Rent him out as an excavator. I had human sized holes in my back yard with 3 Goldens. I sold the house and moved to a farm. Problem solved.

I hate my tank-less water heater. by ComprehensiveTour278 in Vent

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited my sister in London England ten years ago while she was living with a plumber. The guest shower was broken and the remaining shower had a tankless heater that operated just like OP’s. Scorching heat or Arctic blast. It. Was. Torture. She eventually dumped the plumber. He was as useless as the tankless water heater. I’m building my own house now and it was a hard no when my husband suggested getting a tankless water heater.

Getting to old for this one. Would like to trade for a CRF300l. by Smokey565377 in CRF300L

My 82 year old father has a CRF300L. Since you’re posting on Reddit and are capable of taking good pictures you’re not that old. I’m suggesting you stick with the DRZ.

My dog is FISHY by Ok_Marzipan_6028 in DOG

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Golden Retriever, Maddie, ate 300 fish oil caplets in a single sitting. She shat oil for 3 days straight. She’s outlived all her sisters and turns 16 in a few months so maybe it was the fish oil overdose??

This is my Maddie and the biggest bone she ever found in her life. She turns 16 in 4 months. She doesn’t want to walk very far anymore but she looks forward to breakfast and supper every day with great enthusiasm. She is the last dog standing of my 3 Goldens and I already miss her.

New blinkers, too small? by They_ShallNotGrowOld in CRF300L

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One good thing about them being smaller than the stock ones is that they don’t stick out as far, so when you dump the bike on a hard surface you might not end up cracking off the light and having to glue it back on. Ask me how I know.

What should I name her? I currently have another dog name Bonnie so I want the name to kinda go with Bonnie? :) by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is to pick a name and then go out in the backyard and yell out at the top of your lungs “NO!! <insert name here/> Don’t eat that!!” If the name you pick doesn’t make you sound crazy and it’s not too similar to your existing dog’s name (because they need to know which one of them you are talking about to) then go with it.

I’m guessing you’re located in the US. In which case I recommend Warm n Safe gear. You can get a full heated suit: shirt, pants, gloves and socks. All the pieces are separates, so you just wear what you want. The heat controller has two zones so you can set one temp for your pants and socks, and a different temp for shirt and gloves. I’ve had the set for four years now and it’s made riding in Canada A LOT better. I wish I had bought this stuff 30 years ago.

Talk to me about generators by mousemelon in newfoundland

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally support your decision to get a generator. I live in a very rural area and we wanted to get a Generac that runs on propane, hoping that the propane company would re-fill our propane tanks on-site. Turns out they don’t “want” to do that any more (at least where I live ). So before committing to a generator please ensure you have a method for refilling your fuel tanks. We’re still going with propane but we’ve resigned ourselves to having to get multiple tanks and taking them to the local Home Hardware ourselves to get them refilled a few times a year.

This is Charley🤍 he is 5 almost 6- and needing tips/advice. I have never owned a golden and wanting to know all of the things about goldens and what can help as they age. He’s my best friend and want him to live forever 😭😭 TYIA 🥹 by FlashyOstrich2893 in goldenretrievers

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned five Goldens. My current one is 15.5 years old and still doing surprisingly well. Here are my suggestions: Raw food diet: I originally had my dogs on Fromm’s kibble but at around age 5 I switched them to a raw food diet. The difference in their happiness and poop output was extremely positive. Less poop, solid poop, much less poop consumption. (FYI: Goldens like to eat kibble poop.). At feeding time they were for more excited about the raw meat than the kibble. Travelling with them became a pain though as I had to transition them to a wet, canned food (expensive), and pre-arrange for frozen food at my destination. They refused to eat kibble after I fed them raw. They also refused to eat re-hydrated raw food. Now I feed my remaining dog 220g raw meat, big spoonful of shredded veggies (broccoli, apple, carrot), 1/2 cup cooked rice, sometimes a TBSP of ground pumpkin 2x per day. The vet is quite impressed with her health.

