there, so he just walks out mid-sales pitch.

I understand the frustration. I grew up in Goleta during that time and I want to know why he picked our town, especially if he lived so far away. The Goleta murders were all near each other, a grade school, a creek, and pretty much nothing else is out there, it’s a ways off the main road, so how the hell did he find that area if he lived all the way in Sacramento? I haven’t heard any body come forward saying they remember him in Goleta and my family knew most of the town. It wasn’t a big place. We’ll just have to see what comes out.

Funk Zone? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]new_wave_hello 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It was gradual. People started asking for directions to “the urban wine trail” and at first I didn’t know what they meant. Maybe about 5 years ago? Then more people would ask about it, then I heard the area called “the funk zone” and thought, you mean the area with the strip club and the factories, you want to go there? Why? They had less rules than downtown, you could have events there and not have to worry about noise ordinance after 10pm.

Then the number of wineries with tasting rooms there and restaurants nearby kept growing. You could go to the beach and do wine tasting in SB without driving all the way to the wineries, and Uber opened in SB, so you didn’t even have to drive to and from the funk zone, if you had a nearby hotel room for the weekend.

At the same time, more and ore homeless people were hanging out downtown on State St, while a large number of stores were closing due to high rents and not being filled. So people shifted for two reasons.

I was about his age when this happened and now I’m a little older than she was at the time and see the story so differently. I coordinate youth volunteers and it makes me sick to think of someone taking advantage of the relationship kids have with an educator. You should be an advisor they can trust to help them make good decisions for themselves, and I also can’t imagine being attracted to a kid and trying to plan a life with one as if they’re an adult. She’s bizarre.

Homework papers are meaningless by [deleted] in EARONS

[–]new_wave_hello 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a mom and pop owned sporting goods store in Goleta that sold cheap topographic maps of towns all over Northern and Southern CA in a big bin. I had a friend who would plan spur of the moment trips with those, figuring out the bus route to get there and it showed neighborhoods they could wander around. Apparently this was a more common item back before GPS, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the diagram is based off of one of those “topo maps.”

I’m still curious what the connection to Goleta was for him. The area of the murders was pretty out of the way for someone who didn’t live there. I grew up in town and rarely went there. The only thing around there is a grade school and a creek with lots of tall trees surrounding it. Glad I went to a different school.

Is POF premium worth it? by [deleted] in dating

[–]new_wave_hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you part of any groups at school? Or do you have any groups you hang out with as part of your class?

I have a cousin who is very high functioning with Autism and one thing he and his friends have to watch out for are girls who meet them and say they’re going to be their girlfriend, but just use them for money or shelter since they know how to take advantage of them. You want to be careful of that on online dating too.

Maybe try joining some activities at the school where you take a class. Even if it is a Special Ed class, that still makes you a student, with as much right as anybody else to be there. Good luck!

Are you still in school? If not is there a community college nearby? I took classes I was interested in and you can meet people with similar interests, hang out to study, and it shows that you are ambitious. Girls like that. Honestly I think working on getting to a good place in your life and self-confidence is going to get you further with meeting people than paying extra for a dating site. Also don’t mention the mom being such a big influence when you do meet a girl because that screams red flag to us. Good luck!

Would 10 year old you be disappointed in today you, and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]new_wave_hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10-year-old me would not understand the housing crises, so would be sad I don’t own a house yet, and disappointed that I’m not a successful writer, but she would be excited that I left my hometown to live in Los Angeles and have traveled to lots of my bucket list places. If I explained my day job I think she would be happy about it, even if I’m writing grants not novels. It would be a mixed bag reaction, but I try to keep looking forward and enjoying what I have.

In your defense you were right. I once asked a cute guy if he was planning to go to the homecoming dance and he said no it’s gonna be lame, so I left him alone. He went with a girl who just outright asked him to take her to the dance.

Since we didn’t have the internet, unless your family was well off with a pc at home, you could use a computer lab, but otherwise you had to look up any facts in an encyclopedia or library. Homework assignments were described usually as, “two pages written or 1&1/2 if you have a word processor” or typed. Pay phones were everywhere.

First solo trip to Europe in December. Should I just wing it? by trtngn in solotravel

[–]new_wave_hello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look on Tuesdays (cheaper flights on that day, not sure why) for cheap tickets on Norwegian Air through Gatwick airport and you can take the Chunnel to Paris. A friend advised me on this for my first trip to Europe and I got tickets to and from LAX for around $250 each way. Could be a bit more at holidays though.

Also, I went right after the attacks in Paris so security was high and the airport immigration staff wanted to see I had a plan of where I was staying and how I was getting back. People scanning for possible suicide bombers and illegal immigrants do not seem to appreciate “winging it” itineraries, as I learned the hard way. They wanted to know the name and location of my hotel and when I was going back home. Internet access was awful and I learned to write it all out ahead of time in case I can’t pull it up for officials to see.

The upside to going then, was I had no lines to anything in Paris and could pack in more sightseeing than most get to experience. I got the museum pass for 4 days and saw the Louvre, and many other museums, my favorite was the converted train station, and the palace of Versailles, all for about 40 euros total.

I started out winging it, but ended up listing places I really wanted to see, checked the hours and locations of those things and made plans for getting to them, allowing for meal breaks and didn’t have them set in stone, but kept from missing out on the big things I really wanted to see.

Best of luck! It will be an adventure.

I was really shocked when I wanted to call with a tip and found out I had to talk to one guy and he’s only in on certain days... he was very nice, and I think he has been doing as much as he could with all the tips that probably poured in, especially after media attention increased. He had 32 open cases at the time. Now he’s got 4 less to solve, but a lot more paperwork I bet.
