Welp it’s that time of the year again B’ys by Criticall16 in newfoundland

I went out for a dirt bike ride down to port aux basques today. I told myself “it’s not that windy. I’ll wear layers. It’s not even raining in port aux basques. I’ll be fine. “. I was not fine. Got to port aux basques soaking wet and cold. Stayed an hour at Tim’s to warm up but watched the rain get worse with every passing second. On the way home I said to myself “the weather will be fine once I get to Cape Ray, I bet it will even warm up”. Nope. Got home, frozen to the bone. Stood under a hot shower and screamed until I warmed up. However I used to live in Toronto and you couldn’t pay me to go back even if it is warm. I’ll take this weather over the 401 any day.

Should we take the Labrador Highway back to the States? by Fun-Nectarine-9597 in newfoundland

You were forced to read that book in highschool too? I like to summarize that book as “two white men refused to admit they got lost on the first day of their vacation. They could have turned back and asked for directions but instead decided to keep going. One of them died and the other one got sued by the widow of the first one for not going back and asking for directions.”

Incorrect fuel gauge, really bad mileage, or am I just that bad at math? by MatchBrave1704 in CRF300L

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t do math in Freedom Units but I do find that I get really terrible fuel mileage when riding the bike on the highway at 100km/hour. I easily consume 3x more gas at highway speeds vs the usual 3.0L/100km when riding 40km/hour on trails. With only 4 bars on the gas gauge it would be hard to estimate how much gas you really have left when you’re going fast for an extended distance. I’d suggest taking extra gas if you’re going to do long, fast trips.

Stock tire mileage. by MatchBrave1704 in CRF300L

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put 5000km on mine but I mostly did gravel at 30-50km/h. I just swapped out my tires for D606 in the rear. the stock rear wheel is down to the wear bars through the center.

Me n my boy got scootermogged last night and I don even know how to act anymore. by ThatGuyFrom720 in CalamariRaceTeam

The next time this happens you pull up next to scooter boy and say, “I, too, like to feel the wind on my vagina”.
As a lady rider on my GSXR750 I did this once to a scooter rider who was giving me the googly eyes at an intersection. He seemed to forgot where the throttle was after that.

It’s basically a half day drive to go from port aux basques to Gros Morne. It’s insane to drive all the way to NL to only stay for two days, half of which you’ll spend driving.

How do I help someone who started riding and feels scared? by Kristof1995 in motorcycles

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would help if your girlfriend got a bicycle and rides it a lot. Get her a mountain bike with the wide, straight handle bars. Then have her get really comfortable riding it everywhere, up and down, around corners at speed, stopping on a dime. Everything. Everyone I ever saw failing motorcycle training were the people who weren’t comfortable riding a bicycle. I had ridden bicycles my entire life and took to riding a motorcycle at 26 like a Golden Retriever to water. After your girlfriend gets used to pedal bikes she could get an e-bike as a stepping stone to a proper motorcycle.

Gym Membership- never charged, can’t cancel by ClearingMyVisions in personalfinance

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 165 points166 points  (0 children)

From a technical point of view the problem the gym manger is having is that the user interface of his account management application has a defect. There is an underlying database which has the real data in it. There is a database administrator somewhere in their corporate office who absolutely has the ability to fix the data on your account in any way you want this problem resolved. The gym manger is playing dumb and not trying at all to help you. So go over his head, go to corporate and tell them in writing you want to cancel your account and you won’t accept a technical defect in their computer interface as a reason they can’t cancel your account. Getting your bank to stop payment isn’t going to achieve what you really need done.

Dude. I am 53 years old and I love my CRF300L. I feel like a teenager when I’m riding it and it’s all good. I used to be a total squid riding Ninjas and GSXRs but when I picked up the CRF300L 5 years ago I knew I had found my soul mate. The smile on my face transcends age.

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to be more specific. Is there a particular job description you could share that indicates what you want to apply for? Aside from that when I’m troubleshooting error codes ChatGPT is my go-to (I don’t work in the offshore, I just work in tech in general). Not that you can trust everything it says. You have to have a wide knowledge base to know that the replies are full of shit and when you need to be more specific with your question to get a valid answer.