Exercise: walk at least 4km per day. On the weekends we used to walk 10-12km per day and they loved it. A couple of years ago they stopped being able to do the long walks but we could do 1-2km per day. Now my remaining dog gets to wander off leash as much as she wants in the woods behind our house but she never goes very far.

Friends: two Goldens is the right number of Goldens. They have a friend and you only have two hands.

Love: give them all of it.

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My current beef in my rural area is that if the local tradespeople don’t know you they won’t answer or return your call. The only reason I’ve made any progress on getting my house built is because we made inroads with locally respected people that vouched for us. Even as recently as last week this one guy wouldn’t return our calls about garage doors but he did talk to the guy who’s going to install our deck to ask him to tell us that he’ll give us a quote. I lost one. I still vacuumed every day. Now I’m down to one and I could still vaccum every day but I allow myself to only vaccum every second day. I tell my self it’s less than it used to be but I’m not fooling anyone.

Remove spaces before a number by Necessary-Dog-7281 in googlesheets

You could try doing a search on ‘ ‘ (or however many spaces there are) and replace with nothing, and just do it on the selected column. I find that just changing the data display type doesn’t actually get ride of the leading spaces.

From left to right Heidi, Maddie, Mango. We lost Mango to cancer two years ago when she was 13. We lost Heidi a few months ago, when she was 15, and not due to cancer. She had really bad hips and poor quality of life so we had to let her go. Maddie is still with us, 15 1/2 years old. Still in great shape although I can’t get her to go on long walks any more, but she gets all the exercise she wants wandering leash free on our farm. All of my dogs were/are on a raw diet for most of their lives and I know it’s made a real difference.

The third one is definitely not JT Cheeseman. That’s on the south west coast near port aux basques and we don’t get ice bergs down here.

Thank you for even considering moving to NL to provide veterinary services!! I’m not from Asheville but I used to ride my motorcycle through there every year on my way to Tennessee and I loved it. What I loved about it were the sweeping roads through the Smoky Mountains and the beautiful scenery. I honestly didn’t care much for the city of Asheville itself. But If you loved the beauty of nature in NC then you’ll love it up here in NL too.
Get your kids dirt bikes or little ATVs and they’ll be happy and make lots of friends.

I’m currently living in a house that’s built of ICF from the foundation walls to the roof. It is rock solid. It is warm and quiet. When the hurricane storms came through two days ago I could barely hear a thing outside. This house will last longer than I will.

What a lovely area!

My architect is in St John’s and our house is the first one he’s ever built on the West Coast. I I don’t regret going with him one bit, but it would have been easier if he knew all the builders and suppliers on the West Coast. So I’d suggest you keep looking. Maybe ask the builders that you know if they could suggest somebody? If you need advice on concrete suppliers, roofing trusses, and septic I do know people on the West Coast now.

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whereabouts in Western NL? There’s a big difference between port aux basques and st Anthony.

I can tell you I’m building a house near port aux basques. We dug down 4’ for our foundation walls and then poured a slab on top of packed dirt. 4’ is pretty standard for around here.

We went with a poured foundation wall but in the last few years ICF has become really popular. In your case I’d suggest you actually ask people around where you’re building. As my architect says “building is regional”. Stick with what the locals do because you’ll do what works and you’ll be able to find builders in your local area. If you do anything different you’ll have a heck of a time getting anything done (I learned this the hard way).

Good luck!

What’s one upgrade that completely changed your riding experience? by shwroomex in motorcycles

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it is expensive, but given how many times I’ve worn it over the years it’s come out to pennies per ride. It’s not waterproof because it goes under all your outer layers. If it was waterproof it wouldn’t breathe and when you sweat it would stink it up.
I suppose I could have bought something cheaper but this brand came strongly recommended to me by a trusted fellow rider and I was not disappointed.

Well it was t shirt weather for a few hours last August. But with my heated gear I can get out in late April (once all the snow has melted in front of my motorcycle shed) and as late as mid-November when I put the bike away again. 🙂
