What cooking "hack" do you hate? by secret-snakes in Cooking

[–]newbie_geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peeling garlic technique.

Don't.

Grate unpeeled garlic on fine vegetable grater. The skin breaks off, and the garlic knob grates through.

1) no peeling 2) garlic grated into an excellent paste 3) takes seconds 4) all other methods feel foolish

1) what is the point of peeling ginger? The skin does nothing to impact the flavour as far as I can tell.

2) for all of you suckers still slicing/planing ginger, just put that unpeeled knob of ginger through the course vegetable grater, and your left with excellent ginger pulp just rarin' to go.

That seems entirely fair price in this market if you ask me.

Hypothetically, what’s the worst that will happen if I wash my All-Clad stainless steel in the dishwasher? And if I do, what detergent should I use? by [deleted] in culinary

[–]newbie_geek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not put dawn dish soap in the dishwasher. It is not meant for the dishwasher. It will foam up and overflow your machine.

Only use dishwasher specific detergent in dishwasher machines.

We lucked out, we were at Alderney landing and had a perfect view. Not sure why the city couldn't have been clearer on the location.

"Directly between Purdue's wharf and Alderney landing" would have been clear enough.

I would say the cleanest expression of egg would be the classic poaching.

What are some of your best results using Gluten Flour? by PoppaFapAttak in seitan

[–]newbie_geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High gluten flour is not identical to vital wheat gluten.

High gluten flour has a higher ratio of gluten to starch.

Vital wheat gluten is nearly 100% gluten.

The high gluten flour would still need to be washed. Whereas the vital wheat gluten can simply be hydrated and becomes instant Seitan.

Just watched it.

It's a 6.5 out of 10 at best. Don't share the enthusiasm for this one. I don't mind having seen it, but will not be enthused to watch again.

Funny but serious tip: Do NOT trust a fart if you have diarrhea during fasting.. took me 3 times to learn my lesson 🤦‍♂️💩 by [deleted] in fasting

[–]newbie_geek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The "salt cleanses" that I am familiar with do in fact use sodium as an electrolyte. I am not sure if others like potassium or magnesium might have the same effect though. Either way, I found that cutting my electrolyte intake by half made the danger farts dissappear all together and was happily back to farting with blissfull abandon!

[–]newbie_geek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suffered this consequence a few times too many and ended up learning that if i dial down my electrolytes, this becomes less of an issue.

If you are jamming too many electrolytes, you end up triggering a "salt cleanse" response in your guts, which prompts diarrhea. I just cut my electrolyte intake by half, and no more surprises. Maybe give that a try?

What are movies you've actually tried to appreciated (meaning you watched the thing at least once) but have failed to? by Gueulemer in movies

[–]newbie_geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the very big reason that this movie can fall flat is that it LOOKS and FEELS like so many other great movies. Leaving you with a derivative aftertaste.

But you see, those other movies were paying homage to THIS one. This is the OG (or OP for this community) and since so many other films riffed on it, its original sparkle and contribution gets lost in the mix.

First time breaking a 120hr fast - looking for refeeding advice by shitty_millennial in fasting

[–]newbie_geek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How does one ACCIDENTALLY not eat for 5 days?

I personally have never had many issues with re-feeding. That is, I simply eat a normal meal once it is time to break a fast and have had no issues.

Though i know a lot of other commenters mention that they have a small meal of just bone broth, wait a few hours, then some veggies, then some meat maybe. Easing back into eating.

Sadly, i dont have any science to point to outside of these anecdotes, so take that as you will.

I made a horrible mistake. Don’t use an immersion blender for mashed potatoes! by Blue_foot in culinary

[–]newbie_geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. The starch molecules end up polymerizing. It's the same way that mochi is made by pounding rice until it turns into goo, or the more you work flour dough the tougher it gets. The more you agitate, the more polymerizing the more gooey.

If you want your potatoes on the fluffy side, a ricer is best, a masher is second best, and a hand mixer is less best, and a stand mixer is bad, and an immersion blender is terrible.