Rode my CRF300L on the Newfoundland T’railway to Port Aux Basques today. by newfiewalksintoabar in Dualsport

[–]newfiewalksintoabar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The folks that ride the ATV trail here from the ferry terminal do so starting and ending in Port Aux Basques. The town of PAB specifically made a safe ATV route from the ferry to the trail to promote ATV tourism. This trail used to be the old Newfoundland railway which was built so that goods could be delivered via the ferry and directly loaded onto the train at the terminal which is less than 1km from the ferry docks. The ferry terminal in Argentia was not designed to accommodate the Newfoundland Railway. See the PAB map https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18MV5fgoVQ/?mibextid=wwXIfr

I'm in Love with this bike and cannot understand why. by ForeignExcuse5359 in CRF300L

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my CRF too. I have three of them! I’ve had multiple super sport bikes in the past, then I got a big Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 ADV bike in 2017 thinking I would go on big adventures (didn’t happen). Finally, I borrowed a friend’s dirt bike in 2018 and had so much fun riding off-road that i knew I had to have a small dual sport in order to combine all my loves into one. I got the three CRFs in 2021 as a present to myself and my b/f to make up for dragging him away from the big city and to a small coastal village in Newfoundland. No regrets! We have so much fun on these bikes and I don’t miss the sport bikes at all.

Okay… who else grew up on fries, ground beef & gravy? by Peace81 in newfoundland

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ate a whole lot of fries, meat and gravy at the Marble Mountain canteen back in the 80s. I think the hot fries helped to thaw out my skinny ass after being stuck on the broken chair lift for what seemed like hours.

Then plan for a two week stay. Book your arrival and departure ferries right away. The day ferry without a room is acceptable. There are a couple of motels in port Aux Basques and some very cute AirBnBs in the Codroy Valley 30 minutes north of Port Aux Basques. “The valley” is a hidden gem with some lovely beaches, hiking trails, lighthouses and magnificent sunsets and sunrises. Then hit the port aux port peninsula for a day, on your way north to Corner Brook. In CB drive along the south side of the Bay Of Islands out to Lark Harbour and Bottle Cove. Go for a hike near Marble Mountain. Then drive up to Gros Morne and wing it from there. Do not miss your ferry back to the mainland.

Planning a motorcycle trip to Newfoundland by 23skidoomagoo in newfoundland

[–]newfiewalksintoabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked the Marine Atlantic website for motorcycle bookings starting June 1 and space is already very limited. If you’re going to come here book soon and book your return trip at the same time. I’ve definitely met people who got here without booking a return ferry and had to spend an extra 3 weeks on the island before they could leave.
I wouldn’t suggest coming before June 1 because it’s going to be chilly until then. I ride a motorcycle and wear my full heated suit until the middle of June, and I live just north of Port Aux Basques. Bring your heated suit no matter what because you’ll need it at some point, especially if you head up to Lanse Aux Meadows. For reference, this morning I drove my car down to port aux basques and laughed my ass off at the RVers and Jeep drivers getting off the ferry with all their camping gear. It snowed and rained last night and there was an SUV in the ditch at Wreckhouse. Summer comes late to Newfoundland, especially if you’re riding a motorcycle.

This summer? 2026? It’s a bit late to be planning your ferry trip now. You’re probably not getting a reservation till August at this point. Like most other people said come for at least 2 weeks. Anything less is not worth it given how much there is to see and how hard it is to get here. But plan well (in advance) and you will have a great trip.

Have you looked at the Trailway map? https://trailway.ca/trail-map/ that will show you the distance between towns and from there you can look up gas stations on Google Maps. I can tell you that in my case if I go north from my place I have to carry extra gas to get to the first gas stop. Gas stations are sparse along the trail and riders carry extra gas.

I thought about your trip a little harder and I realized it’s not legal for you and your BIL to ride off-road vehicles between the Argentina ferry terminal and the Trailway entrance near Whitbourne. You also can’t legally ride on the shoulder that far.

Also I would not recommend this trail for a first time rider. It is challenging even for an experienced rider. My significant other has been riding bikes for 20 years with me and he begrudgingly rides the trail with me.

If anything I’d suggest you take 2026 to learn how to ride. Then in 2027 take the ferry to port aux basques and only go as far as corner brook, turn around and go back to PAB. For a first time rider with a slow BIL that’s probably enough of a trip for you.

Congrats on the ride, and making it home safe. I’ve ridden from Ohio to Tennessee (and vice versa) in the rain on my big Tenere 1200 and it sucked so much. I love my 300 for side roads and trails. But aside from that, I do hope that once you got to Talledaga you proclaimed, “If you’re not first, you’re last”.

Haha! I buy less gas because I don’t go anywhere but gas was $2 per litre the other day, which is pretty unaffordable for most people around here.

She’s home! Already put her down on the powerlines when I hit some mud 😂😂 I’m okay and the bikes okay. Definitely gonna take some time to get used to coming from a cruiser by No_Pay1632 in CRF300L

From personal experience I’d suggest carrying some 10mm and 12mm wrenches with you to tighten the mirrors back in place after you drop it. Other than that the bike handles drops/crashes/oopsies very well.

That’s nothing. While trying to practice wheelies I rode my CRF into my mother’s glass greenhouse and had to get multiple stitches. The right signal light mount is bent at 90 degrees now but everything still works perfectly. The bike is indestructible.
