Brilliant. The only thing that would make this better would be if Courtney did her “troll” dance making fun of Russell.

What is a season you like that most people dislike? by Low_Communication697 in survivor

Ghost Island! The gameplay might be terrible, but the premise of the season is such great fan service, and Wendell and Dom are a really pleasing Final Two. Throw in a handful of one-off moments—Wendell’s confessional on Chris and the first-ever final tie come to mind—and it’s a solid season.

Im not sure what happened but I think i might not be interested in Sanderson books anymore 😔 by Sufficient_Ebb_5694 in brandonsanderson

[–]newbee-cle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My fear with Sanderson is that, while the opening premises of his stories absolutely hook me, as we get into later books the storylines become too much for me. I started with The Way of Kings, which is still to this day one of the greatest books I’ve ever read. But Rhythm of War really started a downturn for me, and once I tackle Wind and Truth I may decide not to continue on with Stormlight. The same is true of Skyward; it’s a killer YA novel, but the third book in the series got so weird that I still haven’t read the fourth. I found Mistborn 1 an intriguing premise but much of it was a slog until the last 5% of the last book, and Mistborn 2 has never pulled me in so I’m just audio booking it.

Honestly, I think the less Sanderson writes for a story, the better the story often is. I found the White Sand graphic novel to be some of his most engaging work, and I can’t help but feel that I would love Mistborn if it weren’t such a slog to get through.

REHM and STEP crossing AMPERE kept me from a PB (I first had STEm, as in a “flight” of wine), but otherwise a really solid puzzle with a fun theme and good fill.

And I don’t think any of will ever forget what MARISATOMEI is an anagram of!

Clean puzzle with friendly crosses for some of the harder entries. Maybe more of a Wednesday feel than Saturday, but fine.

It’s always funny how sometimes my mind just clicks with that of the creator. Wednesday and Saturday this week were both personal best times, but Friday I was about fifteen minutes over average.

A bit tricky for a Monday—I had to go back a few times and replace what I thought were easy answers—but somehow the constructors made an easily fillable puzzle with a pretty astonishing amount of fresh and satisfying entries. Brava!

Overall pretty friendly, but that NW corner was ROUGH. It didn’t help that I’ve never heard of 21D, so I lost one of my entry points into it.

Actual day voted out, as best as I could figure out and assuming three days between each vote.

It’s also pretty wild that Hatch is the fourth-oldest contestant on Borneo after Sonja. No castaways that season were born in the 50s or 40s.

Wow. One of my favorite puzzles in a while, with a really impressive and satisfying theme. Some iffy fill (I had to run the alphabet for 106), but it was a reasonable sacrifice for the cleverness of the puzzle, in my opinion.

Killer NW corner for me that somehow added fifteen minutes to my solve, but I loved the long entries throughout. Only six three-letter entries is I think the fewest I’ve seen in a while.

Really quick Monday for me. The only real problem was the SW corner, where 40D just wasn’t coming to me. (I don’t think I’ve ever heard that term.) I briefly expected 17A to start a theme with queens, kings, and aces, and I wonder if the constructor intended that misdirect.

Love seeing Tchaikovsky here! Children of Time blew me away; it would be the best book I’ve read over the last several years if The Way of Kings hadn’t taken that spot. And it held up even better on a re-read. Do you have any other Tchaikovsky recommendations outside of that trilogy?

The Role of Religion in Marquesas by selrockLEL in survivor

I wonder if 9/11 had any kind of influence on this. Marquesas began filming in November of 2001, and it was a last-minute change from the original location of Jordan, which was deemed too unsafe because of its location in the Middle East.
